School Superintendent's Report.
Schools have been sustained for thirty-eight weeks, in each of the six districts during the school year just closed.
No. I. This school was taught by Miss Winnie Sherman, a capable, energetic teacher who was suc- cessful in keeping her pupils interested in their studies and having the support of parents; her records of at- tendance was by far the best in town.
No. 3. The spring term was taught by Miss Lottie Snow who was able to devote a great deal of ime to each scholar and very good progress was made by the few pupils that attended. The fall and winter terms were taught by Miss Florence M. Sher- man, who has had considerable experience as a teacher. Though lacking somewhat in the energy that is needed for full success, her pupils made marked advancement in Arithmetic and most of their other studies.
No. 4. The spring and fall terms were in charge of Miss Mary L. Halladay, who led her pupils along in a quiet, gentle way and made a very good record as a teacher, though she failed to maintain the disci-
-20-
pline that was needed during the last term. The win- ter term was taught by Miss Altha Bemis who was the right teacher in the right place and gave general satisfaction.
No. 5. Miss Altha Bemis had the spring and fall terms. The school was well governed and thoroughly taught. The winter term was in charge of Miss Addie Gould who worked faithfully, and with very good success, for the advancement of the scholars.
No. 6. Miss Winnifred Sherman was the instruc- tor during the year and with her knowledge of meth- ods, enthusiasm, and devotion to the work made the school a success.
No. 9. Miss Lula Knight taught the spring term and was quite a capable teacher for one without previ- ous experience. The fall term was taken by Miss Katherine Allen and the pupils made rapid progress in the various studies. Miss Eva Upton took charge of the winter term and by keeping her pupils well up to their work completed a profitable school year in this district.

GENERAL REMARKS .- In looking back we can see where many of our schools could have been improved, but on the whole the work done by teachers and pupils has been very satisfactory.
The adoption of free text-books has enabled the teachers to make a better gradation of classes and awaken an interest in the history of Vermont and the United States because suitable books upcn those sub- jects have been provided.
In no branch of study has there been greater im-
-- 21-
provement than in writing; the teachers have had plenty of books of suitable grades, enabling the pupils to make rapid progress.
Respectfully submitted,
E. H. JONES, Supt. of schools.
School Directors' Report.
In making our annual report, we wish to call your attention to the fact that we have complied with the re- quirements of Act No. 13 of the laws of 1894, in rela- tion to text books.
We have adopted or retained one book of a grade in the studies required by law to be taught, making an expense of $251.51. We believe they are up to date, and have been secured at a reasonable cost.
Cupboards have been placed in the school houses that the books may be properly kept when not in use. Three permits have been given to teachers in the past year.
There has been no enforcement of the law in re- gard to truancy. Still, we believe its enforcement would result in good, though it might be oppressive in certain cases and arouse hostility. Our financial trans- actions appear elsewhere in this report, to which we in- vite your attention.
We have endeavored to conduct school matters in a manner that would meet with your approval and sup- port. If we have succeeded, we ask your commend- ation ; wherein we have erred we ask your indulgence.
E. H. JONES, M. H. LYMAN, School Directors.
W. D. HOWE.
