Outside of these two divisions, thousands of Texans were in other organizations and did their duty as only real men can know or under- stand. Speaking of Texas troops, the com- manding general of the American Expeditionary Forces referred to them as men "who did what was to be expected when we remember the his- tory of their state, nurtured, as they are, in the cradle of loyalty and patriotism. I con- sider that the work of the 90th Division was not surpassed and the 36th was a very good second to it." Approximately 3,000 loyal Texans paid the supreme sacrifice in France in order that freedom and justice might not die.

And after two years the war was over and the boys came home. They found that the reconstruction area had problems far more reaching than the problems of warfare. There are battles of peace as of war. Instinctively the men who were organized into the greatest fighting organization of our National history turned into an organization of their own, wherein they might work together toward the forwarding of the same principles of decent government for which they went to war in 1917.

For these reasons, therefore, the American Legion had its birth. Its work in the promot- ing of 100 per cent Americanism and kindred subjects speaks for itself.

The future of the American Legion will be what its membership shall make it, and re- membering of what material this membership is composed, we may say that the future is very bright. On the experience of the past shall we build our plans for a larger and better America always.

Here's to the state of a single star That sends its gleaming message afar, To tell of strength and a courage rare, Of skies that are blue and a land that is fair Of heroes who lived for the common weal, Of heroes who died that we might feel Ourselves secure in our broad domain Won by a faith that was not in vain. Then here's to our state of the many flags Whose hope for the future never lags, Whose allegiance grows ever more loyal and true

To her flag of the present-our red, white and blue.

THE STANDARD BLUE BOOK-TEXAS

This page was patriotically given by a friend, Sidney A. Long, in memory of Corporal Thos. W. Wood-Gone West.

IT " was a sad message indeed that brought the the news to loved ones and freds that Tom Wood had made the "supreme sacrifice" on November 5th, just six days before the armis- tice was signed.

The noble, self-sacrificing motherhood of America is now realizing, as never before, the heart sorrow and the tragedy of war, as the names of the "dead on the field of honor," are reported daily. Who can fathom the depths of the heartaches and the soul throbs that are borne upward on the wings of prayer, implor- ing Divine strength and comfort in this dark hour of their sore trial? But this, we are told, is war, and now the dreaded day of tribu- lation for many loved ones is at hand.

Among the more than fifty thousand soldier boys who, in the strength of their young man- hood, left their beautiful homeland for the bloody battlefields, nevermore in mortal flesh to return, was our young friend, Thomas W. Wood, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Wood, of 809 Pierce avenue, Houston.

Tom was just twenty-five years of age, a graduate of the Houston High School, and was identified with this church and Sunday School, having joined the old Shearn Church a num-

ber of years ago, when it was located on Texas Avenue.

He was a volunteer in the service, and in one of his letters home, he stated he was glad to learn that al lof his relatives in this war were volunteers also.

In France he was with the 357th Ambulance Company, 90th Division, which work, obviously, was a very dangerous, although a most import- ant branch of the active service. In writing of the hazardous nature of his duties, he remarked concerning the part that fear plays while un- der fire on the battlefield: "We find oursel- ves in some mean places sometimes, and I have learned that only a fool doesn't know fear; however, if a man has a high and right regard for duty, fear doesn't bother but just enough to make him careful."

In another letter we get a further insight in- to his nature, when he says "I find that the one thing that gives me most worry and con- cern is, driving under shrapnel, sometimes through gas, pitch dark, and over muddy, shell- torn roads, with patients in the ambulance. *

* * Running into mustard gas with four to eight helpless patients in the ambulance, you have to put on your mask, put masks on all the patients, and then drive out of this hell." Safe at home by the side of our comfortable firesides, we can scarcely imagine the heroic grit and character necessary to carry out an operation of this nature.

To those who knew him, it hardly seems pos- sible that a young man of Tom's build, gentle and sympathetic disposition should have been assigned to the particular line of duty in which he was engaged. But doubtless his official su- perior knew him best, and so, where the bul- lets from the machine guns were raking the field, shells on the land and in the air were bursting, and deadly, hell-born gases were hurled in waves and clouds across the shell- torn field, with that high conception of duty overcoming fear, referred to by him, there is where we find they placed him, only to die the death of the young hero that he was.

He realized that he was an American, and could not honorably do otherwise. The incom- parable heroes of the Alamo could have done no more. What a beautiful, high and noble mem- ory, therefore, sealed with the crimson flow of his very life's blood, he has bequeathed to a loving father and mother, brother and sisters!
