Superintendent's Report.
-
No. I. Miss Winnie Sherman taught the three terms. The school was one of the largest in town. The teacher was capable, energetic and full of enthusiasm and the scholars diligent and well behaved, so of course this was a very successful school. The reading, so much neglected in late years, was particular- ly good and the other lessons were well learned. Owing to sickness, the attendance was not so good in the winter term as it would undoubtedly have been.
No. 3. In the spring there was no school here, the pupils being carried to No. I. The fall term was taught by Miss Fannie Goodell, who had plenty of time to devote to her few small pupils. They seemed interested in their lessons aud made good progress, as they did also in the winter term under the charge of Charles F. Lazelle, an experienced teacher. The at- tendance of the two older pupils was bad in the fall, but more regular in the winter.
No. 4. Miss Lottie Hunt had charge of this school the entire year. The reading was bad, but more interest was shown in spelling than in any other school in town. The lessons were not learned so thor- oughly as they should have been and the teacher did more than her part in the recitations.
No. 5. Here Miss Winifred Sherman taught throughout the year, making six terms in succession. The teacher is patient and painstaking and the scholars
29
showed their respect for her and for themselves by their diligence and good deportment. I should say the school had been a decided success.
No. 6. George N. Wyman, a very experienced teacher, taught the three terms. This school was rather demoralized, but under his efficient management it has been brought back to a better condition He has worked very hard and brought most of the pupils to take an interest in their work so they have made good progress. On the whole I think the school is in a bet ter condition than it has been for years.
No. 8 The spring term was taught by Miss Emogene Bogle, who was not as successful as she might have been in a different school. A few of the pupils did very well, but no teacher, however hard she may try, can make a success where a few of the oldest scholars are trying just as hard to make it a failure. The fall and winter terms were taught by George Batchelder, who had better success, but only a few of the pupils at- tended regularly and worked well. Much needs to be done yet on the part of most of the scholars (and per- haps the parents too) to bring the school up to an average with others in town.
Generally our schools have been as satisfactory as perhaps could be expected. It seems to me as though reading and spelling should 'be taught more thoroughly, but where there are so many things to be taught per- haps as much time has been given them as could well be spared. But very few parents have visited the schools. This is wrong. They ought not to feel that letting their children go to school if they wish-that is, if they don't care for their work at home-is all that is
30
needful. They should have enough interest in them to send them to school to obey and to study and then visit them there and see for themselves what is being done. I think pupils would take more interest and teachers be more encouraged if they would do so.
MRS. HELEN R. HARRIS, Superintendent of Schools.
