Report of School Superintendent
During the past year six legal schools have been maintained. They have been taught as follows :
No. 1, Miss Isabella Roger, 28 weeks.
No. 3, Charles F. Lazelle, 28 weeks.
No. 4, Miss Winifred Sherman, 28 weeks.
No. 5, Miss Ellen Stark, 9 weeks.
No. 5, Miss Minnie Pratt, 12 weeks.
No. 5, Miss Maude Stark, 7 weeks.
No. 6, Miss Nina Cutting, 28 weeks.
No. 8, Miss Charlotte Wheeler, 28 weeks.
With the exception of Miss Pratt, who was granted a permit to teach twelve weeks, all have had previous experience in teaching. Five have taught successfully for several years in this and other towns.
By comparing the work of the several schools it has been found that the standard of scholarship is much higher in some of them than it is in others-the pupils farther advanced, their attendance more regular, their interest better sustained. When this fact is considered, after making due allowance for any difference there may be in the mental capacity of the scholars, it must be admitted that the standard set and the progress made, is largely owing to the earnest, thorough work of our best teachers, who have been retained as long as possi- ble. Taken as a whole the schools were better than they have been for several years.
22
Many of the pupils who attended regularly made marked advancement along most lines of study, particularly in reading, showing better appreciation of the thought of the lesson, with better power of expression.
Since the adoption of the vertical system there has been in- creasing uniformity and improvement in writing until the larger part of our pupils now write a neat. legible hand.
There is need of more regular attendance by some of the scholars if they wish or expect to get much education.
The school house in No. 8 has been repaired and furnished with modern desks, so that all in town are in very good con- dition and will need but little outlay for several years.
