Superintendent's Report.

-----

During the past year we have supported six schools for twenty-eight weeks.

The scholars in District No. 9 were transported to No. 8 ; the Atwood and Harris children attended No. 5 during the spring and fall terms.

The school in No. 3 is so small that if satisfactory arrangements could be made, it would be better to have the children in a larger school.

The following is a list of teachers for the year : No. 1, Mrs. Clyde Adams, 9 weeks,

I, Mrs. Fred Johnson, 19

3, Miss Flora Gould, 9

3, Mrs. Lucian Hunt, 10

3, Miss Itol Jones, 9

4, " Winifred Sherman, 28 weeks,

5, Mr. Ernest Monroe, 9 weeks,

5, Miss Emogene Bogle, 19 weeks,

6, Mr. G. N. Wyman, 28

8, Miss Alice White, 18 8 Rose Haynes, IO

With two exceptions, the teachers have had pre- vious experience in teaching. In most of the schools good interest has been maintained and the work has been up to the average.

The attendance has not been so good as we could

26

wish, but in many cases, especially during the winter term, when there was a great deal of sickness, absence was unavoidable. In several schools there have been many instances of tardiness. Some of these might have been prevented by more care on the part of parents and children.

. Writing has been somewhat neglected in our schools, but this is not wholly the fault of the teachers. Suitable books with printed copies ought to be pro- vided.

There are plenty of books of all kinds except primary readers. It would be a help to have two or three different books of the first and second grades.

Maps of the world have been placed in four of the schools this year.

Some of the schoolbooks show marks of hard usage, being badly soiled and torn. Better care should be taken of them.

The registers show that a few parents have visited the schools. It would be a help to both teachers and. scholars if more would do so.

WINIFRED M. SHERMAN, East Dover, Vt.,

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.

There have been five schools of twenty-eight weeks each and one of nine weeks maintained during the past year.

The scholars in school No. 3 were taken to No. 1 in the spring and fall. 1

A school was supported for nine weeks in No. 3 the present winter for the accommodation of six pupils.

The schools have been in charge of the following teachers:

No. 1, Mrs. Fred E. Johnson, 28 weeks.

3, Miss Lillian Pratt, 9 weeks.

4, Miss Winifred Sherman, 28 weeks.

5, Miss Fidelia Estabrook, 28 weeks.

6,

Mr. Geo. N. Wyman, 28 weeks.

8, Miss Alice White, 26 weeks.

8, Miss Nina Cutting, 2 weeks.

On account of sickness Miss White was unable to finish her school, and Miss Cutting completed the term.

With the exception of Miss Pratt, the teachers have had a great deal of experience in teaching and all were retained the full school year.

In many of the schools the good work which was done showed the wisdom of retaining the teachers as long as possible, but in others a change might have been for the best interests of the pupils.

The attendance has been good with few instances of tardiness.

The vertical system of writing was introduced in the spring'and the scholars have made excellent progress in learning it.

Nearly all the school books are in bad shape and

19

show the effects of very hard usage, being unbound, marked, torn and dirty, showing that most pupils do not take as good care of the books as when parents furnish their own children with them.

We would urge parents to teach the children to use such books carefully, that they must not be torn and marked needlessly.

E. H. JONES.
