174. Anna Johanna Seidel, m.n. Piesch. xi, n. I. April II. Born in Berthels- dorf, Jan. 12, 1726, where her parents, who had come from Moravia the previous autumn, were living temporarily. After the death of her mother, when she was six years old, she entered the orphans' house in Herrnhut. In 1738, together with other children, she went to Berlin and thence to Marienborn, where she was received into the congregation, and later became an acolyte. In 1740 moved, with the scholars of the girls' school, to Herrn- haag. In 1741 became superintendent of the children. In 1745 became " laboress of the single sisters " in Herrnhaag and in 1747 general laboress or elder of all the classes of unmarried sisters. During the following years she was principally in the " Jüngerhaus," and in 1752 went on a visit to America. On Oct. 30, 1760, married Brother Nathaniel Seidel and went to America. She faithfully assisted her husband in his duties, and with him, a member of the Provincial Board, visited the congregations. She also attended the Synod at Marienborn in 1769, with her husband. After his death, May 17th, 1782, she left Bethlehem, where she had resided during more than twenty years, removing to Nazareth, where she served as the "laboress" or spiritual superintendent of the Widows. "She had received from the Lord extraordinary gifts, being both possessed of superior intellectual power and also of executive ability. The attention of Count Zinzendorf was drawn to her already in her childhood, and, at an early age, important duties were en- trusted to her. Her services, both in European congregations and in those in this country, were appreciated, and she was held in loving remembrance and highly esteemed."
175. Mary. vii, n. 9. Aug. 8. A negro, the wife of Peter. Born in Guinea, in 1736, belonging to the Mandango nation. In 1762 she was seized by a ship captain, taken to America and sold. In 1763 married Peter. In 1775 was employed in the family of Brother Henry Van Vleck, Sr. She was led to Christ, and in 1780 was baptized in Bethlehem. Bro. Van Vleck having effected the freedom of her and her husband, they moved to Old Nazareth in 1784. At first she longed to return to Guinea, where she had been the

daughter of the chief of the Mandango nation and was well cared for ; but later she recognized the wonderful leading of the Lord, with gratitude.

In 1733 married Rudolph Christ. 1750, came with her six children to Pennsylvania, living in Bethlehem, uniting with that congre- gation. They resided in Friedensthal, Bethlehem and Gnadenthal. After the death of her husband, she lived, for some time, in the Bethlehem Widows' House, and since 1772 at Nazareth, with her son Jacob. " Her joy was in the Lord, by whose blood she had been redeemed."

Her parents having died while she was very young, she went to Herrnhaag, having been awakened by the Brethren, and was received into the congregation. After his death, in her thirteenth year, she came to Ebersdorf, where she united with the congregation. In 1749 to Herrnhaag and thence, with others, to Penn- sylvania. In 1754 married Brother Philip Christoph Bader, and with him served in many congregations.

Married Thomas Archdall, in Philadelphia, April 12, 1750. He died twenty months later. Two years later, married Francis Robinson, who died in 1757. In 1763 married George Kemble, a widower, with six children. He died in 1774. By her second marriage she had two children ; a daughter survived her, Elizabeth, who married Jacob Weiss.

In 1761, he was ordained a deacon of the Church, in Herrnhut. Served as minister in Ireland, and since 1787 in this country, at Gnadenhütten on the Mahony. On account of impaired health, retired in 1796, and moved to Bethlehem, and later to Nazareth. At Cootehill, Ireland, he married Sarah Martin, Nov. 20, 1769. He had one son, who died in Kilwarlin, Ireland.

283. John Michael Kern. xiv, s. 2. May 15. Born in Ebersdorf, Upper Lusatia, June 5, 1750. He married Anna Maria Stoll, in Nazareth, Jan. 17, 1781. He had seven children, of whom three survived: John Christian, Anna Johanna and Andrew Gottfried.

285. John Jacob Schmick. xii, s. 16. Oct. 2. Born in Bethlehem, Oct. 2, 1757. Married, in Bethlehem, Feb. 9, 1785, to Anna Johanna Krause. One daughter, Sarah, was married to John S. Haman, of Nazareth.
286. Catharine Miksch, m.n. Busch, xi, n. 7. Dec. 27. Born Aug. 14, 1762, in York, Pa. Married Paul Miksch, in Christianspring, March 6, 1796. One son, John Matthew, survived, who became a prominent citizen of Bethlehem.

287. Maria Agnes Roth, m.n. Pfingstag. xi, n. 8. Feb. 25. Born April 4, 1785, in Würtemberg. She came to America in 1737, with her parents, John Michael and Rosina (Ketschle) Pfingstag. Married the Rev. John Roth and served in the Indian missions in western Pennsylvania and Ohio, and later in the pastorates of various Brethren's congregations. Her husband died at York, Pa., on July 19, 1790. Their children were : John, the first white child born in Ohio; John Lewis, John David and John Benjamin. Descendants are prominent laborers in the Lutheran Church.
288. Juliana Mueller. i, n. I. March 23. An unmarried sister. Born in Nazareth, July 27, 1752. Her father was John Bernhard Mueller, who died in Bethlehem, in 1754.
289. John Jacob Christ. xii, s. 17. April 2. Born in Lauffen, Würtemberg, Oct. 7, 1740. Came to America, in 1750, with his parents, Rudolph and Anna (Wolfer). Christ. Married, Oct. 25, 1771, Christina Fredericka Schlosser, in Bethlehem. He was a hatter for many years. He had six children, of whom the following survived : Jacobina Fredericka (born Sept. 29, 1772), married to Henry Christian Mueller, a hatter; Christiana (Jan. 19, 1775), married to Joseph Leinbach, a tailor, in Bethlehem; Johanna Maria (June 25, 1778), married to Andrew Benade, Episc. Fratrum; John Jacob (June 3, 1781), a hatter in Nazareth.
290. Sybilla Barbara Beck, m.n. Knauer. xi, n. 9. July 2. Born in Pfullingen, Würtemberg, March 24, 1719. In 1738 came, with her parents, to Georgia. Nov., 1738, married Ferdinand Henry Beck, a baker, who died in Bethlehem, in 1783. Of her nine children, three survived: Maria Christina, born in Georgia, Oct. 6, 1739; married Ernst Walther in Bethlehem; later married Michael Ruch, in Christianspring. Christian Henry, born July 17, 1757, in Bethlehem ; married Anna Christina Eyerly ; Anna Sybilla, born May II, 1760, in Philadelphia ; married John Kremser.

294. Maria Kunz, m.n. Dominick. xi, n. 10. Jan. 13. (Gnadenthal.) Born Sept. II, 1725, in Lower Silesia. Her father died when she was four years old. Married Gottfried Schulz in Bethlehem, July 15, 1749. Of seven children, three sons survived : Gottfried, who moved to North Carolina ; John, living in Nazareth ; Samuel, who moved to North Carolina. Her husband died in

1779. In 1782 married John David Kunz, who was born in Zauchtenthal, Moravia, and died in Gnadenthal, Dec., 1797.
295. Andreas Busse. xiv, s. 3. Jan. 22. Deacon of the Church, and pastor of the church at Nazareth and member of the Provincial Board. Born Dec. 6, 1734, in Reval, Livonia.' Married Sept. 9, 1795, Anna Christina Busch. Two children survived : Anna Rosina, married Wm. Rauch, of Lititz, and Christian David.
296. Melchior Christ. xii, s. 18. Feb. 24. Born in Lauffen, Würtemberg, Sept. 12, 1734. Came to America with his parents, Rudolph and Anna (Wolfer) Christ, in 1750. Married Maria Barbara Kling, at Lititz, Sept. 19, 1771. Three children survived : John, born in Lititz, July 9, 1772, married Elizabeth Grosch. Maria, married John Clewell.
