Stevenson of Jacksonville, Alabama. Mr. Stevenson joined the P. L. Frank Lumber Co. in 1930, and became president of it in 1951. Eva Frank died April 2, 1922.


In 1926, Mr. Frank married Freda Gillett, with whom he spent twenty-five happy years.


Mr. Frank was greatly interested in traveling. He had been in most of the states of the Union and had visited Canada, Mexico, Panama, Europe, and Africa. He spent the winters of his last twenty years in St. Petersburg, Fla. where he died Jan. 24, 1951.


Mr. Frank was a member of Unity Lodge No. 12, F. and A. M .; Ravenna Chapter No. 46 Order of Eastern Stars; the Modern Woodmen of America; and the Kiwanis Club. He was an active member and generous supporter of the First Congregational Church of Ra- venna, and was a Deacon Emeritus at the time of his death.


Glenn C. Fowler


Glenn Cornelius Fowler, Pharmacist, Ravenna, Ohio, is the son of Cornelius B. and Hannah (Missner) Fowler, and the grandson of Benjamin Fowler, who migrated to Ohio in 1829 from Pennsylvania.


The Fowler family are descended from three brothers who emigrated from England before the Revolutionary War; Nathan settling in New York, Elithan settling in Connecticut, and David, of whom Glenn C. is great-great grandson, settling in Pennsylvania.


Glenn C. was born July 4, 1893 in Garrettsville, Ohio. He graduated from Garrettsville High School in 1912 and from Ohio State University School of Pharmacy in 1914.


He married Helen F. Kraft, daughter of Charles G. and Mary Bachtel Kraft, of Akron, Ohio in 1917 and they have one son, Jack Kenneth.


With the exception of some 10 years, he has spent his entire career of Pharmacy in Portage County and now oper- ates the Fowler Drug Co. in Ravenna, Ohio.


In 1918 he was associated with the Universal Drug as Purchasing Agent and operated 11 stores in the Akron area. In 1921 he opened his own store in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, selling in 1936. In 1928 he purchased the Woodhouse and Naftel Store in Ravenna which he still operates as the Fowler Drug Co. In 1929 he purchased the Fred Trory store in Kent, selling in 1934.


He and his wife now reside at Silver Lake Village, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He is af- filiated with the Chamber of Commerce, Masonic Lodge-32nd Degree and Congregational Church of Silver Lake.


Jack Kenneth Fowler


Jack Kenneth Fowler, Pharmacist, is the son of Glenn C. and Helen (Kraft) Fowler, born November 7, 1919, in Akron, Ohio.


He was graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1937, Kent State University (B. S. in Chem.) in 1941, and from Western Reserve University School of Pharmacy in

1949. He then spent a year in 1941 at Picitanny Arsenal in New Jersey and the following five years at Ravenna Arsenal as Technical Assistant in the Inspection Dept., becoming as- sociated with his father, Glenn C., in the Fowler Drug Co., Ravenna, Ohio, in 1945.


Mr. Fowler married Olive Wright in 1942, at which time they established residence in Ravenna. Mrs. Fowler is the daughter of Karl T. and Flora (Green) Wright of Cuyahoga Falls and Bluffton, Ohio.


Mr. Fowler is affiliated with Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge-32nd Degree, and Rho Chi-National Honorary Pharmacy Fraternity.


He represents the seventh generation of Fowlers, from the original emigration to America from England, and is the fourth generation to make his livelihood in Portage County.


Elizabeth Haymaker Gigger


Elizabeth Olin Haymaker, the daughter of William J. and Mary (Olin) Haymaker, was born August 2, 1886, in Franklin Township, Portage County, Ohio. She attended Streets- boro district schools and was graduated from Ravenna high school in 1904, with honors.


Her father bought and remodeled the Babcock home on North Chestnut St., Ravenna, where the family lived until after his death.


She was graduated from Womens College (now Flora Stone Mather College) of Western Reserve University, Cleve- land, in 1908, after which she taught school in Kent and Al- liance high schools.


She aided greatly in establishing the Portage County chapter of the Red Cross and served as its executive secre- tary from its founding in 1917 until 1927, and was chairman of Home Service when she died.


Miss Haymaker was prominent as a civic leader, serving as president of the Ravenna Women's Club; Junior Tuesday Club; Ravenna Garden Club; D.A.R .; Business and Profes- sional Women's Club; and was a Rotary Ann. For three terms she was President of the Ohio State Federation of Women's Clubs and was State Chairman of the Cancer Control organ- ization. She was Chairman of the County Child Welfare Board and also Representative of Consumers Tax League


Elizabeth was elected County Treasurer and served two terms, later serving as Supt. of the Portage Cour.ty Hospital. She was an active member of the Ravenna Congregational Church.


On Sept. 1, 1939, she was married to J. C. Gigger of Kent. She died Feb. 20, 1944, at her winter home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.


She left her home in Ravenna to the Junior Tuesday Club to be used as a club home.


Clarence Edgar Greene


Clarence Edgar (Ed) Greene was born in Rootstown, Ohio, June 7, 1882, son of George W. and Sarah Berlin Greene, moving to Ravenna in 1883. The father came in 1855, at the

age of 23, from his birthplace on Nantucket Island to join the settlement of sea captains in Rootstown. Ed attended school in Ravenna, leaving the High School in 1898 to work in the F. P. Chapman Shoe Store. In 1911, after the Empire Block, including the shoe store and five other stores, burned to the ground, he entered into partnership with Mr. Chapman in the shoe business. In 1922 the firm became Greene and Kertscher, with Albert H. Kertscher as partner, and at his death in 1932, his son, Richard H. Kertscher became the Junior Partner.


Mr. Greene was married in 1911 to Gladys Martha Mer- rill of Twin Lakes, formerly of Ravenna, daughter of Frank A. and Ida Haymaker Merrill. They have three children, Eleanor Margaret White, teacher of Latin and English in the Van Wert, Ohio, High School; George Merrill Greene, in the Loan Department of The First Savings Bank and Trust Com- pany; and David Edgar Greene, Mayor of Ravenna, and an Associate with Jack Kohl in the Real Estate business. They have eight grandsons and one granddaughter.


For nearly sixty years Mr. Greene has been in the retail shoe business in Ravenna dur- ing which time he also spent more than forty years as Traveling Factory Representative for the B. F. Goodrich Rubber Company, Footwear Department, and the Weyenberg Shoe Man- ufacturing Company of Milwaukee.


Mr. Greene joined The First Congregational Church in 1894, in which he has served as Trustee, Deacon for twenty-four years, and in many other capacities, taking a substantial part in its building program. He has been a Director of The First Savings Bank and Trust Company of Ravenna since its re-organization in 1922. He was a charter member of Ra- venna Kiwanis, is a member of Unity Lodge No. 12, F. and A. M. and Tyrian Chapter, a member of the Knights of Pythias, and in the twenties, served on the Board of Education. He retired from traveling in 1953. Mr. and Mrs. Greene bought the Merrill home at Twin Lakes in 1953, which they remodelled and where they are now living.


Lee L. Havre


Lee L. Havre, Sr., was born in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, March 27, 1897, son of Edward and Lottie Havre. When he was quite young his parents moved to Cleveland where he attended school. In 1910 the family moved to Akron, where his schooling was continued, including two years in West High School. He then attended Stanton Military Academy for one and a half years, when he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps in 1917, serving until April, 1919. He was a drill in- structor at Paris Island. After his military service he went with the U. S. Emergency Fleet Corporation at Savannah, Ga., remaining six months.


He then returned to Akron, selling real estate for a year, after which he went into the painting contracting business with J. B. Gunder, remaining two years.


In 1925 Mr. Havre entered the automobile business with the Beynon Chevrolet Agency in Kenmore, remaining until 1927, when he came to Ravenna and bought the Westfall

Chevrolet Agency, conducting it since that time. In 1947 the business was incorporated and his son, Lee Havre, Jr., entered the business, serving as secretary and treasurer.


On Oct. 30, 1922, Mr. Havre married Miss Fayne Naomi Abbot of Canton. Two chil- dren were born to them-Lee L., Jr .; and Caroline, now Mrs. W. A. Shilling of Ravenna.


Mr. Havre is a member of the American Legion, B.P.O.E. and the Twin Lakes Country Club. Both Mr. and Mrs. Havre are members of the Ravenna M. E. church. They now spend about seven months each year at Orlando, Fla.


Mr. Havre has been a Chevrolet dealer for 32 years-29 years in Ravenna and three in Kenmore.


Lee L. Havre, Jr.


Lee L. Havre, Jr., was born in Akron, Sept. 10, 1923, son of Lee L. and Fayne N. (Abbott) Havre.


When he was four years of age his parents moved to Ravenna, where he received his education, graduating from high school there in June 1941. He then attended Ohio Wesleyan University for two years. In February, 1943, he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps, serving with the Fifth Division in the Pacific Area and taking part in several major engagements, including Iwo Jima. He received his discharge in January, 1946.


On his return home he entered business with his father, Lee Havre, Sr., in the Chevrolet Agency at Ravenna. The business was later incorporated and he is now the secretary and treasurer.


On March 29, 1947, Mr. Havre was married to Nancy Lee Quillen, daughter of Jack and Edna Quillen of Ravenna. Three children were born. They are Pamela Abbott, Lee L. III, and Debra.


He is a member of the B.P.O.E., Kiwanis Club, Moose, Portage County Auto Dealers Association, serving as president for a time; and of the Twin Lakes Country Club.


Both Mr. and Mrs. Havre are members of the Ravenna M. E. Church.


Ralph A. Hinman


Ralph Ansel Hinman was born in Ravenna township on what was later known as Harlan Dale Farms, April 23, 1899. This home was built in 1817 and for about 15 years was operated as the Farmers Inn, since it was located on an important road to Lake Erie. He was the son of Harlan and Myrtie (Judd) Hinman. His great grandfather Reed came from Connecticut by ox-cart in 1832. His grandfather, Ansel Mather Hinman was a native of Atwater, and married Helen Reed. His mother was a Streetsboro native.


Mr. Hinman attended township district school and was graduated from Raveena Town- ship high school in 1919. He graduated from the O.S.U. College of Agriculture in 1923. He then became active with his father in operating his farm. He operated a retail milk business in Ravenna for 25 years, producing and distributing Jersey milk.


Mr. Hinman married Ruth L. Jones, daughter of W. R. and Grace Jones of Ravenna.

To them was born a son, Robert Mather Hinman, who is a senior at Hiram College; and a daughter, Betty, who is a junior at Ohio State University. Mrs. Hinman died in 1952.


Mr. Hinman is a member of the Ravenna Congregational church where he, his father, Harlan, and grandfather, Ansel, had served as deacons. He has been a member of the Ra- venna Kiwanis club 30 years, serving as president in 1952. He also served on the township school board, being its presi- dent in 1949-50. He is now president of the Portage County Trustees and Clerks Association and is a Ravenna township trustee, a member of the executive board on the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission and President of the Western Reserve Farm Loan Association.


Theodore E. Hoefler


Theodore E. Hoefler, of German-Irish descent, was born Jan. 26, 1889, in Ravenna. He was the son of Abraham and Mary (Harrington) W. Hoefler. His father was a native of Leipsic, Germany.


Theodore, 1907 graduate of Ravenna high school, in his senior year began office work for the Penna. R.R. Co. and thereafter was continuously employed by this company through 46 years when death intervened.


Mr. Hoefler married Hazel Youmpman, daughter of Allen J. and Eva Baldwin Yoump- man, Oct. 17, 1914. She died in 1919, leaving husband and little son, Ervin Allen.


He served as chief clerk to the freight agents of Cleveland and Akron until January, 1943. In the meantime he had married Mazie B. Fosnight, daughter of George H. and Hattie M. (Likens) Fosnight of Ravenna, July 8, 1924.


After his appointment as freight and passenger agent at Mt. Vernon, Ohio, in January, 1943, the Hoeflers lived in that city eight years where Mr. Hoefler was active in church and civic affairs. He received the Ravenna agency in No- vember, 1951, and took up residence there.


Mr. Hoefler was a member of the First Christian Church; was Boy Scout Area officer; member of Unity Lodge No. 12, F.&A.M .; Akron Council, No. 80, R. and S .; the B. of R. C. and O.R.T., railroad organizations.


In July, 1953, after attending the International Con- vention of the Disciples of Christ, Mr. and Mrs. Hoefler traveled north. Stricken with a heart attack at Vancouver, B.C., the end came four days later on July 16, at Vancouver Memorial Hospital.


Theodore Hoefler was a man of integrity. He loved his home, church, God, work and friends - and he spent his life working for the things he loved.


Martha M. Hosfelt


Martha Marie Hosfelt, born in Coshocton County, Ohio, the daughter of Martin K. and Ethel (Carnes) Hosfelt, is one of three daughters.

She received her education in the grade schools of Guernsey County, Brown High School of Cambridge, and when the family moved to Ravenna in 1927, she entered Ravenna High School from which she was graduated in 1930. Active in school activities, she was a member of Ravenna's first state championship debating team.


After receiving a junior secretarial certificate from Actual Business College of Akron, she entered public service, and in 1934 was appointed clerk in the office of county auditor; and in 1941, secretary to the county engineer, a position she holds at this writing.


In an effort to further her education, she has been at- tending evening classes at the University of Akron, where she is a member of Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national scholastic honorary society.


Actively engaged in politics from the time she cast her first ballot, Miss Hosfelt has long been a member of the Federated Democratic Women of Portage County, has served as a precinct committeeman and member of the Democratic State Executive Committee, and is a past president and honorary life member of the Federated Democratic Women of Ohio.


She is a past president of the Ravenna City Federation of Women's Clubs and the Ravenna Business and Professional Women's Club. She is also affiliated with the Portage County Historical Society and the Tappan Tree Chapter of the Na- tional Secretaries Association. She is a member of the First Christian Church of Ravenna, and her favorite charity is the Cleveland Christian Home for children.


Leon S. Hubbell


Leon Sterling Hubbell was born in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, August 13, 1877, being the son of Charles Harold and Miriam (Russell) Hubbell. The ancestors of both parents were natives of Connecticut.


The son of the owner-manager of the telephone company in Chagrin Falls, Mr. Hub- bell started his career in this business when he was eighteen years old. His forty-seven year telephone career included fifteen years as manager of the Ravenna-Kent-Mantua exchanges.


Mr. Hubbell was married September 20, 1900 to Susan Elvira Dean, the daughter of Orlin Smith and Margaret Jane (Godfrey) Dean, at her home in Parma, Michigan. The family moved from Chagrin Falls to Ravenna in 1919.


An enthusiastic Boy Scout leader, he held every rank in the movement. He was Scout Master at Chagrin Falls; chair- man of the Court of Honor; Commissioner of the District Area; and a member of the Scout Executive Committee.


Continuously active in community affairs, he was past president of the Ravenna Chamber of Commerce, the Kiwanis Club and the Community Chest. He founded the Ravenna Round Table and became its president. He was Past Master of Golden Gate Lodge, F.&A.M., and a life member of the Tele- phone Pioneers of America. He was a member of the Con- gregational Church.


After his retirement in 1942, Mr. Hubbell devoted himself to improving his country home, "Hubbell Hill," near Sandy Lake, where he took pleasure in entertaining his friends.

He remained active in civic enterprises, serving as chairman of the bond drives and giving freely of his time whenever he saw need. He was serving as secretary of the Kiwanis club at the time of his death, which occured October 4, 1948.


Mr. and Mrs. Hubbell were the parents of two children: Margaret Hubbell Huntzinger of Ravenna and Dean Sterling Hubbell of the Mellon Institute in Pittsburgh.


Thomas J. Hunston


Thomas J. Hunston was born in East Palestine, Ohio, July 20, 1907. He was the son of Thomas, Sr. and Matilda Hunston, of English ancestry.


Mr. Hunston attended the public schools in East Palestine, Ohio and graduated from the high school there in 1925. In 1926 he moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and entered Adelbert College of Western Reserve University. He was graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1930. He later attended the University of Chicago for special training in hospital administration.


Upon his graduation from college in 1930 he entered hospital work at City Hospital in Cleveland. His first job was in the business office but within a few years he was holding administrative positions in this hospital which at the time was one of the largest general hospitals in the country.


In 1942, because of his years of experience in hospital administration, Mr. Hunston was given a commission in the United States Army as a First Lieutenant and assigned to O'Reilly General Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. He served as adjutant and/or Executive Officer of this large 4,400 bed army hospital until the end of World War II and was re- leased from the army in 1946 with the rank of Major.


He was appointed administrator of Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna upon his release from the Army in 1946 and has been active in in- creasing the facilities and services at the hospital. As of this writing he has been adminis- trator of the County hospital for over ten years.


Mr. Hunston was married to Eva Batman from Cleveland in 1942 and they had one child, Donald L. Hunston, born in 1943.


Mr. Hunston is a member of the American Hospital Association, Ohio Hospital As- sociation and a Fellow of the American College of Hospital Administrators for many years.


Merrible Myers Irmiter


Merrible Myers Irmiter (Mrs. Frank P.), R. D. 1, Ravenna, Ohio was born at 161 North Pospect Street, Ravenna, Ohio, June 13, 1897, daughter of Fred O. and Lora Ida (Smalley) Myers. She has a brother, Charles D. Myers, single, living in Ravenna. The mother, who passed on Jan. 1, 1930 was the oldest daughter of Frank O. and Laura Hurlbut Smalley, both deceased, of Freedom Township, and whose Smalley ancestors came from Berlin, Vermont and Hurlbut ancestors from Weathersfield, Conn. The father, who is 79 years of age, lives on Lincoln Ave., Ravenna. He was the son of Frederick and Mary P. Reed Myers, late of Ravenna.


Mrs. Irmiter attended Ravenna City Schools, Class of 1917, and was graduated from Actual Business College, Akron in 1918 in secretarial work. Her first position was with Attorney W. J. Beckley of Ravenna; was Chief Deputy Recorder of Portage County for over 10 years and on May 1, 1939 was hired as a secretary with the Ohio Department of High- ways, Div. 4, Ravenna where she is presently employed. 1954 to Frank P. Irmiter, Ravenna, O., R. D. 1, a civil engineer with the State Highway Department.


Mrs. Irmiter is a charter member of Ravenna Dames of Malta No. 233; Past Protector; Organizer, and first President of Ravenna Malta Protectors' Club; Member of Akron Pro- tectors' Club; member of Mayflower Descendents in Ohio- Akron Chapter, through Steven Hopkins' line-a Mayflower Pilgrim and singer of the Compact; Beebe Rebekah Lodge No. 405; the present Regent of Old Northwest Chapter D. A. R .; Charter Member, a present Ttrustee, and Membership Chairman of Portage County Historical Society; a past presi- dent of Portage County Chapter Ohio Civil Service Employees' Association; member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Ravenna, Ohio, and several other groups. Mrs. Irmiter has many hobbies such as collecting old covered bridge pictures, genealogy, music, local history, scrap books, keeps house, and enjoys travel. She has been a notary public for many years.


James E. Jensen


James Edwin Jensen was born in Minneapolis, Minn., Jan. 13, 1884. He was the son of James and Julia T. (Tennyson) Jensen, both of whom were born in Norway and came to America at an early age.


He attended the local schools at home and graduated from South High school, Minne- apolis in 1901. He then entered the University of Minnesota where he remained for three years. There he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fra- ternity.


In 1904 he went into the retail lumber business and for 22 years was president of the Twin City Lumber Dealers Assn.


In the fall of 1917 he entered the army, attending the officers training school at Louisville. He was discharged in May, 1918.


In 1917 he was married to Miss Zora Henderson who died in 1923. On Sept. 8, 1925, he married Anna M. Grafel- man of Omaha, Neb. They have one son, James T., born Dec. 20, 1928. He is now with Arthur D. Little & Co. of Cam- bridge, Mass.


In 1925 Mr. Jensen sold his lumber business and came to Ravenna the next year, purchasing an interest in the Sta- Warm Co., which was moved to the city. He was active in the management of the business until 1956 when he sold his in- terests and retired.


Mr. Jensen particularly enjoys travel. He has made several trips to Europe and has been in every state of the Union. He is a member of the Masonic Scottish Rite order and the Shrine. He is a former president of the Ravenna Kiwanis club. He has been president of the Community Chest, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and has been on the board of directors of the Second National Bank since 1939.


He is a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientists, of Ravenna.

Benjamin F. Jones


Benjamin F. Jones was born September 28, 1884, at North Lawrence, Ohio. He was the son of Benjamin E. and Harriet (Bellers) Jones. The father was a native of Wales and the mother was born in Herefordshire, England, later coming to this country.


Mr. Jones secured his education in the local schools, finishing grade school there. He then worked in the coal mines two years, after which he managed a co-operative grocery store for a period of three years. He then took an engineering course in structural engineering from the International Cor- respondence School of Scranton, Pa., and went to Beaver Falls, Pa., where he learned the steel business, working for the Penn Bridge Co. for five years.


Following this was a four-year period of service for the Alliance Structural Co. at Alliance. In 1919 he came to Ra- venna where with three brothers they formed the Jones Brothers Structural Steel Co., fabricators and engineers. Here Mr. Jones became secretary-treasurer. His principal job was engineering. Customers of this company have been located both in this country and abroad.


On Dec. 25, 1906, Mr. Jones was married to Miss Lu- cretia Baker of North Lawrence, Ohio, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Baker. To them two sons were born-Laverne Lloyd and Merle Kenneth, both now of Ravenna. Mrs. Jones died March 11, 1927. On July 10, 1931, Mr. Jones married Nancy May Brammel of Maysville, Kentucky, daughter of Elwood and Amelia Brammel. Both Mr. and Mrs. Jones have a long time hobby of ice skating, which both greatly enjoy at the present time. They are also interested in dancing, swimming and other out- door sports.


Bryan F. Jones


Bryan Frank Jones, son of Charles F. and Jennie C. (Lamphere) Jones, was born in Brimfield Township Township, Portage County, June 10, 1896.


He attended district schools until the age of 12, after which he was employed for three years by William Shanafelt, whose farm is now part of Kent City.


He was then employed by the Portage County Improvement Association in caring for horses brought in for improving stock of the county.


Following service in the Army, he attended the Jones School of Auctioneering in Chicago, graduating in 1919. He was then associated with the Universial Realty Company of Akron as auctioneer and salesman.


In 1921, he founded the Bryan F. Jones Agency which he continued to operate until 1929, at which time he became a field representative of the Union Joint Stock Land Bank of Detroit, traveling extensively over Ohio and Pennsylvania. During the bank crisis he worked temporarily out of the Federal Land Bank of Louisville, Kentucky.
