John W. Morrison
John W. Morrison was born in Youngstown, March 6, 1899. His father's great-grand- father came to the Western Reserve in 1797. A Revolutionary War veteran, he owned five hundred acres in what is known at this time as the Westlake Crossing area of Youngstown. His mother's father, Daniel Hyde, came to East Farmington in Trumbull County in the early 1800s.
Mr. Morrison was educated at Western Reserve Uni- versity, graduating in 1921. He was a veteran of World War I, and served as a member of Selective Service Board No. 1 of Portage County during World War II.
He married Miss Charlotte Woodbury, daughter of Dr. George Woodbury of Cleveland Heights in 1921. Their chil- dren are George W., a lawyer in Portage County; John, Jr., a physicist in Akron; and Robert Hyde, a geophysicist in California. They have four grand children.
Mr. Morrison publishes the Steering Wheel, a state wide distributed publication, in which he features a philosophy column, "For Men Who Travel." The publication is devoted to driver education and highway safety.
In 1932 the Morrisons moved to Aurora in Portage County. Afterward he served on the village council, the Aurora District school board, the Portage County school board and was state senator from the 24th-26th Ohio district. In 1955 he was elected from the 11th Congressional District to the newly created State Board of Education, representing Portage, Geauga, Lake, Ashtabula and Trumbull counties.
A Presbyterian by birth, he became a member of the Aurora Community Church after moving to Aurora and served many years on its board and as its moderator. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta college fraternity; Elks; Masons; Cleveland University Club; Cleveland Churchman's League; and served on the inter-racial committee of the Cleveland Church Federation during World War II. He also served on the Hiram College Advisory Committee.
Mrs. Morrison was county chairwoman of the Portage County Women's Republican Club; a member of the county Republican Executive Committee; and was an alternate dele- gate to the Republican National Convention in San Francisco in 1956. She is also a member of the Ohioana Library Association.
Mr. Morrison writes a business column for the Cleveland News and his philosophy simply stated, is, "The more a person expands his thinking and acting under the guidance of God, the greater his compensation in terms of happiness, mental peace and satisfaction.
BRIMFIELD
Clarence L. Boosinger
Clarence Leroy Boosinger was born in Brimfield, December 20, 1904. He was the son of Seymour and Susie (Hershberger) Boosinger. His great grandfather, John Boosinger, was

the first permanent settler in Brimfield township, coming from Maryland in 1816 and building a cabin near the present Sunny Brook Golf Course.
Clarence received his education in District No. 4 school and the high school then being held in the Town Hall and the new high school that followed, graduating in the class of 1922.
He then built a garage at Brimfield Station and operated a repair shop there until 1935. Following this he took an agency for farm machinery sales, handling Allis Chalmers and New Idea lines. Later he sold appliances and in 1954 he discontinued machinery and confined his business to coal, lime, building materials and hardware.
Mr. Boosinger married Marian Risen of Suffield Town- ship October 28, 1933. Two children were born-Ellen Louise, now Mrs. Paul Murphy; and Emma Jean. Two chil- dren were also born by a previous marriage-Joyce Lenore, now Mrs. John Schmidt; and James William.
Mr. Boosinger is past president and secretary-treasurer of the Portage-Summit County Implement Dealers Association and is now an honorary member. He is also past president of the Brimfield Recreation League; present trustee of Brimfield Township; member Brimfield Lion's Club and Kent Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph T. Ludick
Joseph Thomas Ludick was born March 6, 1901, at Robbins, Guernsey County, Ohio, the son of Andrew A. and Mary M. (Repaskey) Ludick.
He attended the local schools there until he was about ten years of age when the family came to Franklin township, Portage. He then attended the Breakneck district school and later Kent State high school.
Farming, trucking and construction work have been his vocations since that time, the construction work being for the P. L. Frank Co., of Ravenna.
Mr. Ludick was married on May 26, 1926, to Helen M. Overholt. To them have been born seven children. They are Glen Leroy, Marie Alice, Gertrude Ann, Carolyn Rebecca, Dale Joseph, Carl Thomas and Richard Curtiss.
In May, 1926, he also purchased the grocery and restaurant business at Brimfield, in which business he is still engaged.
Mr. Ludick has always taken a lively interest in public affairs. He served on the Brim- field school board for 12 years and has been chairman of the board of trustees since 1948. He belongs to the Methodist church at Brimfield and is a member of Rockton Lodge, F.&A.M., at Kent.
C. Watson Moss
C. Watson Moss, son of Mrs. Mary Moss and the late Albert C. Moss, was born Febru- ary 11, 1902, in Clinton, Kentucky, moving to Kent in 1915. He attended the public schools

of Kent, graduating from Central High School in 1920.
In 1924 he graduated from the Case School of Applied Science, where he was affiliated with the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
In 1925 Mr. Moss married Lucille Shafer, daughter of Mrs. Minnie Sampson Moss and the late Owen Burr Shafer. She is a graduate of Kent State University and a former teacher in. the Kent public schools. She is a prominent club and church woman, being active in the Kent Congregational Church, Alpha Phi sorority alumnae and the Kent Woman's Club.
Watson Moss is an engineer with the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., traveling extensively in the United States and on the continent. He holds membership in the Akron City Club. His hobby is gardening and overseeing his 98 acre farm overlooking Sandy Lake.
Mr. and Mrs. Moss have one son, Cruse, a graduate of Ohio University. He is vice president of the sales corporation of the Willys Motor Co.
Mr. and Mrs. Norbert M. Roth
Norbert M. Roth was born in Ottoville, Putnam County, Ohio, July 25, 1905, son of Alphonse and Matilda (Schurlein) Roth. He was educated in the schools of his home community and at St. Josephs College, Rensselaer, Indiana, graduating there in 1922. He then attended Akron University for two years.
He also worked for his father in Brimfield, then a dealer in horses and cattle and in 1938 he moved from Akron and took over his fathers interests entirely. His operations were extensive. Both draft and saddle horses were handled, as well as high grade cattle. In the past few years Mr. Roth has been specializing in saddle horses and Shetland ponies, importing many of the latter from Scotland. With his wife, he has gone to the Shetland Islands to inspect stock.
On June 14, 1928, Mr. Roth was married to Dorothy Elizabeth Pfromm, daughter of George A. Mr. and Mrs. Norbert M. Roth and Anna Mary (Stitz) Pfromm of Akron. Nine children have been born to them. They are Rosalia Dorothy, now Mrs. James Roger Baum; Marylin Jean, Beatrice Ann, Elizabeth Jane, now Sister Mary Norbert; Albert Norbert, Robert Thomas, Elaine Agnes, Mary Ellen and Dorothy Elizabeth.
Mr. Roth is a member of the American Horseman's Association, Shetland Pony Assoc- iation and is vice president of the Brimfield Zoning Board. He belongs to the K. of C. Mrs. Roth is a member of the C.D. of A., Patrons Club of St. Patricks, and Infant of Prague Guild. Mr. and Mrs. Roth are members of St. Patricks parish of Kent.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Truckenbrod
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Truckenbrod
Paul Truckenbrod was born in Liptingen, Baden, Germany, June 25, 1900. He was the son of Jacob and Louise (Schwad) Trucken- brod. He attended the local schools there, which included a two year business course and one year of agriculture. At the age of twenty he went to Switzerland, where he worked five years on an agricultural farm.
In 1925 Mr. Truckenbrod came to America, reaching Akron May 5 and Brimfield on May 8 where he went to work on the Sunny- brook farm. At the same time he attended a night school in Kent to learn the English language and something about the government.
In November, 1930, he was naturalized at Ravenna.
On January 15, 1938, Mr. Truckenbrod was married to Miss Aline Lucille Boosinger, a descendent of Conrad Boosinger who came to Ravenna in 1800 and later, with his son John, became Brimfield's first settler.
The Sunnybrook Golf Course was established in 1928 with the Truckenbrods and Miss Bessie Boosinger, and it has been in continuous operation since that time. Another member of the Boosinger family is Horton Boosinger, now of Pisamo Beach, California.
Mr. and Mrs. Truckenbrod now spend about two months during the winter at Zephyr- hills, Florida.
Dr. lonia C. Twitchell
Dr. Ionia C. Twitchell, daughter of Morris Seeley Chapman and Viola (Ross) Chapman was born in Brimfield township, Portage County. She was a direct descendent of Robert Chapman who came from Hull, England to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1635, and the Ross family of Scotland.
She attended the public schools in Brimfield, and a private school of high school subjects in the town hall. She graduated from the American School of Osteopathy at Kirks- ville, Missouri in 1909, founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, the founder of Osteopathy. She is an Honorary Life Member of the American Osteopathic Association, and a National Delta Omega Sorority Life Member. She taught school before her marriage to Bertrand G. Twitchell, and after his death until she studied to become a doctor.
She practiced in Morristown, Tennessee for twenty years. She retired in 1928 and came back to Brimfield, where she and her daughter cared for her mother who lived to be 88 years of age. When J. R. LaDu, Justice of the Peace died in 1936, she was appointed J. P. and at the next election she was elected to that office, which she held until the Municipal Court was established January 1, 1954, at Ravenna, Ohio. She is now a Notary Public. While she was a J.P. she per-

formed 67 marriages-with only one a "shot gun" marriage among them .
She is a member of the Kent Universalist Church; a past president of the Association of Universalist Women; a member of Samuel Doak chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution since 1914, its Registrar for 13 years; member of the Portage County Historical Society; a past president of the Brimfield Garden club; member of the Garden Forum of Greater Akron. The Ohio Garden club, and the Portage County Garden club; and first vice-president of the Tennessee Osteopathic Association when she lived in Tennessee. She has been correspondent for the Kent Courier Tribune and Ravenna Evening Record since 1929; and the Akron Beacon Journal since 1943. She is the mother of Miss Viola Louise Twitchell, who resides with her mother at Brimfield Center.
Jesse Wayne Woods
Jesse Wayne Woods was born in Brimfield, October 23, 1882, the son of James and Olivia (Richards) Woods. His name "Wayne" is a Woods' family name, Gen. (Mad Anthony) Wayne being a Woods' ancestor.
Mr. Woods graduated from Brimfield High School in 1901 after which he entered Hiram College and received the degree of Bachelor of Science in 1906, and in 1909 the degree of Bachelor of Law from the University of Michigan. He began the practice of law in Cleveland that year and in 1913 be- came Asst. County Prosecutor which position he held for four years following whcih he with two others formed the firm of Locher, Green and Woods. From 1918 to 1930 he lectured in Criminal Law at the John Marshall Law School, and during this time induced the young man, Frank Lausche (now Governor Lausche) to study law. In 1926, an honorary degree of LL.M. was conferred upon him by the school. Upon the death of Mr. Locher, the firm became Green, Woods, Lausche and Wilmot and Mr. Woods remained a member of that firm until his appointment as Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in 1949.
In his practice, he specialized in Municipal Law and served as Counsel for many of the Villages in Cuyahoga County. He and Mr. Green were co-authors of the law making pos- sible the Metropolitan Park system of our State and served as counsel for the Board.
From 1909 to 1913, he was a member of the Ohio National Guard. He organized and served as President of the North American Bank from 1936 to 1949. He held membership in the Cleveland, State and American Bar associations, Delta Theta Phi, The Citizens League, Cleveland Kiwanis, City Club, McGuffey Society, Knights of Pythias and The Masonic Order.
His religious affiliation was with The Lakewood Christian Church, of which he was a life elder and for 25 years teacher of an adult bible class.
On Nov. 14, 1912, he was married to Margaret M. Moore, daughter of Loren and Ella (Moody) Moore of Brimfield and Kent. To them were born three children, Miriam Olivia who married David Clarke of Hiram; Betty who married Emil Schell of Cleveland; and Wayne J. Judge Woods' death occurred on Sept. 25, 1950.
Mr. and Mrs. Augustine F. Dussel
Augustine F. Dussel was born Aug. 3, 1896, in Randolph Township. He was the young- est child of a family of eight born to the late Peter and Mary (Lohe) Dussel. He received his education in Randolph schools and when 13 was employed by George Kline, who taught him the blacksmith trade. After one year he went to work for his brother, George, in his

blacksmith shop during winter months while helping on his father's farm in other seasons, do- ing general farm work. He han- dled these separate jobs for two years. He then took a year round job with his brother George, con- tinuing three years.
In 1915 he was employed as machinist at the Erie R.R. Kent round house, being machinist foreman and working there until 1921. In the fall of 1921 he pur- chased half interest from Frank C. Bowen in the Quick Service Weld- ing Co. in Kent, the first welding and repair shop in the county.
On Jan. 31, 1922, Mr. Dussel Mr. and Mrs. Augustine F. Dussel married Bertha Laura Fisher, daughter of the late Peter and Katharine (Knapp) Fisher of Kent. To them was born one son, Augustine Fisher Dussel, Jr.
Mr. Dussel was half owner of the Quick Service Welding Co. for 28 years. In Feb., 1950, he sold his interest to Hugh and Frank Bowen, Jr.
In March, 1950, he bought a farm of 170 acres in Brimfield, which he loved and cher- ished. He and his son operated the farm together until his death, Dec. 11, 1956, specializing in beef cattle. The farm is now operated by Augustine Dussel, Jr.
CHARLESTOWN
Edward L. and Iva H. Hartman
Edward L. Hartman was born in New Martinsville, West Virginia, June 14, 1881. He was the son of Emil and Caroline (Baldinger) Hartman. Mr. Hartman lived in Charlestown after 1906 until his death with the exception of ten years spent as an engineer in the

Oklahoma oil fields. For twenty years preceding his death in 1954 he was a mechanic at the May- hew Elevator in Ravenna. He was a member and trustee of the Charlestown Methodist Church and served as chairman of the Board of Charlestown trustees for many years.
Iva Hatfield Hartman was born and reared in Charlestown. She was the daughter of Ellis W. and Amelia J. (Young) Hatfield. After schooling in the Charles- town schools she graduated from Ravenna High School and attend- ed the Akron Actual Business School. Preceding her marriage to Mr. Hartman in 1913, she was a

teacher and secretary. Mr. Hartman then lived at Nowata, Okla.
Mrs. Hartman is a member of the Charlestown Methodist church and presently serves as church treasurer. She has been connected with the Charlestown school as member of the board of education or clerk-treasurer for twenty-five years, serving in the latter capacity fifteen years.
One son, Lieut. Col. Edward W. Hartman is in the United States Army presently stationed at Pittsburgh, Pa. There are two grand children, Tom L. and Mary Gillette Hartman.
Mr. and Mrs. Jay R. Ferry
Mr. and Mrs. Jay R. Ferry
Jay Reynolds Ferry was born in Brimfield Township, January 22, 1890. He was the son of John and Emma (Reynolds) Ferry. He at- tended school in Brimfield but later graduated in the Class of 1908 at Central High School in Kent. During school and in vaca- tions he helped his father in the Ferry Brick Yard, Franklin St. Extension.
After school he went into the dairy and cream business, con- tinuing with this for 15 years. In 1920 he entered into a partner- ship with E. C. Tagenhorst, selling out in 1923.
In 1926 Mr. Ferry was elected sheriff of Portage county and was re-elected in 1928. Following this he went to work for the Lyman Chevrolet Co. and con- tinued there until his retirement in 1956.
During his business career he was active in the Kent Volunteer Fire Department and in 1926 he organized the Portage County Volunteer Department Association which resulted in better equipment for each township. In 1935 he purchased land in Charlestown Township and constructed Lake Jay, of 25 acres, making it the center of a fishing and picnic resort.
On September 28, 1914, Mr. Ferry married Lillian Blackman, a registered nurse who was born and reared in Sharon, Penna. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Blackman.
Mrs. Ferry is an active member of the Women's Club of Portage County.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph W. Strausser
Ralph W. Strausser was born in Charlestown May 8, 1921. He was the son of William and Elizabeth (Thomas) Strausser. He attended the Charlestown public schools and graduat- ed from the high school there in 1939.
After leaving school he learned the carpenter trade under Dan Younkman and in 1942 he joined the U. S. Navy. He served in the Atlantic area on the Aircraft Carrier Bunker Hill and U.S.S. Card, operating on anti-submarine control. He received his discharge in October, 1945.
On April 18, 1943, Mr. Strausser married Elta I. Burnham, daughter of Burr L. and Minnie C. (Stadden) Burnham of Freedom. To them five children were born-Lois J., Patricia C., Barbara S., Robert W., and Beverly A.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph W. Strausser
In 1945 he started to work with his father on the galdiolus farm and upon his father's death in 1947 he took over management of the business, together with his mother until her death in 1957. He continues to operate the business.
Mr. Strausser belongs to the B.P.O.E., Unity Lodge No. 12, F. & A.M. and the North American Commercial Gladiolus Growers. He is now vice president of the latter group.
Mrs. Strausser is a member of the Southeast District Board of Education and belongs to the Charlestown Methodist church.
Mr. and Mrs. William R. Strausser
William R. Strausser was born at McDonaldsville, Stark County, Ohio, October 2, 1879. He was the son of Josiah and Anna (Kuhn) Strausser. When he was seven the family came to Portage County, locating in the east part of Charlestown Township, on what is now Arsenal ground.
He attended the Charlestown schools and worked on the farm with his father until June 4, 1902, when he married Elizabeth Thomas, daughter of Timothy and Rachael (Eames) Thomas of Palmyra. To them six children were born. They were Earl J., Helen I., now Mrs. Earl Moore; Elden F .; Wilda L., now Mrs. Clara Henn; Wendell R., and Ralph W.
In 1910, through purchase from Mrs. Iva Austin, who pioneered in the business, he started grow- ing and selling gladiolas. At first he specialized in growing and selling bulbs, continuing until the late 1920s when he specialized in cut flowers. In 1940 he sold the original farm to the Arsenal and bought the present location and continued as the Grandview Glad Farms. For the past several years the farm has had 30 acres devoted to "glads", marketing them main- ly in Youngstown and Pittsburgh. Mr. and Mrs. William R. Strausser Mr. Strauss was a member of the Moose and Mrs. Strausser belongs to the Wayland Federated Church and L'Etoile of Wayland and Newton Falls Welsh Church.
Mr. Strausser died Nov. 16, 1947, and Mrs. Strausser passed away May 16, 1957.

DEERFIELD
Mr. and Mrs. George C. Walters
George C. Walters was born at Glenshaw, Penna., near Pitts- burgh, in 1894. The family came to Deerfield in 1902. There he at- tended the Deerfield schools and as a young man entered the em- ploy of the Hutson Coal Co. and also did farming.
In World War I he served in the U. S. Fourth Division, spend- ing one year on the Rhine at Coblentz, Germany, with the Third Army.
On March 10, 1920, Mr. Wal- ters was married to Miss Zama D. Williams of Angola, Ind. They have one son, R. J. Walters, now postmaster at Deerfield; and a daughter, Zahma C. Wiler, R.N.,

of Akron, O. There is one grandson, William George Wiler.
During the second World War Mr. Walters was head of the A.A.A. Farm Organization and chairman of the War Board and Farm Rationing Committees. He is a member of the County Health Board and operates the Walter Insurance Agency at Deerfield, representing nation-wide insurance companies. He also raises beef cattle on his farm.
Mrs. Walters was born in Steuben County, Indiana, and attended Tri-State College of Music at Angola, Ind. For several years she was a singing evangelist and has been choir director of the Deerfield Methodist church since 1922. She is active in town and county civic affairs.
EDINBURG
Edward S. McConnell
Edward Smiley McConnell was born on a farm near Steubenville, Ohio, on July 23, 1880. He was the son of Edward and Nancy (McCausland) McConnell. His father was a native of Ireland and came to America in 1848.
Young Edward attended local schools and Steubenville College, as well as a school of auctioneering in Chicago.
He followed farming his entire life, first on his father's farm, then on a farm near East Liverpool. After that he went to the Myron C. Wick farm of 600 acres near Youngstown. He was an extensive raiser of cattle, horses, hogs and sheep. In 1941, he came to Portage County and purchased the large Fruitlands establishment in Edinburg and became one of the

largest producers of fruit in the county. This farm has 150 acres of apples and peaches and in addition, he raised about 125 sheep.
On June 11, 1914, he married Miss Louise Caroline Woltjen of Steubenville. To them were born five children. These are Mason, Ruth, William Carl, Mary Louise Dimrick and Philip Henry. Mason and Philip operate the Fruitlands farm today. William is a chemical engineer with the Girdler Corporation of Louisville, Ky.
Mr. McConnell was a member of the Grange for many years. He was a Mason and belonged to historical societies in which he was interested. Previous to coming to Edinburg, he had been a member of the United Presbyterian church. At Edinburg he was active in the United Church. He took a deep interest in public affairs.
Mr. McConnell died August 11, 1955.
Mason McConnell
Mason McConnell was born March 11, 1915, on a farm near Steubenville, Ohio, the eldest son of Edward S. and Louise (Woltjen) McConnell.
The family soon moved to a farm near Youngstown, where Mason attended school, graduating from Liberty High School. He graduated from Ohio State University College of Agriculture in 1937 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture. While he was in college, Mason was active in student activities, being a mem- ber of Alpha Gamma Sigma, social fraternity and Gamma Sigma Delta, agricultural honorary fraternity. He returned to the farm where he worked with his father in raising fruit.
In 1941, they purchased the fruit farm in Edinburg township known as "Fruitlands" and formed the partnership of E. S. McConnell and Sons with his brother Phil.
In 1944 he was married to Miss Eleanor Seymour, daugh- ter of Mrs. Harold J. Moulton and the late Frederick Parker Seymour of Rootstown. They have two daughters, Martha Sue and Susan Ann.
Mr. McConnell is a member of the Edinburg United Church, the Ravenna Kiwanis Club, Masons, and Ravenna Grange, being a past master of the Ravenna and the Portage County Pomona Granges. He has been president of the South- east Board of Education since it was formed in 1950. He is also active in Soil Conservation and Farm Bureau work.
