The Bowen Fund

The annual interest on the fund left by the late Mr. Crom- well Bowen, for the relief of the worthy poor, was duly re- ceived from the town treasury and paid in small sums to the persons designated by the board of distribution. The orders upon which the money was paid are in the possession of the Trustee, and may be examined by those interested in the mat- ter.

If the Florence, Wheaton and Douglass schools should be consolidated, better results could undoubtedly be obtained without any additional expense after a suitable building had been erected. The laws of the state do not now furnish so great financial assistance in such consolidation as they did

three years ago, but we believe it is a matter deserving the careful consideration of the voters of the town.

The rapid increase in the price of all supplies is adding somewhat to the cost of the schools but, through the co-oper- ation of teachers, we feel that economy is being practiced in the use of these so far as efficiency will warrant.

Respectfully submitted, W. A. BEEBE, Superintendent of Schools.

School Directors' Report

Knowing the increased cost of every single item pertaining to the maintenance of our schools we have found it necessary to economize in every possible way to keep within our appro- priation without jeopardizing the present high standing of all schools throughout the town.

We have had new roofs on the Douglass School and a part roof on the Wheaton.

The Lothrop building has been painted throughout. New door casings have been put on all through the basement. Elec- tric light fixtures have been installed in every room in the building. The insurance has been renewed with a five-year paid policy at a cost of $315. We have a complete set of new grates in the building to be installed when needed.

11

Cost of transportation has about doubled since last year owing to the mile and one-half clause in the Acts of 1915.

We feel that it will be next to impossible to run the schools for the year to come on the same tax as the past year.

DR. T. J. HAGAN, E. H. ALLEN, A. J. WIMETT, School Directors.
