School Superintendent's Report.

No. I. The three terms were taught by Miss. Addie M. Gould, who had fairly good success. The attendance was excellent, but during the last term there seemed to be a lack of discipline and a failure to attend to study by some of the pupils which made it impossi- ble for them to make much progress ; yet others made marked advancement.

No. 4. The spring term was taught by Miss Winifred Sherman, a capable teacher, who could not do as good work as usual because the attendance was so irregular. The fall term was in charge of Mr. Frank Dobbin, who was well liked by all his pupils. He had a remarkable faculty for keeping them interested, yet he seemed to be too willing to help in recitations and did not require enough of the pupils in the preparation of their lessons. Miss Marion Howe had the winter term. Her scholars were required to learn thoroughly all lessons given them and gave evidence by their reci- tations that they were being taught by a competent and painstaking teacher.

No. 5. Miss Winifred Sherman taught here dur- ing the year. The spring and fall terms were very satisfactory as to the progress made in study, but the attendance was not what it should have been. During the winter the attendance was much better. Teacher and scholars working together made this term one of the best of recent years in that school.

No. 6. Miss Mabel Stowe, a teacher of experience and ability, had the spring term, and by hard, patient work brought the school under very good discipline and made a success where many would have failed.

26

The fall and winter terms were taught by Miss Lina Hunt, who, during the fall led her pupils along in a quiet, pleasant way, doing good and acceptable work. The winter term I did not visit, but learned there was lack of interest, and dissatisfaction among some of the scholars-a few were taken out. Whether it was any fault on the part of the teacher, we very much doubt.

No. 8. The spring term was taught by Miss Florence M. Sherman, who gave general satisfaction. Miss Nora Haynes had the fall term and kept up a good degree of interest, making a success of the work. Miss Minnie Timson taught her first term here during the winter. She made some changes in the usual order of recitations, and endeavored to enforce a strict discipline, which, with her inability to solve and explain problems under the Vermont rule for partial payments, made trouble, and two pupils left school. These things no doubt prevented her from attaining full success

REMARKS.

Our schools have not been wholly satisfactory, yet we believe they have been up to the average of recent years. All teachers need the encouragement and sup- port of the parents, who should see that their children attend regularly, and, if possible, visit them in the school- room, thus coming into touch with the work being done.

Respectfully submitted,

E. H. JONES,

Superintendent of Schools.

School Directors' Report.

The present year, we have sustained five legal schools of twenty-eight weeks each. The house in No. 8 was repaired and a school held there, to which the scholars in No. 9 were transported.

The house in No. 5 has been repaired inside and furnished with modern seats. No school has been held in No. 3-the scholars being taken to No. I. Two cases of truancy were reported, only one of which was acted upon by the truant officer. Some books and supplies have been purchased.

The total expense for schools appears in our finan- cial report to which we invite your attention.
