In 1927 he joined the B. F. Goodrich Company as As- sistant Sales Manager of the Truck Tire Division, later was made Director of Purchases for the Retail Store Division and in 1930 became Product Sales Manager of the Industrial Products Division.


In 1931 he was married to Carolin Wilhelmina Boehm of Sandusky, Ohio, and in 1935 built a home on the east shore of East Twin Lake.


In 1938 Mr. Rowe acquired a stock interest in Samuel Moore & Company of Cleveland with whom he remained for five years as Vice President and General Manager, then re- linquished this activity.


In October 1943 he founded the Hamilton Kent Manufacturing Company as a sole proprietorship and in February of 1945 incorporated the business and formed an affiliation with U. S. Stoneware Company of Tallmadge, Ohio. Like most small businesses this one had its early struggles and setbacks. It was started in Mr. Rowe's basement and in 1944 rented a small building across from the Kent Fire Station. Losses were heavy as were borrowings during the first year of incorporation but the struggling company broke even during its second year and made enough money the third year to pay off its indebtedness. In the fourth year after its incorporation it began to earn a profit which at this writing has continued to increase from year to year. In 1946 the Hamilton Kent Manufacturing Company leased the old Town Hall on Gougler Avenue for office space and in 1948 rented a small plant across the street for manufacturing space. In 1953 the company purchased the former Kent Ice Company property, rebuilt the plant and moved offices and production to this location.


Hamilton Kent Manufacturing Company manufactures extruded and molded products of rubber and soft plastic for civilian customers and the Armed Services, also a line of vibration absorbing mounts for heavy machinery. It is known the world over as the largest manufacturer of rubber sewer pipe couplings which are sold under the tradename of Tylox and Rexon.

Mr. and Mrs. Rowe are the parents of one daughter, Julie Ann, born January 10, 1940. At this writing Mr. Rowe is president and treasurer of Hamilton Kent and a director of several other corporations.


Arden S. Ruttan


Arden S. Ruttan was born May 7, 1912, at Atwood, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of George Samuel and Ida (Rozell) Ruttan. He attended home schools and graduated from Listowel High School, at Listowel, Ontario.


After finishing high school he went to Detroit and be- came an automobile salesman in that city and during World War II was a project engineer with the Continental Motors. At the close of the war he became an automobile dealer and in 1949 came to Kent where he took over the Ford agency.


Mr. Ruttan was married December 26, 1936, in Detroit to Marjorie Healey, daughter of George and Henrietta (Hill) Healey. They have four children-Barbara, Karen, Arden and Karl.


He is a member of the Masonic order, being a 32nd de- gree Mason, member of the Shrine, Tadmor Temple as well as the Kent B.P.O.E.


He is affiliated with Christ Church, Episcopal, Kent. The Ruttan home is at Twin Lakes.


John J. Salitore


John J. Salitore was born in Kent, Feb. 2, 1915, the son of Pasquale and Carmella Salitore, one of eight children.


The parents came to America from Italy in 1903. The father, then 23, had served in the army and wished to seek his fortune in a new world. He first worked in the Erie shops but, although his earnings were meager, he soon bought a home on Elm St., where all the eight children were born.


John received his education in the public schools of Kent, and on Oct. 27, 1942, entered the armed service of Uncle Sam. He served as steward of the Officers Club at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was discharged Oct. 12, 1944. He was then employed in various capacities and at present operates the Buckeye Cigaret Co., selling wholesale and operating vending machines in this area.


On Sept. 16, 1953, he was married to Elsie Long, of Akron, Ohio.


Mr. and Mrs. Rex L. Sampsell


Rexford Lee Sampsell is a native of Portage County, having been born there June 8, 1898. He was the son of Harry L. and Myrtle May (Thompson) Sampsell. He attended the

Breakneck elementary school and graduated from Central High, Kent in 1917.


After completion of schooling he entered the Kent National Bank and in 1921 was assistant cashier. In that year he purchased the Frank Johnson grocery store which he operated for a number of years, after which he returned to the Kent National Bank as assistant cashier. In 1928 he established the Kent Kelvinator Co., now do- ing business as the Sampsell Furni- ture & Electric Co., located on the East Main St. Extension.


Mr. and Mrs. Rex L. Sampsell


On September 26, 1923, Mr. Sampsell was married to Miss Thelma Marie Bissler, daughter of Samuel C. and Clara (Kehner) Bissler of Kent. Mrs. Sampsell was born in Kent, July 10, 1899. She received her elementary education at St. Patrick's School and grad- uated from Central High School in 1917. The couple have three children. They are Claire Louise


Sampsell Blank; Nancy Lee Sampsell Gordon; and Rexford Lee Sampsell, Jr.


The Sampsells are affiliated with St. Patrick's Church, Kent. Their home is at 326 North Lincoln St., Kent.


Dr. T. H. Schmidt


Dr. T. H. Schmidt was born July 2, 1893, in Celina, Ohio. After attending public school there, he entered Western Reserve University, where he graduated from Dental College in 1918. He is a member of Psi Omega Fraternity, and the Honorary Dental Fraternity of Omicron Kappa Upsilon .


He enlisted in the Medical Reserve Corps, U. S. Army, in December 1917, and was discharged in December, 1918.


On June 26, 1919, he was married to Phoebe R. Benjamin, Akron, Ohio.


Dr. Schmidt began his dental practice in Kent in July, 1921, after practicing three years in Akron. He has taken an active part in civic affairs, serving as President of the Kent Chamber of Commerce in 1924. He has contributed generously to the advancement of his profession. For five years, he was a member of the Ohio State Dental Board, serving as President in 1938-39. He has taken an active part in the affairs of the Akron Dental Society, being President in 1947-48.


Considered the father of Kent Kiwanis, he was largely responsible for its founding in 1925, and was its first Presi- dent. In 1934 he served as Lieutenant Governor of the seventh Division, Ohio Kiwanis District. He has been honored as Kent's "Mr. Kiwanis," and has maintained 100% attendance for 31 years.


Golf was Dr. Schmidt's hobby for a number of years. He was the Handicap Champion of the Northern Ohio Dental

Society in 1925, and Champion of the Summit County Dental Society in 1926. In 1929 he won the golf championship of Twin Lakes Country Club. In 1945, he set a Twin Lakes course record, having only 20 putts for 18 holes.


Dr. Schmidt is a member of Christ Church, Episcopal, having served many years as a member of the Vestry, Clerk of the Vestry, and Director of the Every Member Canvass. He was the first President of the Church Men's Club, after helping to organize it in 1930, and has served continuously as Chairman of the Ushers for the past 18 years.


He is a member of the American Legion, a 32 degree Mason, Shriner, Jester, and Ambassador of Tadmor Temple. He has been Chairman of the Crippled Children's Com- mittee of the Portage Shrine Club since its organization in 1952.


Dr. and Mrs. Schmidt live at 251 East Erie Street. Most of their summers are spent at their summer home, Creekside. They have two children, Nancy Jane and Danley Carl, and four granddaughters.


Frank E. Schmiedel


Frank E. Schmiedel was a native of Randolph where he was born June 22, 1874. He was the son of Jacob and Kathryn Schmiedel. While still a boy his family moved to Suffield where he received his first schooling, graduating from high school in 1895. He then at- tended Mount Union College and later Ohio Northern, where he received his Master of Science degree in 1902.


Mr. Schmiedel began teaching at once. After a three year superintendency of the Brimfield School, he became principal of DePeyster School in Kent. Seven years later he left the teaching profession to become a representative of the Amer- ican Book Co. In 1920 he was made employment manager of the Mason Tire and Rubber Co. in Kent.


He was married to Mary Ellen Ewell, daughter of Frank H. and Harriet Ewell on March 30, 1898. They had two sons. Ralph, the elder, owns an accountancy firm in Los Angeles, while Frank Jr. is well known locally as an excavating con- tractor. There are six grandchildren.


Mr. Schmiedel was active in Republican politics. He served Kent as mayor for one term beginning in 1920. During the Coolidge administration he was division chief of the internal revenue service in Akron. Later he was for eight years connected with the John C. Winston Publishing Co.


At the time of his death in 1940, Mr. Schmiedel was supervisor of the Portage County Aid for the Aged.


Fraternally, he was an active Mason, being a member of the Kent lodge and of Yusef Kahn Grotto of Akron.


A devout man, Mr. Schmiedel was a member of the Kent Congregational Church, where he was a deacon and a teacher in the Sunday School for many years.


Harry E. Seifert


Harry Eldridge Seifert, son of Charles G. and Cynthia (Strominger) Seifert, was born at Salem, South Dakota, May 25, 1895. He was the youngest of three children, all boys.


He started working at his brother's print shop at Spencer, South Dakota while at- tending elementary school and has continued at the printing trade his entire life, working in shops at Mitchell and Salem, South Dakota, and St. Peter, Mineapolis, Rochester and

Virginia, Minnesota. He took a course at Mergenthaler Lino- type School, Chicago, before coming to Wadsworth, Ohio to work at the Banner-Press. He came to Kent in 1926 as a compositor for the Goodline Manufacturing Company and later became owner of The Print Shop, 138 East Main Street, Kent, which he now operates.


Mr. Seifert served with Company K, 2nd Minnesota In- fantry, on the Mexican Border in 1916. During World War I, he enlisted in Company E., 25th Engineers at St. Paul, Minnesota in November 1917, was at Camp Devens, Mas- sachusetts until June, 1918, with Company C 29th Engineers, then in France until July, 1919. Discharged at Camp Grant, Illinois.


Married in 1920 to Edythe N. Kelley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alphonso Kelley of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. They are the parents of a daughter, Mrs. Muriel L. Lyons of Ra- venna; and a son, Robert Charles, who died in infancy.


Member of Kent Lodge No. 1377, B.P.O. Elks, Portage Post No. 496, American Legion, and Kent Post 3703, Veterans of Foreign Wars.


Mr. and Mrs. Gerald C. Sellman


Gerald C. Sellman was born in Hillsboro, Ohio, May 6, 1906. He was the son of Frank D. and Jessie (McNeil) Sellman. His parents moved to Kent when he was six years old. There he attended the town schools, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1924. He then attended Kent State University, graduating in 1928. He received a masters degree in chemistry in 1933 and in 1935 gained a masters degree in Education at Ohio State University.


From 1928 to 1935 he taught industrial arts at Garrettsville and was also principal at New Lon- don for a year. In the latter year he bought the Kent News Agency, handling the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Akron Times-Press, Cleve- land News and Cleveland Press. He combined this work with the Smoke Shop and operated both businesses until 1939.


In 1940 he purchased the Owl Cigar Shop at Akron, which he operated for a period of four years. In 1945 he bought Rocks Restaurant and Cigar Store in Akron as well as the Eddie Hol- den Cafe in Kent, operating it Mr. and Mrs. Gerald C. Sellman until 1948. He then bought the Karper Restaurant, selling out in 1950. In 1951 he bought an interest in the Kent Coal & Supply Co. from R. G. Smith and in 1952, in partnership with Roy Pierce, established the Sellman & Pierce Oil Co., distributors of Shell products for Portage county.


On August 28, 1928, Mr. Sellman married Cynthia Weber, daughter of John B. and Sadie (Williamson) Weber of Kent. Mrs. Sellman was a teller in the Kent City Bank from

1923 to 1948-a period of 25 years. She is also treasurer of the M. E. Church at present.


Mr. Sellman is a member of Rockton Lodge, F.&A.M. His hobbies are fishing and hunting He has fished in several states and has many displays and trophies as a result.


Emmet C. Sethman


Emmet Clyde Sethman was born in Allegheny County, Penna., on April 19, 1872. He was the son of George and Mary (Paulus) Sethman. The family came to Portage County and he received his early education in the schools of Charles- town township.


On Feb. 20, 1897, Mr. Sethman was married to Elizabeth P. Thomas. To this union two children were born-William Paul and Glenn Edwin. Mr. Sethman first followed farming and bridge construction work in the county, but later en- gaged in the lumber business. For thirty years he operated saw mills over a wide territory, disposing of the finished lumber in this and adjacent localities.


In 1924, he made his first purchase of land in Zephyr- hills, Florida, and in a business way was successful in estab- lishing a large citrus grove and packing house. For eight years previous to his death Jan. 9, 1955, he spent all his time in Florida, having built a fine home there. He is buried in Restland Cemetery, Brimfield. His wife and the two sons survive.


Jack G. Shepherd


Jack G. Shepherd was born in New Brancepeth, England, Feb. 11, 1911, being the son of Edwin Gibson and Alice (Stevenson) Shepherd. He was the youngest son of an English colliery worker and came to the United States directly to Kent, in 1921, at the age of ten.


The family arrived in Kent March 4, 1921, and on March 27 his father was killed in an accident on the Erie railroad, only three weeks after he had arrived in the United States.


He attended Central school and graduated from Roose- velt High School in 1929. At the age of 11, he went to work in the old Fisher & McGrath meat market, where he worked until 17. At the same time he worked for the late John Palfi at both the Princess and Opera House theaters, later moving to the Kent Theater until 1929. At the age of 16 he owned and operated his own advertising paper, in connection with the Kent Theater News.


In 1929 he started to work at the D. H. Green clothing store and upon the death of Mr. Green in 1940, bought into the newly organized D. H. Green, Inc. and worked up to his present position of vice president.


He married the former Leona Moon in 1934. He is a member of St. Patrick's Church; member and past director of the Kent Chamber of Com- merce, which organization he has served as Retail Division head. He is a director of the Kent Welfare Board and member and director of the Kent Kiwanis club.

His civic duties have included promoting and heading Kent's first community parking lot. He has headed welfare drives, bond drives, Red Cross drives, Heart Fund drives and other affairs.


James Norman Shepherd


James Norman Shepherd was born January 1, 1901 in Yorkshire, England. His parents were John Thomas Shepherd and Laura (Moody) Shepherd. When Norman was 11 years old the family moved to the United States, taking up residence in Buchtel, Ohio were Norman graduated from High School in 1918. He was employed in the coal mines there until February 1919 when he and brother, Joseph, came to Kent, Ohio. He worked at the Erie Railroad as machinist and elec- trician apprentice until 1921 when he entered Ohio State University, graduating with the class of 1926 with a Bachelor Science in Education degree. From 1926 to 1928 he was principal of schools at New Washington, Ohio.


In 1932 Mr. Shepherd returned to Kent and was em- ployed in real estate and insurance by the firm of F. B. Bryant. From 1935 until 1939 he was personnel director for the Black & Decker Electric Co., leaving that employment to become Director of the Ohio State Employment Service for Portage County. During World War II he was designated War Manpower Director and Chairman of the War Man- power Committee for all war industry in Portage County.


Mr. Shepherd was married June 14, 1926 to Vivian Poulton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin B. Poulton, of Kent. To them were born three daughters, Barbara, Bette, and Bon- nie, now Mrs. Robert Meeker of Kent, Mrs. William B. Pounds of Washington, D. C., and Mrs. Larry Garrett of Kent.


Mr. Shepherd is a member of the Methodist Church and was a charter member of Kent Lions Club.


Guy M. Showalter


Guy M. Showalter was born April 21, 1908, at Meyers- dale, Somerset County, Penna., the son of Edgar Eugene and Lizzie Catherine (Walter) Showalter. The father was a native of Mt. Sidney, Virginia, and the mother was born in Somerset, Penna.


The family came to Ohio and Mr. Showalter was educat- ed in the public schools of Akron, Ohio State University and Ohio Northern Law School. He was admitted to the Ohio State Bar in 1939.


He entered the general practice of law in Kent in 1939 where he continues practice at this time. He is a member of the Portage County Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar As- sociation and the American Bar Association.


Mr. Showalter is a charter member of the Kent Lion's club and has been prominent in its activities.


Mr. Showalter was married May 11, 1940 to Miss Bernice A. Ostrander. Currently, their home is at Cuyahoga Falls.

Alex Simon


Alex Simon was born in Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada, December 19, 1916, son of Dave and Rose (Berzon) Simon. While still a babe the family removed to Akron, Ohio. There he received his education in grade and high school. He then went to work, being driver of a bakery truck, a welder and abstract clerk.


On March 16, 1940, he was married to Bella Cohen of Akron. They have three children-Donna Frances, Steven J. and Ross B. Simon.


On Jan. 1, 1943, Mr. Simon joined the U. S. navy at Sampson, N. Y. After training, he went overseas with the amphibious forces on May 27, 1943. He participated in various operations in the European theater of war with honors, among which was a letter of commendation from Admiral Stark.


He is a member of the Kent Chamber of Commerce, the Kent Lions club, the Fraternal Order of Police, is a Thirty-second degree Mason and is a Shriner.


For the past ten years he has been associated in an executive capacity with the Kent Salvage Company of Kent.


Dave Simon


Dave Simon was born May 12, 1895, in Latvia, Europe, the son of Ely and Sonia (Kirk) Simons. The family came to Canada when Dave was a boy, settling in Elmwood, Manitoba. His education was received in the Elmwood elementary and high school.


In 1913, he came to Akron, Ohio, and started work at the B. F. Goodrich Co. plant. From 1918 to 1924, he worked for the Acme and A. & P. food stores, after which he went into the scrap iron and metal business and has been in it since. He came to Kent in 1939, with an establishment at 300 Stow St. In 1948, he moved to his present location at 501 Dodge St., where a most modern scrap yard and warehouse were built, with latest loading and handling equipment and R.R. siding.


He married Rose Berzon July 25, 1915 in Winnipeg. After her death in 1947 he married again, this time to Rose Rich of Akron, July 1, 1949. He was naturalized in 1922 in Akron.


In World War II he was connected with the national defense program and received various national, state and local citations for bond sales work. He is a member of Beth El congregation in Akron, where he is a member of the board of trustees. Fraternally, he is a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He also belongs to the Kent Chamber of Commerce, the Kent Lion's club and Fraternal Order of Police.


Mr. Simon is a member of the Northern Ohio Institute of Scrap Iron & Steel, Inc. and is now a member of the National Board of Public Relations. He was vice president two years and four years a board member.


Among his honors was a distinguished service award for selling four million dollars worth of war bonds single handed. He has two children, Alex and Gussie Sussman.

Rev. Allen Simpson


The Rev. Allen Matthew Simpson was born January 16, 1918 in Ottumwa, Iowa being the son of William and Elsie (Chancellor) Simpson. He is the oldest of nine children.


Father Simpson received his elementary education at the Lovilia public school in Lovilia, Iowa. His high school was pursued at St. Augustine Seminary, Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. He took his college training at St. John's University, Collegeville, Minnesota and Trinity College, Sioux City, Iowa. His theological studies were taken at Conception Seminary, Conception, Missouri.


Father Simpson was ordained to the priesthood February 2, 1948, at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown, Ohio by Bishop James A. McFadden. His first assignment was assistant pastor at St. Patrick's Church, Kent, Ohio where he is still stationed.


He is a member of the Kent council of Knights of Columbus and the Akron assembly of the fourth degree of the Knights of Columbus. Likewise Father Simpson is a member of the Kent Welfare board. He is the first chaplain of the Kent Optimists. At the St. Patrick's Church he is the moderator of the Infant Jesus of Prague. With the youth, he is the chaplain of all the Catholic Boy Scouts in Portage county, that is, chaplain of the St. Patrick's troop and the chaplain of the Portage Catholic deanery.


John B. Simpson


John Bartshe Simpson was born in Kent on July 11, 1914, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Roy Simpson, both natives of Kent. He attended Kent public schools, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1932, and from Kent State University in 1937.


Upon graduation from Kent State he went to work for the National Broadcasting Co. in New York City as a page and guide. In 1940 he joined the NBC announcing staff in New York, and held a position on this staff until 1948 when he returned to live in Kent and work for Akron Radio Station WADC.


Two years later he joined the Fred Bock Advertising Agency also in Akron. In February, 1955, he joined the New York Stock Exchange firm of Paine, Webber, Jackson & Curtis, as a registered representative.


Mr. Simpson has been interested in civic affairs, having served as President of Kent City Council for two terms and as a member of Kent Charter Commission in 1954.


He is the third generation of the Simpson family to serve as Master of Rockton Lodge, F. & A. M. He is also a member of Kent Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, and an Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Cleveland, (32nd Degree).


Mr. Simpson served 2-1/2 years in the U. S. Army during World War II, service including eighteen months in France and Germany.


In 1941, he married Dorothy J. Best, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard J. Best of Queens Village, Long Island, New York. They have two sons, John B. "Jack" Simpson Jr., and William Roy Simpson II.


Mr. and Mrs. Simpson and their sons attend Christ Episcopal Church.

William Roy Simpson


William Roy Simpson was born in Kent on September 26, 1884. He was the son of John and Margaret (Campbell) Simpson, both of whom came from Montreal, Canada.


Mr. Simpson attended Kent Public Schools. At an early age he became interested in railroad work, first as a clerk at the Erie Shops, later at the B. & O. and for nearly fifty years the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad (now the Nickel Plate). In 1909 he became agent, the position he held until his death on January 4, 1954.


He was married on August 12, 1911 to Lucia Bartshe, a native of Kent.


Mr. Simpson was a lifelong member and active worker in the Kent Methodist Church, serving for many years as Secre- tary of the Official Board of the Church. He was Financial Secretary from 1939 to the time of his death.


Active in many Kent and area Masonic orders, he was a Past Master of Rockton Lodge, F. and A. M., Past High Priest of Kent Chapter, R. A. M. He was also a member of Akron Council, Akron Commandery Knights Templar, and a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Cleveland.


Mr. Simpson was especially proud of his 28 years of perfect attendance as a member of the Kent Rotary Club.


Mr. and Mrs. Simpson were the parents of one son, John Bartshe Simpson.

Alexander M. Smith was born October 28, 1910, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the son of Roy H. and Jessie D. M. Smith.


He was educated in the Kent schools, Cleveland University School and Yale University, from which he was graduated in 1932 with a B.S. degree. He later entered Case Institute of Technology from which he received an M.S. degree in 1939.
