In 1944 he was elected a director in the Ohio Apple In- stitute and in 1947 he was elected treasurer, an office which he still holds.


In 1956, Mr. McConnell was elected Second Vice President of the Ohio State Horti- cultural Society.


Mr. and Mrs. Wells B. Shilliday


Wells Bacon Shilliday was born in Edinburg Township, June 21, 1884. He was the son of David P. and Mary (Bacon) Shilliday.


As a boy he attended school in Edinburg, graduating from the high school in 1902.

He then took a course at the old Northeastern Ohio Normal Col- lege at Canfield, graduating in 1905. After that he worked on his father's farm east of Edinburg Center.


On June 26, 1907, Mr. Shilli- day was married to Miss Mary A. Phillips who was born Dec. 16, 1883, in Edinburg. She attended school in Palmyra and graduated with Mr. Shilliday at Edinburg in 1902. She took a teaching course at Mount Union college and a year at Hiram College, after which she taught district schools three years.


In 1927 the Shillidays pur- chased the farm where they now live. Three children were born to them. These are Ernestine, now Mrs. Stanley R. Gibson of Warren; David Park of Edinburg; and Mary Jeanette, now Mrs. Jason F. Burley of Cuy- ahoga Falls, Ohio.


Mr. Shilliday has served two two-year terms as clerk of the school board and township. In 1955 he was elected township trustee for a four-year term. Mrs. Shilliday has served on € the school board for eight years.


Mr. Shilliday is a member of the Grange, Farm Bureau and Masonic order. Mrs. Shilli- day belongs to the Eastern Star and D.A.R. and both are members of the Edinburg United Church.


There are nine gandchildren and six great grandchildren.


FRANKLIN-KENT


Harry F. Ackworth


Harry F. Ackworth was born in Kent, July 17, 1899. His parents were Charles T. and Dora M. (Bertram) Ackworth. His grandparents, James and Angeline (Hall) Ackworth were of English descent, while Alexander B. and Margaret (Hunt) Bertram were natives of Scotland.


Mr. Ackworth attended the Kent public schools and graduated from Central High in 1917. He then attended the Akron Actual Business College, graduating in 1918. From 1918 to 1920 he worked at the Kent Erie Shops and from 1920 to 1925 was employed by the Mason Tire & Rubber Co. Following this was a period at the B. F. Goodrich Co. as a time study engineer; American Hard Rubber Company from 1934 to 1942 as a time study engineer. Since 1942 he has been with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. as in- dustrial engineer.


On September 1, 1921 he was married to Elno Irene Palmer, daughter of Lewis and Almeda (Swinehart) Palmer

of Stow. One son, Robert Charles, was born March 2, 1923. He is a writer of fiction and is employed as assistant to the editor of a New York Publishing Company.


Since 1914 Mr. Ackworth has been associated with the dancing business. Until 1922 he played piano in "Bill Lee's 20th Century Orchestra" for his uncle, J. E. Bertram who was a professor; also at Brady Lake in season. From 1922 to 1932 he had his own orchestra which was very popular with the public. From 1927 to 1946 he operated modern and old-fashioned dances in Kent's Hall during the winter dancing seasons. From 1935 to the present he has been owner and operator of Maple Rest Gardens, Rootstown which is probably one of the best known ball rooms for old-fashioned dancing in Ohio.


Mr. Ackworth is a member of the Episcopal Church, the Kent Elks Club and all Masonic organizations including Kent Rockton Lodge F. & A. M., Kent Chapter, Akron Council, Akron Commandry, Canton Scottish Rites and Tadmor Shrine.


Mrs. Ackworth is a graduate of the Stow Public Schools and Kent State University. She did some graduate work at Western Reserve University in Cleveland and since 1926 has taught in the Stow and Cuyahoga Falls schools. She is a member of the Phi Mu sorority, Kappa Delta Pi, the Emblem Club and the Episcopal Church.


D. R. Alden


David Russel Alden, the youngest but one of nine children of Edward H. and Hercey (Dunham) Alden, was born on a farm near Middlefield, Ohio, November 16, 1881. The family moved to Hiram, Ohio in 1891 where, at Hiram College, Mr. Alden received his education, being granted the A.B. degree in 1910. The completion of his college work was delayed by a severe attack of typhoid fever and by his work on the family farm. Attending Hiram College at this time was Miss Linna Mann of Fredericktown, Ohio, whom he came to know and love. They were married in 1910 and established their home in Kent where he had obtained a position as a teacher in old Central School.


Although his tenure in the Kent school system was short, his interest in education con- tinued in Christian education. He was an active member of First Christian Church, Kent, for 34 years, holding almost every office in church and Sunday school. The present church building stands as a monument to his faith, hard work and perseverance.


After leaving the teaching profession, he entered the dry goods business, first as manager of Shively's Kent store, and later established his own business in Kent. He spec- ialized in window shades and floor coverings, operating his firm from 1930 under the name Alden Shade Shop.


Surviving at his death in October, 1944 were his wife and sons: Clayton Edward, school principal, of Bedford, O .; David Caywood, Bursar, Miami University, Oxford, O .; and Paul Dunham, librarian, of Kent.


Clinton E. Allen


Clinton E. Allen was born November 18, 1895, to Ethan and Henrietta Newton Allen, in the family home, 421 Summit Street, Kent, Ohio. He attended the public schools of Kent, and graduated from the old Central High School in 1913. When a sophomore at Ohio State University he enlisted in the army, and volunteered to go abroad with Company F, Second Engineers. He was wounded at Chateau Thierry and suffered the amputation of one leg. He was the first Purple Heart veteran to return to Kent from the First World War.


After a brief period of convalescence, he returned to Ohio State University and re- ceived a Bachelors Degree in the School of Commerce. He returned to Kent and was for a while employed as accountant for the Besaw Motors Company. Later he became a member

of the accounting department of the Davey Tree Company, remaining with the company till his death.


He was married to Florence Babb August 23, 1940, in the parsonage of the Christian Church of Kent, of which church he was a life long member. They built a home at 333 Oakwood Drive, University Heights, Kent, which was his home till his death.


In January, 1949, he was stricken with malignant hyper- tension, an illness not yet understood or controlled by med- ical science. He died in the Akron City Hospital, March 1, 1949. He was survived by his wife, his brother Emmet, his sisters Frances Allen Renouf (Mrs. J. N.), and Stella Allen Burt (Mrs. C. W.), two nephews, Gardner Allen and Bartlett B. Allen, and a niece, Phyllis Burt Schram.


Bennie Anderson


Bennie Anderson was born Oct. 27, 1893, at Dothan, Houston County, Alabama. He was one of 17 children, several of which died in childhood. He was the son of Jonas J. and Rena (Edward) Anderson. -


He attended local schools, then worked on the farm and in saw mill work. He was employed by the Williams & Voris Lumber Co.


He was married June 7, 1911, to Emma Parker. To the couple were born three children. These are Ruth Mae, Travis Otis, and Felix.


The Andersons came to Kent in November, 1923, and for a short time Mr. Anderson worked for the Erie Railroad Co. After that he entered the employe of the Lamson & Ses- sions Co., where he has been located since.


Mr. Anderson belongs to the Union Baptist church, where he is a deacon and has been Sunday school superin- tendent for the past eight years.


He is a member of Evergreen Lodge, No. 101, Masons of Ravenna, and of Eastern Star Lodge No. 84, Ravenna. He has long been interested in public affairs and in 1955 was elected as councilman at large for Kent City. He has been a trustee of the Kent Welfare Board for the past 16 years.


Dr. William B. Andrews


For many years Dr. W. B. Andrews was one of the outstanding general practitioners of Kent and surrounding area.


Dr. William Baird Andrews was born in Fallston, Pa., August 2, 1867, the son of James B. and Nancy Jane (Beaner) Andrews. His father was a veteran of the Civil War, who was seriously wounded at Antietam, and died as a result of his wounds in 1872.


Dr. Andrews was educated in the public schools of Beaver Falls, Pa., and was graduated from the Beaver Falls High School in 1884, and from Geneva College in 1887 with the degree of bachelor of science. He obtained his medical education in Cleveland where he received the degree of Doctor of medicine in 1890.

In the autumn of 1890, he came to Kent where he prac- ticed medicine for the balance of his life. In 1910, he took a postgraduate course in the New York Postgraduate Hospital Medical School.


After coming to Kent, Dr. Andrews took an active part in community affairs. He served 16 years as a member of the Kent Board of Education, two years as a member of the Portage County Board of Health, and eleven years as a mem- ber of the Kent City Board of Health of which body he was president for many years. He also served as a member of the Kent Library Board for five years.


Dr. Andrews was one of the founders of the Kent Rotary Club and served as president. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, the Knights of Pythias, the Elks, and the Twin Lakes Country Club of which he was one of the organizers. He was a member of the Portage County Medical Society, the Ohio State Medical Association and the American Medical Association. For over thirty years he was local surgeon for the Erie and Baltimore & Ohio railroads and for many years he and his family have been members of the Kent Con- gregational Church.


In 1888, Dr. Andrews was married to Carrie May Eastman of Cleveland to whom one son, Sherman Baird Andrews, was born. Sherman is a pharmacist, a World War veteran and now resides in Kent. In 1901, Dr. Andrews married Anna Gable Doyle of Erie, Pa., to whom two children were born-Dr. John Robert Andrews, now located in Bethesda, Md., and Mrs. Jane Reese who now lives in Cleveland, Ohio.


Dr. Andrews died August 28, 1940 and is buried in Standing Rock Cemetery and beside him is buried his wife who died February 22, 1954.


Donald E. Anthony


Donald Eliot Anthony was born Nov. 30, 1899, in Oak- land, Calif. He graduated from Santa Clara high school in 1918, and later secured the following college degrees: B.A. Leland Stanford University, 1922; M.A. Cornell University, 1923; Ph.D. Leland Stanford University, 1928. His fields of study were economics, sociology and history. From 1926 until the present time he has taught in the University of Nevada, Lehigh University, the University of Akron and Kent State University, coming to Kent State in 1936 and at present is head of the department of business administration there.


On June 24, 1929, he was married to Arvella M. Coffin of Reno, Nevada. His son, Donald Bruce Anthony was born August 8, 1936.


Mr. Anthony has published a number of magazine articles and is co-author of "How Collective Bargaining Works", published by the Twentieth Century Fund in 1942.


He belongs to the American Economic Association, The Industrial Relations and Research Association, The International Association of Torch Clubs, The American Arbitration, The American Association of University Professors, The Kent Kiwanis Club (past president and secretary) and the Kent Forensic Club.


He is a Democrat, a member of the Episcopal church and a lay reader in Christ Church Episcopal in Kent.

In 1955, Mr. Anthony was appointed by Mayor Manchester as director of public safety for 1956, in the city of Kent.


Richard T. Armstrong


Richard T. (Dick) Armstrong was born in Niagara Falls, New York, Feb. 21, 1869, son of Richard and Bridget (Nor- man) Armstrong.


His parents moved to Kent when he was a small boy. He attended local grade and high school. Shortly after completing school he entered the meat business at the corner of Franklin Ave. and Oak St., Kent, later taking over the grocery of his brother James and operated a combined meat and grocery store for upwards of fifty years. He retired in 1930. The Armstrong Block, with the hall upstairs, was the center of political life in the South End many years. It became known to many as "Tammany Hall." Many Democratic candidates for high offices made their first political speeches in Armstrong Hall.


Mr. Armstrong was treasurer of the village of Kent for a number of years. He was a charter member of the Kent Chamber of Commerce and of the Knights of Columbus in which he served as Grand Knight for several terms.


On Dec. 26, 1894, he was married to Margaret A. Dyer of Ravenna, daughter of Barney and Bridget Dyer. To them three children were born-Mary Agnes, now Mrs. Ira Bissler; Margaret, deceased: and John Richard, deceased.


Mr. Armstrong died June 27, 1939.


Mrs. Armstrong organized the C.D. of A. in Kent and was also active in church work and various local organizations.


Harold S. Atkinson


Harold Stephen Atkinson was born May 30, 1898, in Cameron, Monroe County, Ohio, the son of Clarence Martin and Leonora (Brown) Atkinson.


Mr. Atkinson was educated in grade schools of Steuben- ville, Ohio, and attended high school of that city. Later the family moved to Woodsfield, Ohio, where Mr. Atkinson grad- uated from Woodsfield High School. He attended college one year at Marietta College, then attended Muskingum Col- lege, at Concord, Ohio, for two years.


Mr. Atkinson served in the first world war, being sta- tioned at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After discharge from the army he moved to Akron, Ohio, where he worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, and the B. F. Goodrich Company. While in Akron he played semi-professional baseball with the Industrial League. At the same time he was a professional musician, being connected with several well known bands, in the Akron vicinity as well as on tour schedule over a period of years.

Mr. Atkinson joined the employ of the City Loan and Savings Company in Akron in 1937, and in 1938 he opened the first City Loan and Savings Company office in Kent. He served as manager of the Kent office until May, 1943, at which time he went to the Fisher Bomber Plant of Cleveland as night superintendent of production control, where the B-29 bomber was being manufactured for World War II.


Mr. Atkinson was married to Marjorie Curtiss Gooch at Lakewood, Ohio, on July 3, 1944. At that time Mr. Atkinson entered the general insurance business, which has been known as The Atkinson Agency since then.


Mr. Atkinson is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Fraternal Order of Police Associates, is a charter member of the Kent Lions Club, a member of the Kent Elks Club, and a member of the Twin Lakes Country Club.


Mr. Atkinson has assisted in many civic projects, has served on Kent City Council, and was general chairman of the Kent Sesquicentennial celebration.

Marjorie C. Atkinson


Marjorie Curtiss Atkinson was born September 9, 1905, in Kent, the daughter of Carl H. and Bessie (Copeland) Curtiss.


Mrs. Atkinson was educated in the university schools, attending grade school, graduating from University High School, and attending Kent State University. She received a degree in secretarial science from Spencerian College of Cleveland.


After finishing school she was associated in the law of- fice of her father Carl H. Curtiss. Since January 1, 1933, when her father became judge of the Court of Common Pleas, she has been in the general insurance business, which was or- iginally conducted by Judge Curtiss, in connection with his law work.


Mrs. Atkinson is a member of the First Congregational Church of Kent. She was a charter member of the Junior Woman's Club of Kent, and is a charter member of the Kent Sorosis Club, and a member of the Chi Omega Alumnae Sorority.


Mrs. Atkinson was first married August 27, 1927 to Jack H. G. Gooch, who died February 2, 1931. They had one daughter, Marjorie Dean Buhler, who resides in Kent. July 3, 1944 Mrs. Atkinson and Harold S. Atkinson were married, and since that time they have been engaged in the general insurance business known as The Atkinson Agency.


Frank W. Barber


Frank W. Barber was born in Kent, December 2, 1882, son of Charles H. and Clemen- tina Barber. He was a descendent of two of the older families of the county. His maternal grandparents, Edward and Clementina Parsons came from Massachussetts about 1830 and settled in Brimfield. His father, Charles H. Barber, came to Kent after the Civil War, having lost his left arm while in army service with a Connecticut regiment in the war. He served as postmaster in Kent for a four-year term. The names of the Parsons are on the first list of members of Christ Church, Episcopal, of Kent, where Edward was a member of the vestry and served as senior warden for thirty years.

Frank W. Barber was married to Blanche Walker, daughter of Oscar J. and Martha A. Walker, in June, 1907. The father of the bride was superintendent of the old Nicholson File Co. in Kent.


Frank's work has been mostly in bookkeeping and ac- counting. In 1912 he was appointed a clerk in the Kent postoffice and retired in 1942 after thirty years of service. Since that time he has worked in the county auditor's office, with the Lamb Electric Co. and with the Davey Compressor Co.


Mr. and Mrs. Barber are consistent members of Christ Church, Episcopal, where Mr. Barber has been a member of the vestry since he was 21 years of age; and senior warden since 1911. He is a member of the Kent Kiwanis club, the Kent Wranglers club and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. He is also trustee and treasurer of the Portage County Historical Society.


Mr. and Mrs. Barber, with Mrs. Barber's sister, Miss Mary Walker, teacher in Roosevelt high school, make their home at 319 East Summit St., Kent.


Frank H. Bauer


Frank Henry Bauer was born July 12, 1891 on Mill St., Kent, Ohio. He was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Bauer, old residents of the vicinity.


As a boy he attended St. Patricks Parochial School and later Central High.


His first job was in the grocery store of the W. L. Fox Co. on S. Water St., Kent. This was later taken over by E. J. Kline. Mr. Bauer remained and is still employed at this store, a record of over 50 years in one place. By reason of his as- sociation with the store Mr. Bauer is well known over the entire city.


In World War I he entered the army May 26, 1918 as an infantry replacement and spent six weeks at Camp Gordon, Ga. He went overseas and for nine months was in the Signal School at Longres, France. He was discharged May 22, 1919.


Mr. Bauer is a member of St. Patricks Church and Knights of Columbus and is a charter member of the Kent American Legion Post.


He makes his home at 416 East College Ave. with his sister, Mary E. Bauer.


Mr. and Mrs. Wayne F. Baumberger


Wayne F. Baumberger, son of Mrs. Winona Baumberger and the late Albert W., came to Kent in 1919. The firm of A. W. Baumberger & Son was organized in 1922 as General Contractors, doing commercial and industrial building.


Wayne Baumberger is a graduate of Kent State University in 1935 with a Bachelor of Science degree in the Liberal Arts College. He is affiliated with the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He is a charter member and past president of the Kent Junior Chamber of Com- merce, a trustee of the Kent Methodist church, World War II veteran, serving as captain in the Engineer Corps in the South Pacific.

In 1946 Mr. Baumberger mar- ried his childhood sweetheart, Frances Grant, a native of Kent. She is the daughter of Mrs. Flor- ence Wilgus Grant, a retired school teacher. She attended Kent State University, affiliating with the Alpha Phi sorority. In 1939 she graduated from the Ohio In- stitute for Medical Assistants and at this time organized the dis- pensary at the Lamb Electric Co. and was in charge there until her marriage in 1946.


Mrs. Baumberger is currently serving as a Kent director of the Red Cross, County Chairman of the Blood Program and is a Gray Mr. and Mrs. Wayne F. Baumberger Lady. She is Kent Sorosis Civic Chairman, member Central Committee Republican party, and is a Kent Methodist Sunday school teacher.


Mr. and Mrs. Baumberger have a daughter, Janet, 8, who attends University School as did both of her parents.


Frederick E. Bay


Frederick Eugene Bay was born in Cumberland, Guern- sey County, Ohio, July 25, 1912. He was the son of Fred R. and Hazel E. (Luse) Bay. He attended the Cumberland schools, and moved with his parents to Cuyahoga Falls, where his education was completed.


He then became an employe of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., remaining there until December, 1937, when he came to Kent as agent for the Prudential Insurance Co. and operated in the Kent territory for ten years. In 1947 he organized his own insurance business under the name of the Bay Insurance Service with offices at 233 South Water St., Kent. In World War II Mr. Bay entered the army in Sep- tember, 1943 and served in the States until his discharge in December, 1944.


On September 1, 1938, Mr. Bay married Katherine G. Porter, daughter of George D. and Gertrude Porter of Cuy- ahoga Falls. To them one daughter was born, Elaine Ann. Mrs. Bay died in March, 1940.


On August 24, 1941, Mr. Bay married Alethe Wood, daughter of Dr. Geo. T. and Maude (Morris) Wood of Kent.


Mr. Bay is a member of the Lions Club, B.P.O.E., and Twin Lakes Country Club.


Mrs. Bay is a concert pianist and instructor in piano. She belongs to the Kent Women's Club.

Nelson Sterling Beal


Nelson Sterling Beal was born in Kent, Ohio, March 22, 1921, son of Norman N. and Bessie Henry Beal. He secured his early education in Kent schools and Kent State High school, graduating in 1939. He then attended Kent State University for one year and State College at Starkville, Miss. for one year. He enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in February, 1943, serving in the U. S. until discharged in November, 1945. On January 29, 1943, he was married to Kathryn Mc- Culley, daughter of James H. and Harriet White McCulley of Akron, Ohio. One child was born, Steven Nelson Beal, November 28, 1951.


After he was discharged from the Air Corps he was employed by City Loan in Kent as assistant manager for one year. He then was self employed selling autos for four years. He then was employed by Harry Hopp as general manager for three years. He is presently employed by Bob Wilbur Co., Realtors.


He is a member of Rockton Lodge of Kent Number 316, Kent Chapter No. 192 R. A: M. and Yusef Khan Grotto, Akron.


Mr. and Mrs. Beal are members of Kent Congregational church.


Norman N. Beal


Norman N. Beal was born on a farm in Randolph March 3, 1882, son of George and Frances (Moatz) Beal and one of a family of 12 children. He attended district schools in Brimfield and Ravenna townships and at the age of 14 was hired by J. T. Williams of Brimfield who had a farm and also conducted a general store. For this he received $7.00 per month and board. During these years he attained a knowledge of farming and running a store as it was always open in the evenings. After the farm work was done in early spring and late fall. he attended school and was graduated from Brimfield High School in 1903.


After finishing school he worked for the Kneifel grocery for a year and a half, then for the Erie R. R. Co. checking freight cars, and as clerk and for seven months was time keeper in the Shops. He then purchased a lumber business and bob sled factory from Edward Lewis, as bob sleds were then in good demand. The factory was at the South Water St. and E. School St. corner. He also went into home building and in the following five years built 25 houses in Kent, some on order and some for sale. The homes were well constructed, in good shape today. In 1920 he sold this business and en- gaged in real estate for several years.


Mr. Beal was interested in politics and in 1925 was elected to the city council. In 1927 he was elected mayor of Kent and was again elected in 1931.


On October 20, 1910, he was married to Miss Bessie G. Henry, daughter of Mrs. George Parkinson of Kent. To them five sons were born. They are Glenwood, born Jan. 12, 1912; Gerald, Oct. 21, 1915; Earl, Feb. 15, 1919; Nelson, Mar. 22, 1921; and Wilbur, July 15, 1924.


Mr. Beal was a member of the Kent Rotary club and the Congregational Church. He died April 15, 1949. Mrs. Beal passed away May 31, 1956.

Fred Bechtle


Fred Bechtle was born August 4, 1872 at 132 S. Water St., Kent, Ohio, on the same spot where the "Bechtle Block" now stands, the son of John and Rosina F. (Kohl) Bechtle. He was one of nine children and attended the public schools in Kent. He entered the employ of F. M. Merrell in 1892, later establishing the business of news dealer. In 1920 he combined the news dealer business with men's furnishing, moving his business into the "Bechtle Block" in October 1928. He sold the news dealer business in 1928 but con- tinued to operate the men's furnishing and tobacco business at 132 S. Water St. until his death December 30, 1952.
