REPORT OF THE LIBRARIAN FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 1, 1918.

Average daily circulation of books and magazines was 63.9. Largest circulation was 222, November 6th.

During the year 198 volumes were added to the library, of which 33 were bound magazines, 9 were gifts, and 156 were purchased at a cost of $203.51. The library subscribed to 29 magazines and two daily newspapers for the reading room tables at a cost of $73.12.

Other expenses of the year, including binding bills, in- surance, printing, telephone rental, supplies, express and lib- rarians' salaries, amounted to $745.51.

During the year the library was closed on 43 regular days, as follows, on 23 days last winter on account of coal shortage, on 17 days in October during the influenza epidemic, on 3 holidays, and on one evening on account of no electricity.

In addition to more closings than we have ever had, the children were not allowed to draw books during the first twenty days of December, the first month of our last library year, on account of an epidemic of scarlet fever. It was ex- pected that all this would materially lower the circulation

39

records of the year, but the falling off in circulation, from the year before, was only 246, a deficit which could easily have been made up in two full days' circulation. It would seem that these figures speak well for the reading habit of the people of the town.

Two shipments of books have been made for the soldiers' and sailors' libraries, one to the A. L. A. station at Hoboken, to be-sent overseas, and the other to the Harvard station for use in this country. These books, 282 in number, were con- tributed by individuals, and book pockets were pasted in and book cards made at the library.

A printed list of the accessions of 1918 is now ready for free distribution.

During the past year the Walker Memorial building and the lot was deeded to the Maclure Library Association, and the bequests of the will of Dr. H. F. Walker paid by the executor, Prof. Williston Walker.

Respectfully submitted,

MARY R. ALLEN, Librarian.
