School Superintendent's Report
Six schools of twenty-eight weeks each have been supported the past year, and have been taught by the following teachers, all of whom held certificates granted by the county examiner.
Miss Marion E. Howe, one term, No. 1.
Miss Itol B. Jones, 66 60
1.
Miss Flora Gould, 66 66 1.
Miss Lillian Pratt,
66 66 3.
Miss Ethel Prouty, two terms, " 3.
Miss Winifred Sherman, three terms, No. 4.
Miss Itol B. Jones, one term, " 5.
Miss Lillian Pratt,
66 5.
Miss Lula Hall, 66 5.
Miss Luella Williams, three terms, 6.
Miss Ethel Prouty, one term,
8.
Miss Charlotte Wheeler, two terms,
8.
Of these only two have remained in the same school the full year. They have worked faithfully and with good results to secure right mental development and a high standard of work.
In No. 6 only part of the legal scholars attended the three terms, thus making the year of little value to them in trying to get an education.
In most of the other schools very good work has been done, and the pupils have made fair progress in their studies.
We have had terms the past year that were not very satisfactory, the fault not being wholly with the teacher. The scholars did not seem to realize that growth in men- tal power and getting an education must depend some- what upon their own efforts, instead of the teacher's.
19
New arithmetics, geographies, language books, spel- ling books, with readers of the lower grades, and histori- cal readers for the advanced classes were adopted and put into the schools during the year.
These, with the new dictionaries, make all the books needed for present use. In making the exchange, some- thing was received for old books, thus reducing the cost of some of the new ones.
The attendance has been on the whole hardly up to the average.
Nearly all of the children in town get all the educa- tion they ever have, in our common schools, before they are eighteen years of age, therefore let me urge upon you as parents to see that they attend regularly and im- prove the short time given them to prepare for life's work.
Respectfully submitted,
E. H. JONES.

Report of School Superintendent
Six schools of twenty-eight weeks each have been maintained during the year and have been taught by the following teachers, three of whom were granted permits. One of these had taught successfully for several years upon certificates granted by H. D. Ryder:
No. 1, Mrs. Winnie Adams, 9 weeks.
1, Miss Isabella Roger, 12 weeks.
1, Miss Flora Gould, 7 weeks.
3, Miss Ethel Russell, 9 weeks.
3, Mr. Chas. F. Lazelle, 19 weeks.
4, Miss Winifred Sherman, 28 weeks.
5, Miss Lula Hall, 9 weeks.
5, Miss Ellen Stark, 19 weeks.
6, Miss Maude Stark, 28 weeks.
8, Miss Charlotte Wheeler, 28 weeks.
Of these teachers, three have remained in the same schools the full year. They have done good work, which was shown by the marked advancement of most of their pupils along the different lines of study.
Nearly all of the other teachers have done creditable work, probably all that could have been expected with existing conditions.
The spring term in No. 1 was excellent. The atten- dance was the best in town. The work of the fall term was fairly satisfactory but not up to the standard of the spring. Circumstances were such during the win- ter that the scholars did not learn as they should have done, and the term was not a profitable one.
In No. 5 only five scholars were enrolled in the win- ter. Two of these attended occasionally; the other three were at school regularly and made good progress
19
in the few studies taken. Unless there are more scholars the coming year it will be for the best interests of the town to transport them to No. 3.
The continued depopulation of the town with the fewer children to educate will, in the near future, make it necessary to consolidate some of our schools so as to give, as near as may be, equal advantages to every child and to prevent the increase of taxation for school pur- poses.
The attendance during the spring term in No. 1, 3, and 4 was nearly perfect but the average for the schools taken together was very low for the year. The whole number of pupils enrolled was 95, the average attendance was 64 per day. Sickness caused part of this falling off in attendance but some of it was by indifference or care- lessness of parents to see that children were at school regularly.
New desks were put into the school house in No. 1 last spring. All now have modern desks except the one in No. 8 which ought to be thoroughly repaired to make it comfortable during cold weather.
All necessary supplies have been furnished and dis- tributed by the directors. The are plenty of books of all grades. Maps and charts enough for present use. Only in extreme cases should teachers be hired who are without certificates if we want progressive, up-to-date work in our schools.
