REPORT OF THE LIBRARIAN FOR THE YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 1, 1919.

Number of afternoons the library was open

203

Number of evenings open 99

Total number of openings

302

Number of books circulated (adult reading)

7,367

Number of books circulated from children's room . 3,139

Total book circulation

10,506

Current magazine circulation

3,030

Sets of stereographs circulated 14

Total circulation

13,550

This was a gain in circulation of 2,929, over that of the previous year, and the largest circulation the library has ever had. The average daily circulation was 66.7, Every year the largest circulation is in the month of March. Last year 1401 books and magazines were drawn during that month.

The total number of volumes added to the library during the year was 220, of which 24 were bound magazines, nine were gifts, and 187 were purchased at a cost of $268.63.

The library subscribed to 28 magazines and two daily news- papers for the reading-room tables at a cost of $83.50, and one magazine subscription was contributed.

There was received at the loan-desk during the year for fines and subscriptions, $43.24; and for rentals of two cent a day books, $30.53. From the money received from fines, there was paid out $13.32 for supplies, mending materials, express, etc., and the balance of $60.45 was paid over to the treasurer. Each year the full amount earned from the rental of books of fiction at two cents a day is turned over to the book fund for the purchase of more books.

43

During the year the librarian drew 99 orders on the treas- urer of the Association for the payment of all approved bills of the year, amounting to $1,784.17.

The treasurer of the Association received from the town ap- proportion of 2% on the grand list toward the running expenses of the library $325.40.

Forty-three books, contributed by townspeople for the camp libraries, were collected at the library and sent on as directed by the American Library Association. . These made a total of 278 books which Pittsford contributed to the A. L. A. war libraries.

The library has more than regained the loss in circulation, sustained during the war, but the gain is more than it should be in the percent of fiction read.

In these days of the doctrine of Thrift, the librarians wish to emphasize the urgent need of the proper care of all books borrowed from the library both by the children and the older people. Many dollars would be saved if we could all acquire this habit.

A free list of the accessions of 1919 has just been printed and may be procured at the loan-desk.

Respectfully submitted,

MARY T. R. ALLEN, Librarian.
