Organized the San Antonio National Bank, July 5th, 1866, and served continuously as its president for more than forty-eight years, when he retired from active service. His gifts have been numerous, especially to education and much of his time has been devoted to opening up wider oppor- tunities for broader education in the State University and public schools. One of the last tributes in appre- ciation for his services to education was shown when San Antonio's newest and finest high school was made his namesake. For more than twenty-five years he served continuously as a member of the Board of Re- gents of the University of Texas. During this time he was the only Republican memher of the Board of Regents and all his appointments to this body were conferred by Democratic Governors. San Antonio will remember Mr. Brackenridge for two things in particular: one being the gift to the city of what has been called the South's most beautiful playground, "Brackenridge Park." But more important than this is San Antonio's water supply, pronounced by physicians as being unexcelled any place in the United States. This was the result of Mr. Brack- enidge's efforts while at the head of the San Antonio Waterworks to give San Antonio the very best that na- ture could provide. He not only gave the city its first flowing wells while he was president of the San Antonio Waterworks but added numerous others even after he severed his connection with this company. In this way he has materially assisted farm and ranch by keeping creeks flowing while others were dry. He is a 32d degree Mason.
