Mr. McClelland was elected City Solicitor of Ravenna in 1947 and has served ever since. He has been active in com- munity and church circles. He was President of Ravenna Kiwanis Club and Moderator of the First Congregational Church. He has served on many other boards and civic com- mittees.
He is married to Sarah Kuhn McClelland of Hooker, Pennsylvania. They have two children, Patricia Ann and Bruce William.
John H. Miles, Sr.
John H. Miles, Sr., was one of three boys born to John H. and Margaret Miles of Hollyhead, Wales. He was born on May 5, 1892.
After the death of his father, an uncle brought the family from Hollyhead to Toronto, Canada, where he lived until he finished school.
Some time later Mr. Miles came to Detroit, where he worked for an automobile com- pany, only later to move on to Akron, where he continued to live and work until enlisting in the United States Army for service in World War I.
After discharge from the service, he came back to Akron and was employed by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company; and he also attended Actual Business College at this time. It was while living in Akron and attending school that he was married to Miss Bertha Morgan, on June 25, 1921. Following this marriage, and while living in Akron, he spent many years as a salesman of business machines and office appliances.
Some years later he and his family moved to Ravenna, and he took employment at the Ravenna Arsenal during the second world war.
It was in 1943 that he accepted the position of Deputy County Auditor of Portage County. He remained in this posi- tion until his retirement in January of 1957.
Death came on June 7, 1957. He is survived by his wife, Bertha; two children, John H. Miles, Jr., of Ravenna, and Mrs. M. H. Layfield, of Akron; and one brother, George, of Toronto, Canada.
Edward P. Montigney
Edward Paul Montigney was born August 2, 1903, at Ravenna, Ohio. He was the son of Louis and Matilda (Florence) Montigney. His father was born in Canada and his mother

in Oswego, N. Y. Both were of French Canadian ancestry.
He was educated in the Ravenna schools and graduated from Ravenna High School. After this he went to work for the A. H. Webb hardware store, remaining there from 1922 to 1937.
Mr. Montigney and his brother William organized their own hardware store in July, 1937, and commenced business on North Chestnut St. In 1944 they purchased the Fairchild Block on E. Main St., and moved their business to that loca- tion.
He was married Dec., 1921 to Miss Hallie Blanche Skelly of Canton. They have one son, Alfred Montigney, now man- ager of the appliance department of the Montigney Hardware. There are two grandchildren-Sheryl Ann Montigney, age 11; and Alfred Louis Montigney, age 3 years.
Mr. Montigney is a devoted family man and one of his main interests is in the care of his premises and the cultiva- tion of flowers.
William G. Montigney
William George Montigney was born November 1, 1890, in Wellsville, Ohio. He was the son of Lewis and Matilda Florence Montigney.
When he was four years of age the family moved to Ravenna, where he attended the local schools. At an early age he was employed as a body builder by the Riddle Coach & Hearse Co., remaining 12 years in that capacity.
On Nov. 24, 1917, he married Eva Newton, a graduate nurse at the White Hospital. Later he was employed by the Mason Tire & Rubber Co. at Kent, and the Davey Tree Ex- pert Co. in the same city.
On May 29, 1944, he started a hardware store on North Chestnut St., Ravenna, in which business he was quite success- ful. Later his brother Edward was associated with him and the Fairchild Building, at 115 E. Main St., Ravenna, was bought for a new location. They now have what is thought to be the largest hardware concern in Portage county, with 27
employes.
Mr. Montigney is a member of the B.P.O.E. lodge of Ravenna.
Dr. and Mrs. Bernard H. Nichols
Bernard Henry Nichols, son of Samuel and Ada Nichols, was born December 18, 1876, at Atwater, O. After attending grammar and high school there, he went to Starling Medical School, now Ohio State University, graduating in 1904. He then established himself in the practice of medicine at Ravenna. Later he became affiliated with the White Hospital and in 1910 set up the first diagnostic X-Ray laboratory in Portage County.
In World War I he entered U. S. Army service and spent two years overseas. For his work there he received a special citation from Commander-in-Chief John J. Pershing. On his return he became head radiologist in the Cleveland Clinic, commuting to Cleveland, and

served in the same capacity at Robinson Memorial Hospital, Ravenna. Through his numerous publications, lectures and designing of X-Ray apparatus he became internationally known. One book published was "Roentgenological Studies of the Urinary Tract." He was a leader in professional societies; for 15 years was a member of the Ravenna board of education and served two terms on the Ra- venna city council. He was past president of the Radiological So- ciety of North America, the larg- est of its kind in the world. In 1946 he retired from the Cleve- land Clinic and in 1951 from Robinson Memorial Hospital.
In December, 1940, Dr. Nichols married Martha Prillaman who was born in Delphos, Ohio. She had been in the business world and after coming to Ravenna be- came dedicated to her home and community. Dr. and Mrs. Nichols, in their interest in mankind gener- ally, as a hobby concentrated in raising money for worthwhile or- Dr. and Mrs. Bernard H. Nichols ganizations, their major projects being the hospital, Portage County Home, Grace Episcopal Church and Happy Day School. In 1952 they received the Ravenna Jaycee award for outstanding citizenship.
Joseph V. Piccione
Joseph Victor Piccione was born in Ravenna June 1, 1918, the son of Sabatino and Louise (Augustine) Piccione who were natives of Mark Province of Ascoli Piceno, Italy. The parents came to Ravenna in 1912 where Mr. Piccione secured employment as track man on the Penna. R.R.
Joseph Piccione secured his education in the local schools of Ravenna, graduating in 1935. He then attended Bohecker's Business College for three years, part of the time in evening classes.
When World War II broke out he enlisted in the army in March, 1942. He saw service in the states and was dis- charged in September, 1943.
On April 29, 1944, Mr. Piccione was married to Rita Mary Horning of Randolph, daughter of Joseph and Bernetta (Ullom) Horning. Three children were born to them. They are: Patricia Louise, Jan. 22, 1946; Julie Ann, June 9, 1953; and Lisa Maria, June 26, 1955.
Mr. Piccione was employed as relief agent for the Penna. R. R. Co., Cleveland Division, from 1943 to 1948. In May of 1948, in partnership with his brother Vincent, he bought the R. W. Essig jewelry store. In June, 1951, the Sontum building in which they were located, collapsed because of the condi- tion of adjacent buildings, with almost complete loss for their stock of goods. They then purchased the lot next door, at the

present location, and stocked it with a complete line of fine jewelry of all kinds.
Mr. Piccione is a member of the K. of C., Kiwanis Club, F.O.E., American Legion and Immaculate Conception Church where he is a member of the choir. He is also a member of the Board of Directors, Ravenna Chamber of Commerce, and chairman of the retail division.
Vincent A. Piccione
Vincent Anthony Piccione was born in Ravenna, May 25, 1920. He was the son of Sabatino and Louise (Augustino) Piccione, who were natives of the Province of Ascoli Piceno, Italy. He is of one of four children, Antonina, Joseph, Vincent and Domonic (de- ceased). The parents came to Ravenna in 1912 and his father was employed as trackman by the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. Vincent attended the schools of Ravenna and graduated from Ravenna High School in 1939.
At the age of twelve he started to work for Kreinberg Jewelers after school and during vacations. After graduation he continued work there until 1942 when he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He received a medi- cal discharge in 1943, after which he resumed work for Kreinbergs. In February, 1945, he started a horology course at Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois. This included watch making, engraving, and making jewelery. Completing the course in November, 1946 he resumed his work at Krein- bergs as a watchmaker until April of 1948. In May of 1948, he with his brother Joseph purchased the Essig Jewelery Store in Ravenna. In June, 1951 the building collapsed and nearly all their large stock was a complete loss. The Piccione brothers owned the property next to the collapsed building upon which they erected a new and modern jewelry store now call- ed Picciones Jewelers.
On April 7, 1956, Mr. Piccione married Josephine Mary Mastey of Detroit, Michigan, daughter of Stephen and Cath- erine (Sokolowski) Mastey. The father was a native of Austria and the mother a native of Warsaw, Poland.
Mr. Piccione is a member of the K. of C., Rotary Club, American Legion, Immaculate Conception parish ushers club and Loyal Order of the Moose.
Cyril R. Porthouse
Cyril Routledge Porthouse was born Jan. 3, 1911, in Ravenna, Ohio. He was the son of David Routledge and Iva Belle (Moncrief) Porthouse.
He attended the Ravenna city schools, graduating from the high school in 1928. He then attended Ohio State University, from which he received a B.Ch.E. degree in 1932, and a M.Sc. in 1933.
Following this he went to work for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.
Mr. Porthouse was married October 21, 1933, to Miss Robert Diehl, daughter of John H. and Nellie G. (Bailey) Diehl. The couple have four children-Dian Joan, John David,

In 1937 Mr. Porthouse became an employe of the Pyra- mid Rubber Co. of Ravenna and soon moved up through the various responsible offices of this successful concern, of which he is now the executive head and director.
He became interested in other business enterprises and in addition to the Ravenna position he is President and Di- rector, Oil City Glass Company; President and Director, Har- cort Manufacturing Co .; President and Director, Rexware, Inc .; Vice Pres. and Director, Fred Arbogast Co., Inc .; Direc- tor and Chairman Executive Committee, A. G. Spalding & Bros., Inc .; Director, A. G. Spalding Sporting Goods Co. He also holds directorships in the Rawlings Sporting Goods Co., Michigan Plating and Stamping Co., Alco Oil & Chemical Co., and the Charter Foundation.
Earl G. Proehl
Earl G. Proehl was born at Barberton, Ohio, on the old O. C. Barber estate, on January 15, 1886. He was the son of George and Amanda (Burgner) Proehl.
When he was a child the family moved to Rootstown, Portage County, where he re- ceived his education in the Maple Grove district.
At the age of fifteen the boy learned the carpenter trade which he has followed ever since. On October 12, 1910, he was married to Nina S. Unger, daughter of Sylvanus and Mary (Craig) Unger of Randolph. They have one son, Norman Earl, born July 14, 1912. He is married to the former Vida Ernst and they have one daughter, Linda.
Mr. Proehl started in the contracting business in 1915, putting up many homes in both Ravenna and Kent. In 1921 he entered into partnership with Mr. Bradford under the firm name of the Ravenna Lumber & Supply Co., which con- tinued until 1926, when it was sold to the present owner. He then continued carpentering and his son is now associated with him in this business.
Mr. Proehl has been a stockholder and director of the Ravenna Savings & Loan Co. for the past thirty years and has been its president for five years.
Mr. and Mrs. Proehl are members of the First Christian church of Ravenna. Mrs. Proehl belongs to the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Calvin P. Rausch
Calvin Peter Rausch, Superintendent of Portage County Schools, began teaching soon after he completed high school and has an enviable record of work done and responsibil- ities performed in that vocation.
He was born May 1, 1899, in Ragersville, Tuscarawas County, son of Peter and Mar- garet (Steinebrey) Rausch. The first Rausches came to America in 1735 from Germany where they were a distinguished family. An ancestor of Calvin fought in the American army in the Revolution. Calvin was one of seven children. He attended school at Ragersville and

in 1916 graduated from the Sugar Creek-Shanesville High School. In the following two years he taught in one-room grade schools in Tuscarawas County and two years more at Uniontown in Stark County. He then became principal at Palmyra, Mantua Center and Ra- venna Township-a total of 11 years. In 1934 he was elected County Superintendent of Schools and since then has had his official headquarters at Ravenna, during which time he has seen enrollments nearly double and problems of administration increase.
In his teaching years he continued his own education, attending several colleges, in 1925 receiving a diploma from Kent State University and in 1951 a Masters degree from Akron University. He belongs to various state and national educational associations and is vice president of the North- east Ohio district.
Mr. Rausch is much interested in welfare work. He has been a member and officer of the Child Welfare League, roll chairman Red Cross, president of Round Table and Rotary Club. He served on various church groups of the Methodist Church and has been Superintendent of the Sunday school. Music is also one of his interests. Fraternally he is a Blue Lodge, Royal Arch and Council Mason. In college he was a member of the Kappa Mu Kappa fraternity. In politics he is independent.
On August 27, 1931, Mr. Rausch married Ruth Geib, daughter of William and Edna (Mattoon) Geib. The mother was born in Atwater and the father, a native of Stark County, was a building contractor in Cuyahoga Falls. The four children of Mr. and Mrs. Rausch are Patricia Ann, elementary teacher; David Calvin, student at Kent State; James Peter, United States Air Force; and Philip Michael, high school student. The family lives at 1677 Kent- Ravenna Road, Ravenna. Mr. Rausch died in November, 1957.
Elmer J. Redmond
Elmer J. Redmond was born in Alliance, Ohio, May 5, 1910. The son of Bert Redmond and Ada (Shultz) Redmond. He graduated from Ravenna High School and attended Kent State University and Ohio State University and graduated from The Akron Law School.
He married Dorothy Gallaway of Kent, Ohio, on No- vember 15, 1930. They are parents of one son, Joseph E. Redmond who was born September 21, 1947. Mr. Redmond was a teacher at Brady Lake School for four years and then began the practise of law in Ravenna in 1934. He served overseas with the 20th Bomber Command during World War II and then graduated from the Judge Advocate General's Law School at the University of Michigan.
Mr. Redmond is Past Chancellor Commander of the Knights of Pythias, Past Exalted Ruler of Ravenna Elks and a member of various civic organization. He has been Secre- tary-Treasurer of the Western Reserve National Farm Loan Association since 1935, belongs to the Methodist Church, has been President of the Portage County Bar Association and is a member of the Ohio and American Bar Association. Mr. Redmond has been counsel for the Portage County Automobile Dealer's Association since 1935.

Frank L. Rhodes
Frank Lewis Rhodes was born in Suffield, Ohio, October 11, 1900. He was the son of William J. and Rose (Trares) Rhodes. His early schooling was obtained at St. Joseph's parochial school, Randolph. He also took a two year commercial course.
Mr. Rhodes helped on his father's farm until 1930, when he went to Akron where he worked on a bakery route until 1942 when he went into partnership with his brother August under the name of the Ravenna Tire Service. This business has been conducted suc- cessfully ever since. They specialize in re-treading and carry a large and complete line of tires for farm machinery. They are now distributors for Goodyear tires and tubes. In 1948 Mr. Rhodes bought the interest of his brother, who moved to California.
On June 18, 1937, Mr. Rhodes married Alma E. Wise of Suffield, daughter of Emmet and Dora Wise. To them five children were born. These are Daniel Lewis and David Wil- liam, twins, born Aug. 8, 1939; Lois Marie, June 7, 1943; Mary Ellen, Jan. 29, 1944; and Ruth Ann, June 1, 1949.
Mr. Rhodes is a member of the Knights of Columbus and Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna.
Dr. and Mrs. L. R. Richardson
Dr. L. R. Richardson was born in Summit County, Ohio, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Richardson. He was graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School and worked at Goodyear Corporation in Akron for two years before entering Veterinary College at Ohio State Uni- versity. In 1931 he received his degree, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and Master of Science the following year. While at Ohio State he was elected member of Sigma Xi, honorary scientific fraternity.
After graduation, Dr. Richard- son married the former Mildred A. Kline of Harrisburg, Pa. and started practice in Kent. Less than a year later, he moved to Ravenna where he continued practicing and established Richardson Animal Hospital. He is a member of First Methodist Church, Ravenna; Ki- wanis Club; Elks; Ohio State Vet- erinary Medical Ass'n .; American Veterinary Medical Association. The couple has one son, Jay.

Henry W. Riddle
Henry Warner Riddle was born in Allegheny, Penna., Feb. 8, 1838, being the son of Hugh and Eliza (Thornburgh) Riddle, of Scotch-Irish ancestry. The father, Hugh Riddle, came to the United States from his native country of Monoghan, Ireland.
Henry W. Riddle came to Ravenna in 1860 to work in N. D. Clark carriage factory as a woodworker. After a few years employment, he and his brother-in-law purchased the factory and operated it under the name of Merts & Riddle. In 1891, Mr. Riddle bought Mr. Merts' interests and conducted the business as the Riddle Coach & Hearse Co. In the manufacture of hearses the com- pany enjoyed a wide reputation.
Mr. Riddle married Emily H. Robinson, a sister of the late Judge Geo. F. Robinson.
As Mr. Riddle prospered, he worked to improve the town and built many business blocks and homes. In whatever he undertook, he acted with energy and decision. For a num- ber of years he was president of the Ravenna National Bank. He was a member of the Congregational Church, Unity Lodge No. 12, F. & A. M .; Crescent Lodge No. 225, Knights of Pythias; and Ravenna Lodge No. 1076, B. P. O. E. His hobby was the collection of clocks. In his large collection were time pieces of all shapes and sizes, from the tallest grandfather clocks to the tiniest that could be made. After Mr. Riddle's death in 1920, the collection was broken up.
Mr. and Mrs. Riddle were the parents of four children; Bessie Eleanor Riddle Paltz- groff, Maxwell Riddle, Aimee Riddle Merrill, and Henry Warner Riddle, Jr.
Henry Warner Riddle, Jr.
Henry Warner Riddle, Jr., was born in Ravenna, Sept. 4, 1880. He was the son of Henry Warner and Emily (Rob- inson) Riddle. The mother was a daughter of George Robin- son, an engineer and banker of Ravenna, and a sister of the late Judge George F. Robinson.
Mr. Riddle received his education in the Ravenna public schools; the Peekskill Military Academy, Peekskill, N. Y .; and Western Reserve Academy, at Hudson, Ohio.
He was married Nov. 2, 1904, to Mary Estelle FitzGerald, a daughter of Aaron Ogden Fitz-Gerald, a varnish manu- facturer, at her home in Newark, N. J.
At an early age Mr. Riddle became a partner in the Riddle Coach & Hearse Co. in the manufacture of coaches and hearses. He entered politics and at the age of 21 was in 1902 elected as mayor of Ravenna and said to be the youngest mayor in the United States at that time. He was re-elected and served two full terms.

He took an interest in other public affairs, and for many years was an officer in the Portage County Agricultural Society, the Portage County Improvement Association, and the Portage County Hospital organization. He was a hospital trustee 27 years.
At this writing he has been an officer of the First Savings & Trust Co. for 45 years. He is a member of the Ravenna Congregational church; various conservation organizations and the B. P. O. Elks, No. 1076.
Mr. and Mrs. Riddle were the parents of five children: Harriet Riddle Jones, Maxwell Riddle, Eleanor Riddle Long, Janet Riddle Ward, and Hugh W. Riddle.
Hugh W. Riddle
Hugh Warner Riddle, second son of Henry Warner, Jr. and Mary (Fitz-Gerald) Riddle was born at the family home, Ryedale, July 15, 1916. He attended Ravenna Township and Ravenna High School, graduating in 1934. After high school Hugh attended Case Institute of Technology and received a Bachelor of Science in Mechan- ical Engineering in 1938. From Case his next step was The Warner & Swasey Co. where he was employed for 4-1/2 years.
Late in 1942 he enlisted in the Naval Reserve; his train- ing was received at the U. S. Naval Academy, and he was re- tained as an instructor for a year after being commissioned Ensign. The next assignment was aboard a light cruiser as Assistant Main Engine Officer and later as Main Engine Officer.
On his discharge from the Navy, Hugh in company with G. F. Ward, founded The Ward-Riddle Company of which he is president. He is also one of the founders and vice president of Allen Aircraft Products, Inc.
Hugh was married to Miss Mary Lee Hudson of Hudson in 1948. They have three sons, Bruce, Tom, and Scott. He is a past moderator of the Congregational Church, a Trustee of Robinson Memorial Hospital and a Trustee of The Ravenna B. P. O. E. 1076.
Maxwell Riddle
Maxwell Riddle is the son of Henry Warner Riddle, Jr. and Mary E. Fitz-Gerald Riddle. He was born July 29, 1907 at his parent's home, Ryedale Farm, where he still lives. He graduated from Ravenna High School in 1925, and from the University of Arizona in 1929. He took additional work at Bohecker's Business College in Ravenna.
He has been a reporter and columnist for the Cleveland Press for nearly 20 years, and previously served as turf editor for a national feature syndicate, Newspaper Enter- prise Assn.
Mr. Riddle is an internationally known dog judge, having officiated at shows as far apart as Pretoria, South Africa, Victoria, B. C., Honolulu, Hawaii, and Havana, Cuba. He is the author of a number of books on dogs.
He is married to the former Martha A. Hurd of Collins. They have two children, Betsy, 21, and Henry Warner Riddle III, 19. Their first child, Marya, died at birth.

Mr. Riddle has been a member of the First Congregational Church for 38 years, and has served as deacon and chairman of the board of trustees. He edited The Tower for the church when it led in the formation of the Good Government Group, an organization which drove organized gambling out of the county.
Tom H. Ritenour
Tom H. Ritenour was born at Lima, Ohio, March 4, 1893. He was the son of Newton N. and Sally Jane (Whitmer) Ritenour, of English-French ancestry. He received his educa- tion in the Lima schools.
Mr. Ritenour was married to Miss Miriam Ernestine Dennis, April 26, 1914. She was the daughter of Ben and Anna Dennis, the father being a restaurant owner in Lima.
In April of 1926 they came to Ravenna where he pur- chased the Ravenna Laundry, located at Prospect and Spruce Sts., and on May 30, 1943, he moved the plant to the old Wagon Wheel Works, at Lynn and Hickory Way. In May, 1952, he built the present plant and moved in during No- vember of that year under the name of the Ravenna Dry Cleaners. During 1936 he also opened a Dry Cleaning shop in Kent and built the Kent building at 112 Day St. in 1953.
Mr. Ritenour entered politics in Ravenna and in 1947 was elected mayor of the city, in which office he served two full terms. He was the only Democratic mayor of the city in a period of 25 years.
He is a member of the Ravenna Congregational church, F.&A.M., the Scottish Rite Bodies Valley of Cleveland; Ra- venna Order of Eastern Star; and B.P.O. Elks, 1076.
