Miss Bertha Bemis,

Miss Bertha Bemis,

1 term, school No. 8

Mr. John G. King, 1 term, school No. 8

Miss H. Mary Shippee,

1 term, school No. 8

More changes than usual have been made among the teach- ers for the different schools. When your directors were informed in regard to the work being done in some of them, changes were made which proved to be for the best interests of the scholars.

The spring term in No. I. and the fall term in No. 8 were not very satisfactory. In the first there was very poor discipline, resulting in a loss of interest in study, and slow progress by the pupils. In the sceond, there was lack of method and thoroughness which was very noticeable.

With these exceptions the schools have been up to the average of recent years.

19

Most of the teachers have worked faithfully to keep their pupils interested and to secure a high standard of work; also a better attendance.

In map-drawing, composition, book-keeping and all writ- ten exercises there has been improvement, showing careful study and mental development on the part of the scholar.

One case of truancy was reported to the truant officer ; suit was brought and a fine imposed with the result that the boy in question attended school regularly till the close of the term.

There were other cases of truancy which should have been reported and investigated. The State has made laws for compulsory attendance. The town supports its schools that all the children of school age may get an education and it is without malice toward any one that these cases should be promptly reported and acted upon that the children suffer no loss by the indifference or neglect of parents.

At the present time there are only one hundred children of school age in town; eighty-four were enrolled as scholars during the year-twelve of these have removed from town, leaving not more than seventy-five at most to attend school the coming year.

While the number of children has been steadily decreas- ing for several years the directors have not thought it advisable to consolidate the schools, but the time has come when the subject ought to receive careful consideration. If reasonable transportation can be secured some of the smaller schools can be united with benefit to the scholars and econ- omy to the town. State aid for every legal school has been a great help and is quite an inducement to support small schools. A teacher who is a worker and capable, ought to be able to teach twenty or twenty-five pupils without gettting overworked.

I would recommend that the scholars in No. 5 be taken to

20

No. 3; that the fall terms commence not later than the mid- dle of August; that the winter terms may be shortened two weeks.

Respectfully submitted, E. H. JONES,

Superintendent of Schools.

REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS.

The past year our schools have been in charge of com- petent teachers, who have had long and successful experience in teaching. They have endeavored by the use of good methods to develop the pupil's mind, so that progress could be made along the different lines of study from the start.

The true purpose of education is to enable the child to make the most of himself by developing, as fully as possible, the power of observation, reason, memory and self restraint. Our best teachers have worked to accomplish this purpose, and the earnest cooperation of all parents is requested that such work shall be successful.

The failure to maintain proper discipline detracted from the otherwise good work in one school, and the enforcement of it by corporal punishment in another school aroused a spirit of resentment in a few of the scholars, which was despicable.

A good number attended regularly and were absent only a few days during the year, while some of the pupils were very irregular in attendance. The whole number of scholars en- rolled during the year was eighty-five, with an average at- tendance of sixty-three per day.

Outline maps have been purchased and put into the schools in addition to the necessary supplies.

Some new books may be needed the coming year to re- place those which are so badly worn as to be unfit for use.

The school houses are in fairly good condition and will need little expenditure at present.

Respectfully submitted,

E. H. JONES,

Superintendent of Schools.
