On November 22, 1922, Mr. Miller married Estella Helen Knapp, daughter of Louis J. and Mary Ann (May) Knapp of Randolph. To them four children were born-Wilber John,

He is a member of the K. of C., B.P.O.E. and the Akron Liedertafel. Both Mr. and Mrs. Miller are members of St. Joseph's Parish and Mrs. Miller is active in church cirles.


Mr. and Mrs. Urban J. Paulus


Urban J. Paulus was born in Suffield, O., May 25, 1900, son of Frank W. and Mary Rothermel Paulus. He received his education in Coler district school in Suffield and at- tended St. Joseph's parochial school for two years.


He worked for his father and neighbors on the farm until 1922 when he went to Michi- gan where he took a three-months course at Michigan State Auto School. Following this he worked for Chrysler for eight months, then came to Akron where he was employed as auto mechanic.


On July 20, 1926, he married Anna Mae Rider, daughter of Jo- seph S. and Therese Miltenberger Rider of Cumberland, Md. Nine children were born: Carl James; Rita Mary (now Mrs. Harry Kot- kowski); Roy Herman; Glenn Frederick; twins Jean Mary (now Mrs. Ralph Stanley) and Jane Mary (now Mrs. John Bedard); Ann Mary; Mark Robert and Lee Edward.


Mr. and Mrs. Urban J. Paulus


In August, 1929, Mr. Paulus came back to St. Joseph and with his brother, Herman, established Paulus Bros. Garage. He since bought his brother's interest and continues to this date.


Mr. Paulus was a charter member of St. Joseph Council K. of C. and Mrs. Paulus is a member of St. Joseph Altar Society. Both are members of St. Joseph Parish.


Ira H. Shanafelt


Ira H. Shanafelt was born March 4, 1864 at Bolivar, Ohio, the son of Hiram Shanafelt and Ellen (Funk) Shanafelt. His father died when Ira was only 12 years old leaving his mother with three daughters and son Ira.


It then became necessary for Ira to start earning his own livelihood as his mother never re-married. He lived with relatives and friends, working and earning small amounts to pay his own way. It was while living with his uncle Levi Shanafelt on the farm, now owned by Ebies, that he did chores at the barn morning and night and walked to and from Brimfield 2-1/2 miles away to attend grade school.


After finishing grade school he attended High School in Kent, Ohio, and earned his tuition by assisting in the janitor work. He attended Mt. Union College and completed the business course then offered. He passed the Portage County teachers examination and was eligible to teach in the district schools. One of his assignments was the Porter School District in Suffield Township.


He entered business in Suffield at the age of 23 which later became I. H. Shanafelt &

Company, retailer of general merchandise. This company he operated for 55 years. At the age of 24 he married Minnie Stout, who has been a life resident of Suffield. There were born three sons and three daughters; one daughter died in infancy. The children, Hiram A., now deceased; Owen C .; Hazel O'Malley, Lucille Feller and Paul W., all were born in Suffield.


He was a member of the Suffield Reformed Church, a member of the Board of Directors of the Lake Mutual Insurance Company and The Mogadore Savings Bank. He served on the Portage County Board of Education for several terms and the War Bond Committee of World War I. He died March 16, 1946.


WINDHAM


James L. Kline


James L. Kline was born in Mathew, Indiana, April 13, 1904. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Kline, now living at 458 West Main St., Ravenna.


James L. Kline came to Ravenna in 1907. He secured his education in Ravenna and in the Windham High School. He studied piano for eight years and in this connection played for various dance bands.


In 1924 he married Verda Lange of Shalersville. She died July 5, 1946. Mr. and Mrs. Kline were the parents of six children-William L. and Robert Kline of Shalersville; James L., Jr., Larry Lee, Myron D., and Frances, at home.


In 1924 Mr. Kline was manager for the E. D. Neikirk 5 and 10 cent stores in Newcomerstown. Later he was manager of a J. J. Newberry 5 and 10 cent store in Chillicothe, O.


Later he entered the grocery business, starting as a clerk for the Harry Longcoy store in Kent. He was also manager of A. & P. Co. stores in Ravenna, Garrettsville and Windham.


In politics Mr. Kline is a Democrat. He served first as a party committeeman in Shalersville and in 1944 was Demo- cratic candidate for county auditor, losing by a small margin. He was also a member of the Shalersville Board of Education and also served as a member of the Board of Public Affairs in Windham.


In the election of Nov. 6, 1956, he was elected County Commissioner and is currently serving his four year term, while continuing to operate his 80 acres farm in Windham.


He is married to Opal Spencer of Windham.


Mr. and Mrs. David E. Mullett


David Edward Mullett was born on a farm in Layland, Clark Twp., Coshocton County, Ohio, October 29, 1882. He was the son of David and Elizabeth (Infield) Mullett. His educa- tion was in the local district schools, after which he worked with his father on the farm un- til he was 21, when he secured employment with the C. A. & C. Railroad Co. (now Penn- sylvania). He was employed as brakeman and flagman on the perishable freight trains run- ning between Columbus and Cleveland, which took preference over passenger trains.


After railroading for three years he operated a farm near Wooster. On November 15,

1908, he was married to Mary Seifert, daughter of Erasmus and Margaret Seifert of Wooster. Five children were born to the couple. They are Florence Eleanor, now Mrs. Thompson; Althea Fern, now Mrs. Walter Rahz; Margaret Eliza- beth, now Mrs. Paul Braden; Ed- ward, Jr., and Raymond Harold.


In 1908 the family moved to Akron where he was employed in various rubber factories, most of the time as foreman. These in- cluded the Diamond Rubber Co., the Excell Tire and the Trump Co., all in a period of 15 years. In 1923 he came to Windham while working for the Denman Mr. and Mrs. David E. Mullett Rubber Co. of Leavittsburg as mill man for 16 years. In 1941 he helped build the housing project there, continuing with the government for six and one-half years. In March, 1946, he purchased his present farm, which was formerly known as the Conant and H. W. Donaldson farm. It is now being al- lotted for residences.


Mr. Mullett served as township trustee from 1935 to 1949. Mrs. Mullett is active in church circles in Windham.
