On April 8, 1926, Mr. Jones married Gertrude E. Jones, daughter of John E. and Margaret (George) Jones of Ra- venna. Mrs. Jones died in April, 1950.


On October 5, 1955 he married Dorothy Marie White, a Registered Nurse from Akron City Hospital, and daughter of Frank and Marie White of Stow. They now reside on a farm at Rootstown on the Ravenna-Louisville Road.


He was a former President of the Portage County Board of Education, past President of the Ravenna Kiwanis Club, a 32 degree Mason, member of the Shrine, American Legion, Elks, and has been a member of the Portage County Board of Elections since 1936.


Both Mr. and Mrs. Jones are members of the First Christian Church of Ravenna.


Edwin W. Jones


Edwin W. Jones was born at Claysville, Penna., Jan. 3, 1911, son of William R. and Catherine C. Jones. He came to Ravenna in 1920 when his father, in company with three brothers, founded the Jones Bros. Structural Steel Company.


Mr. Jones attended school in Claysville and Ravenna, graduating from Ravenna High in 1927. He then enrolled at Ohio State University where he received his A.B. degree in 1931. He then attended Ohio State University Law School and the Cleveland Law School, receiving the L.L.B. degree from the latter school in 1935.


He was admitted to the Ohio Bar February 7, 1936, and since then has been engaged in the general practice of law in his home city of Ravenna and is a partner in the firm of Loomis & Jones, formerly Loomis, Caris & Jones. Being in- terested in civic affairs he was a member of the Ravenna city council in 1936-37-38. He has been active in Republican party work and served as chairman of the Portage County Republican Central Committee.


Mr. Jones was married in 1934 to the former Elizabeth Horne, who is also a member of the Bar, and with whom he was associated in the general practice of law with V. W. Filiatrault under the firm name of Filiatrault, Horne & Jones from 1936 to 1940.


There are no children.


Mr. and Mrs. Ernest N. Jones


Ernest N. Jones was born Oct. 3, 1890, at Ravenna, Ohio. He was the son of William and Fanny C. (Willyard) Jones.


He received his schooling in Ravenna. From 14 years of age he worked his way through school, working at mailing for the Ford Seed Co. for board and the privilege of going to school. He graduated from the Ravenna High School in the class of 1911.


Mr. Jones joined the army in September, 1917, and served in France, Germany, Belgium and Luxemburg. He was also in the Army of Occupation stationed in Trier, Germay. He

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest N. Jones


was discharged in August, 1919.


Mr. Jones was with the Ford Seed Co. many years. After the death of J. H. Ford in 1933, he took over management of the business beginning Jan. 1, 1934, and remaining until Jan. 1, 1952.


Mr. Jones was married to Miss Winnifred Williams of Palmyra, Dec. 24, 1917. She was born in Palmyra, being the daughter of Thomas and Ann (Savage) Wil- liams, natives of Wales. To Mr. and Mrs. Jones, four children were born. They are Winnifred Jeanne, now Mrs. Theo Gedeon; Edgar M., Patricia Ann, now Mrs. C. D. Spencer who has had nurse train- ing; and Richard J.


Mr. Jones is a member of the Ravenna, Pomona, State and National Granges; I.O.O.F. No. 65, charter member Ravenna Kiwanis Clob, trustee Portage County Historical Society. He is past master of the Ravenna Grange. He has been a Ravenna township trustee for 12 years and is a member of the Foresters and County Clerks Assn., the American Legion, and the Auxiliary State Road Patrol.


Mrs. Jones is a talented musician and belongs to the American Legion Auxiliary and Eastern Stars. She belongs to the Coterie, and is active in church work and women's circles, doing volunteer work in the Ravenna Hospital Canteen.


Both Mr. and Mrs. Jones belong to the Christian church.


James A. Jones


James A. Jones was born in North Lawrence, Stark County, Ohio, March 14, 1891, son of Benjamin and Harriett Jones.


He attended the district school and was graduated from Massillon High School. He taught school for three terms in his home town and Garfield, Ohio. He attended Washing- ton and Jefferson College after which he entered the Engi- neering Department of the Penn Bridge Co. at Beaver Falls, Pa.


In 1919, in company with three brothers he came to Ra- venna and established The Jones Bros. Structural Steel Co .- Structural Steel Fabricators and Engineers. He has been President of the company since its beginning.


He has, over the years, taken an interest in the affairs of the community as well as his business. He was the first presi- dent of the Ravenna Community Chest and served in the same capacity at a later date. He has been twice president of the Ravenna Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of Unity Lodge No. 12, F. & A. M. and Tyrian Chapter. He is a member of the Methodist Church, and the Kiwanis Club.


In politics he is a Republican and has served his party as Chairman of the County Republican Executive Commit- tee, and has also served as a member of the State Central and

Executive Committee.


In 1930 he was elected a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from Portage Co. serving three terms. During one of these terms he was selected as the floor leader of his party. Subsequently he served one term in the Ohio Senate from this senatorial district.


He is Vice-President and Director of The First Savings Bank & Trust Co. of Ravenna. He is the owner' of a large farm in Freedom Twp. which serves as his principal hobby and summer residence.


He is married to the former Gertrude R. Fencil of Beaver Falls, Pa. They are the parents of two children: J. Philip Jones, an attorney with the firm of Loomis & Jones, Ravenna, and Ruth Elaine, wife of Atty. Robert E. Henderson of Ashland, O.


J. Philip Jones


James Philip Jones was born November 23, 1926, the son of James A. and Gertrude F. Jones. He was the older of two children. Philip, as he has always been known, attended the Ravenna City schools, and graduated in 1944. He entered Hiram College and was graduated with an A.B. degree in 1947. He then was admitted to the Western Reserve Uni- versity School of Law and received his LL.B. degree in 1950, and after passing the bar examinations, was admitted to practice in Ohio in August, 1950.


He immediately entered the private practice of law with the firm of Loomis and Jones in Ravenna. Mr. Edwin W. Jones, a member of this firm, is a first cousin of Philip Jones. He is a member of the Portage County, Ohio State and Am- erican Bar Associations.


Mr. Jones was married in July 1950 to Miss Norma Mac- Donald Collins of South Euclid, Ohio. At the present time they have three children: Philip, age five years; Kathleen, age three years, and Emily, age 20 months.


Mr. Jones is a member of the Ravenna Methodist Church, Ravenna Kiwanis Club, and Portage County Historical Society of which he was elected president in 1956 for a two year term.


Lavern L. Jones


Lavern Lloyd Jones was born October 20, 1907, at Clays- ville, Penna., son of Benjamin F. and Francis Lucretia (Baker) Jones. The family moved to Beaver Falls, Penna. in 1910, later to Alliance, Ohio in 1914, coming to Ravenna in 1919.


His grade school education was secured in Pennsylvania, Alliance and Ravenna schools, after which he attended Tri- State College, Angloa, Indiana, where he graduated as civil engineer in 1926. After that he worked as an engineer for the Morgan Engineering Co., at Alliance and later for the Burger Iron Co. in Akron. He helped found the Industrial Metal Products Co. of Ravenna in 1927 and became senior partner in 1932.


Mr. Jones married Gladys Robinson of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, on November 3, 1927. They have two children-Har- lene Lou, born in 1929; and Douglas Lloyd, born 1935.

Merle K. Jones


Merle Kenneth Jones was born September 30, 1912, at Beaver Falls, Penna., son of Benjamin F. and Frances Lucretia (Baker) Jones. He is of Welsh, German and English ancestry. The family moved to Alliance, Ohio in 1915, then to Ravenna in 1919. Here he attended grade school with two years at Ravenna High School, completing his high school education at Miami Mili- tary Academy. He then attended Tri-State College, Angola, Indiana, graduating with a B. S. degree in Aeronautical En- gineering. He entered into partnership with his brother, Lavern, in the Industrial Metal Products Co. at Ravenna, in 1934.


Mr. Jones married Miss Margaret Eloise Shumway, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Shumway of Ravenna, June 5, 1937. They have two children-David Merle, born April 8, 1940, and Holly Ann, born October 18, 1943.


He is a member of the Ravenna Rotary Club, Free and Accepted Masons, Royal Arch Masons, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, thirty-second degree, Shrine Club, First Congregational Church of Ravenna, Ravenna Chamber of Commerce, Twin Lakes Country Club and the Elks Club. Mrs. Jones is a member of the First Congregational Church, Tappan Garden Club, Ravenna Women's League, the Ravenna Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, and associate member of the Women's Association of Robinson Memorial Hospital.


Willard P. Kading


Willard Payne Kading was born in Mantua, February 23, 1920. He was the son of Harry E. and Gladys F. (Payne) Kading.


When he was a small child his parents came to Ravenna where he attended school, graduating from Ravenna High School in the Class of 1938. He then attended Kent State University for one year and worked at the Cleveland Worsted Mills for a year.


In 1940 he was employed by the City Loan & Savings Co. in Kent and Ravenna and in June, 1942, joined the army. He was assigned as special agent, Counter Intelligence Corps, Fifth Service Command, which comprised the territory of Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. He was discharged from service in November, 1945.


After the war Mr. Kading was appointed assistant man- ager of the City Loan office in Ravenna. In May, 1946, he was employed as claims adjuster for the State Mutual In-

surance Co., remaining in that capacity for seven years. On February 1, 1953, he purchased the insurance business of Norman B. Hill of Ravenna, which he is still operating.


On April 3, 1943, Mr. Kading was married to Jean E. Harlan of Ravenna, daughter of J. F. and Mary (McKisson) Harlan. To them four children were born. They are Candace Sue, Kerry Michael, Mary Jane and Elizabeth Ann.


Mr. Kading is a member of the Masonic Lodge, B.P.O.E., Moose, Kiwanis and was a charter member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, of which he is a past president.


Both Mr. and Mrs. Kading are members of the First Congregational Church, Mrs. Kading being very active in church circles.


Berthold Klein


Berthold Klein was born in Ravenna, Ohio, March 6, 1906. He was the son of M. J. and Ernestine (Exl) Klein. His parents came to the United States from their native country of Hungary. He attended school in his home town and grad- uated from Ravenna High School in 1924.


After this he entered business and has long been as- sociated with his brother, Jerome, in the well-known Klein Furniture store on Cleveland Ave., Ravenna.


Mr. Klein is a talented violinist. In this capacity he was soloist at Mount Union College, has appeared on various radio programs and was a member of the Akron Symphony and Kent State University orchestras.


He was married to Elizabeth Goodrich who passed away in March, 1956. They had three children. These are Maurice Goodrich, a law student at Northwestern University; Donna Jean, an insurance underwriter at Columbus, Ohio; and Berthold, Jr., now associated with his father in Klein's Furniture Store.


Mr. Klein attends the Ravenna First Methodist church and is a member of the Ra- venna Rotary Club.


Jerome Klein


Jerome Klein was born in Cleveland, Ohio, February 28, 1917. He was the son of M. J. and Ernestine (Exl) Klein. The father passed away in 1919 and the mother in 1943.


Jerome attended Ravenna local schools and graduated in 1934. He then assisted his mother in the operation of Klein's Furniture Store, Ravenna, until he entered military service in August, 1942. He served in the army Medical Department in United States, Okinawa and Korea. His discharge came in 1946. As his mother had died in 1943, he entered partnership with his brother, Berthold Klein in the operation of the store.


On August 30, 1955 Mr. Klein married Margaret Fodor, daughter of Alex and Katherine Fodor of Shalersville. One daughter was born April 17, 1957, Debra Kay.


He is a member of the Fairmount Temple of Cleveland, Ohio.

Albert L. Kreinburg


Albert L. Kreinburg was born in 1864, in the Johnnycake Hollow district of Randolph. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kreinburg. The father was the first man to grow celery in Portage County, marketing it in Akron.


As a young man he spent three years in Austin, Texas, where he learned the watch- maker's trade from a brother-in-law. He then opened a watch repair shop in Randolph to which he later added a jewelry store.


He was married to May E. Shewell, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Jared Shewell of Rootstown. They had three daugh- ters and two sons. They are Hazel, now Mrs. Hazel Ernstine Ladd; Florence Margaret Kreinburg; Violette May, now Mrs. David K. Phillips of Waco, Texas; Walter Riley Kreinburg and Ralph Albert Kreinburg.


In 1910 Mr. Kreinburg was elected treasurer of Portage County, coming to Ravenna in 1911. He served two terms in this office, after which he opened a jewelry store on West Main St., Ravenna. His two sons learned the watch maker's trade from their father and since their father's death Oct. 11, 1934 they have continued to operate the jewelry and watch repair business in Ravenna.


Mr. Kreinburg was a member of the Methodist Church, the Elks Lodge and the Moose Lodge in Ravenna. Mrs. Kreinburg died in March, 1948.


Earl R. Likens


Earl R. Likens was born in Ravenna, February 27, 1921. He was the son of Ellery A. and Mabel (Hollister) Likens, both parents being natives of Portage County.


Earl Likens received his education in the Ravenna schools, graduating from the high school in 1939. After some time working at the Cleveland Worsted Mills he became a labor foreman at the Ravenna Arsenal, working there until he entered the army as a private Nov. 7, 1942. He served 39 months in the Military Police force of the army, being discharged Feb. 26, 1946 as a staff sergeant.


After his discharge from the army Mr. Likens worked at the Twin Coach plant in Kent. On March 7, 1950 Mr. Likens, along with Wendell Perkins and Jerry Stone, bought the Triangle Pharmacy (formerly Shiley's Drug Store), at the corner of Main and Parkway in Ravenna. Mr. Perkins and Mr. Likens bought out Mr. Stowe in 1954, operating the store together since then. On April 15 they opened Triangle Pharm- acy No. 2 in Windham, operating both stores as a corporation.


On June 12, 1940, Earl Likens married the former Marcene Perkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Perkins, Mr. Perkins eventually becoming his partner in business.


Mr. Likens is a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Elks Lodge and has served on various community organizations.


At this writing Earl and Marcene Likens are the parents of four children. They are Marda M., Melodie S., Matthew E. and Mark E. Likens.

William H. Linton


William Hillis Linton, descendent of a long line of Quakers, the first of whom came over with William Penn, was born in Ravenna, December 23, 1853, a son of Isaiah and Mary R. Linton. Isaiah Linton, a native of Pennsylvania, was a civil engineer employed by the B&O and other railroads, and helped lay out the C&P road through Ravenna in 1847, becoming a resident of Ravenna in 1852.


William H. Linton fitted himself for the same profession under the skillful tutelage of his father and gained a high reputation for proficiency in his chosen field and an uncanny knowledge of mathematics. He worked with his father on the Pennsylvania system, at one time as road master of its P Y & A division, and later was employed by the C & N W out of Chicago.


In addition to his engineering ability, he possessed a good mind for financing public works, and for a number of years he served as City Engineer as well as a financial adviser to city and county officials. His ability in this line was especially appreciated by the Ohio State Highway Department in the early days of road building here. Mr. Linton also served as Service Director of Ravenna, and later as Secretary and directing head of road building operations of the Portage County Improvement Association. For a great many years he served as superintendent of the Ravenna Gas & Electric Light Company, which his father had helped organize and acted as President until his death.


In addition to his other activities, Mr. Linton was an accomplished musician, and was possessed of a fine tenor voice. Loving drama and music, he long had leading roles in the numerous operas and oratorios of his youthful days. Having all the qualifications for a musical career, his services were in constant demand.


Mr. Linton was married to Miss Clara A. Knapp, of Ravenna, on October 3, 1883, and to them was born one son, Robert I. Linton, who, married to Miss Clara N. Lodwick, of Cincinnati, now resides with their two daughters, Jane Delano Linton, and Anne Lodewyjk Linton, in the home established by Isaiah Linton. William H. Linton, died September 15, 1921.


H. R. Loomis


H. R. Loomis was born at Randolph, Ohio, September 24, 1880. He is the son of Harris J. Loomis and Susan France Loomis. He is a descendent of Joseph Loomis, who settled in Connecticut in 1639. His grandfather, Harlow Loomis, was one of the early settlers of Randolph Township.


Mr. Loomis is a graduate of Ohio Northern University. He was married on October 21, 1916, to Marguerite Bates Loomis, daughter of C. J. Bates and Orrilla Canfield Bates, of Chester, Connecticut.


Mr. Loomis is an attorney at law by profession, and was admitted to the bar in December of 1903, and has been actively engaged in the practice of law from the time of his admission to the present time. He served two years as Mayor of the City of Ravenna, and two years as Prosecuting At- torney of Portage County, Ohio.


He was one of the organizers of The County Savings and Loan Company, of Ravenna, Ohio, which savings as-

sociation was organized in 1916, and he has been its President ever since its organization. He is President of The First Savings Bank and Trust Company, of Ravenna, Ohio, and has been president of the bank for the past twenty-five years.


He is Director of the Enduro Rubber Company, Duracote Rubber Company, The P. L. Frank Construction Company, and The P. L. Frank Lumber Company. He is a member of the Ravenna Congregational Church, a 32nd Degree Mason, and is a Past Exalted Ruler of the Ravenna Elks lodge.


Mr. and Mrs. Loomis are the parents of two children.


Harold M. Lyon


Harold Morgan Lyon was born in Ravenna, Ohio, Dec. 2, 1894, the son of Walter A. and Anna (Morgan) Lyon.


He received his education in the Ravenna public schools and at Ohio State University, where he received his degree in 1919.


In World War I Mr. Lyon entered the U. S. armed forces, serving until 1919. When he returned he entered the firm of Lyon & Morgan and in 1921 purchased the interest of his father. The drug store of Lyon & Morgan has had a very in- teresting existence. It was established by Dr. Isaac Swift in 1815, at the present time making the store the second oldest drug store in Ohio in continuous existence.


Mr. Lyon was married July 15, 1923, to Lucille Budd, daughter of Curtis E. and Lettie (Braden) Budd of Loudon- ville, Ohio. Mr. Budd was Loudonville superintendent of schools for many years. The Lyons have one child, now Mrs. Robert D. Beachy.


Mr. and Mrs. Lyons belong to the First Christian Church of Ravenna. He is a charter member of American Legion Post No. 331; belongs to Unity Lodge No. 12, Masons; and to the Consistory and Shrine in Cleveland.


The Lyons are enthusiastic collectors and are especially interested in early Ravenna glass ware.


Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mariana, Sr.


Tom Mariana Sr. was born in Cleveland in 1909. He was the son of Vincent and Sara Maiorana Mariana. The parents were born in the town of Vieste, Sicily. When still in early childhood Tom came to Ravenna with his parents. There he worked his way through school and graduated from Ravenna High School in 1930.


In 1931 he married Emma Castellano. They have three children. They are Thomas, Jr .; Joyce, now Mrs. Roy Morgan; and Nancy.


Mr. Mariana operated a dry cleaning establishment for four years and since 1943 has been employed by the A. C. Williams ,Co.


From his high school days he has been active in sports. He still does umpiring at base- ball games and refereeing at football games as well as boxing matches. He was city recrea- tion director under W.P.A. and later during summers.


Mr. Mariana will always be remembered as the founder of the baseball Little League

of Portage County and for his interest in the youth of the com- munity. In 1954 he was given the Outstanding Citizenship Award by the Ravenna Junior Chamber of Commerce. In 1957 he was given a testimonial dinner, with 400 people present.


He is a member of the K. of C., and St. Vincent de Paul Society. Mrs. Mariana, who also attended Ravenna High School, is active in church circles. Both Mr. and Mrs. Mariana belong to the Immaculate Conception Church.


Mr. and Mrs. Tom Mariana, Sr.


Edith L. Marsh


Edith Lucille Marsh was born in Ravenna, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Marsh. The father was a merchant, member of the board of education, charter member of the Board of Trade and Portage County treasurer. Her mother was Grace Ashley Marsh, daugh- ter of Rev. and Mrs. B. F. Ashley.


Miss Marsh was educated in Ravenna, graduating from the high school in 1910. She entered the nursing field, graduating from Lakeside Hospital, Cleveland, in 1914. She was one of the first nurses working for the Anti-T. B. League in its fresh air camp for children. Later, she participated in expansion of the same work for the City of Cleveland at Warrens- ville over a period of 11 years. Later, she took a course at the Lakeside School of Anesthesia. After this she went to St. Louis, being connected with St. Johns, Jewish Hospital and Wash- ington Hospital as anesthetist for Dr. Blair, plastic surgeon.


In August, 1931, she joined the Nurses on Horseback, Frontier Nursing Service of Kentucky. There she helped in building and staffing the Nursery Center at Brutus, Ky. A scholarship given to her by Sir Leslie Mckenzie of Scotland made possible further training in mid-wifery at Simpson Memorial Hospital, with lectures, at Edinburgh. She graduated as a licensed mid-wife in 1931 and was made a member of the Nurses Assn. of Nova Scotia and authorized to practice in Kentucky. She carried on survey work in the Highlands and Scottish Islands, then going to Copenhagen and Vienna for observation work in mid-wifery.


After her work with the Nurses on Horseback she returned to Ravenna and became visiting nurse, establishing the pre-natal classes and well babies clinic.


In 1948 she was asked to organize the Nursing Home for Chronically Ill in Cuyahoga county and served as its superintendent. She was the author of a book, "Nursing Care In Chronic Disease," a first in its field.


She died June 24, 1950, in Bay Village, where her mother, Maud Freeman Marsh, who succeeded her in death, made her home.


Judge George G. McClelland


George G. McClelland was born May 25, 1902, in Portland, Oregon, son of Melzar D. McClelland and Irma (Rugh) McClelland. He was educated at Pikeville College Academy, Pikeville, Kentucky; Butler, Pennsylvania, High School and Grove City, Pennsylvania, Col-

lege. He attended Columbia University and received his law degree from Akron Law School. He came to Ravenna in 1927 as assistant principal of the Ravenna City High School, where he taught and coached public speaking for seven years. Three times teams coached by Mr. McClelland competed for the state debate championship at Columbus and twice were victorious.


In 1933 he was admitted to the Bar and a year later was elected Clerk of Courts of Portage County.


Two years later he was appointed Probate Judge and was three times re-elected. In 1945 he resigned as Probate Judge to enter the private practice of law in which he is presently engaged. He is a partner with Ward W. Davis in the firm of Davis & McClelland at Ravenna.
