CHICAGO, ROCK ISLAND & PACIFIC R'Y
Is The Great Connecting Link between the East and the West !
Its main line runs from Chicago to_Council Bluffs, passing through Joliet, Ottawa, La Salle, Geneseo, Moline, Rock Island, Davenport, West Liberty, Iowa City, Marengo, Brooklyn, Grinnell, Des Moines (the capital of Iowa), Stuart, Atlan- tic, and Avoca: with branches from Bureau Junction to Peorla; Wilton Junction to Musca- tine, Washington, Fairfield Eldon, Belknap, Centreville, Princeton, Trenton, Gallatin, Came- ron, Leavenworth, Atchison, and Kansas City; Washington toSigourney, Oskaloosa. and Knox- ville; Keokuk to Farmington, Bonaparte, Ben- tonsport, Independent, Eldon, Ottumwa, Eddy- ville, Oskaloosa, Pella, Monroe, and Des Moines; Mt. Zion to Keosauqua; Newton to Monroe; Des Moines to Indianola and Winterset; Atlantic to Griswold and Audubon; and Avoca to Harlan and Carson. This is positively the only Rail- road, which owns, and operates a through line from Chicago into the State of Kansas.
Through Express Passenger Trains, with Pull- man Palace Cars attached, are run each way daily between CHICAGO and PEORIA, KANSAS CITY, COUNCIL BLUFFS, LEAVENWORTH and. ATCHI- SON. Through cars are also run between Milwau- kee and Kansas City, via the " Milwaukee and Rock Island Short Line."
The "Great Rock Island " is magnificently equipped. Its road bed is simply perfect, and its track is laid with steel rails.
What will please you most will be the pleasure of enjoying your meals, while passing over the beautiful prairies of Illinols and Iowa, in one of our magnificent Dining Cars that accompany all Through Express Trains. You get an entire meal, as good as is served in any first-class hotel, for seventy-five cents.
Appreciating the fact that a majority of the people prefer separate apartments for different purposes (and the immense passenger business of this line warranting it). we are pleased to an- nounce that this Company runs Pullman Palace
Sleeping Cars for sleeping purposes, and Palace Dining Cars for eating purposes only. One other great feature of our Palace Cars is a SMOKING SALOON where you can enjoy your "Havana" at all hours of the day
Magnificent Iron Bridges span the Mississippi and Missouri rivers at all points crossed by this line, and transfers are avoided at Council Bluffs, Kansas City, Leavenworth and Atchison, con- nections being made in Union Depots.
The principal R. R. connections of this great Through Line are as follows: At CHICAGO, with all diverging lines for the East and South.
At ENGLEWOOD, with the L.S. & M.S., and P., Ft. W. & C. R. Rds.

Arizona. 265 ARIZONA. ALPHABETICALLY. ARIZONA has for its sister States and Territories, Utah on the north, New Mex- ico on the East, Sonora of Old Mexico on the south, California and Nevada on the west. Its area is as much as all of the New England States put together, and two to three times as large as almost any one of the Western States. Of all the Territories of the United States there are none that are exciting more interest than Arizona. Although it has been known for many years that her mountains are teeming with minerals, very few have had the courage to face the trials of a settlement there. Her remoteness from commercial centers, and the expense attached to the transportation of articles of use, have always been an obstacle to her development. Since the advent of the Southern Pacific Railroad, however, a flow of the tide of immigration has set in toward the new El Dorado. The railroad is certainly entitled to the credit of civilizing this dependency, and to its presence alone a development of her resources is attributable. The time is not far distant, we predict, when her claims to Statehood will be recognized, for very soon she will be the possessor of a population that will entitle her to admis- sion to the Union. This is in the face of all the set-backs that Arizona has suffered from. In the first place, exaggerated stories have gone forth of the state of society and the laxity of law in the Territory. These reports have grown from the old story of a bar-room fight or an old woman's account of a stage rob- bery into the direst outrage by the time they have reached the outside world. We are sorry to say that the machinery of the law does not work as smoothly as it should sometimes, and wonder that more organized efforts are not made for improvement, when it is so plain that the report of any dereliction will spread SON, 319 Market Street, San Francisco. more rapidly than an account of any of the Territory's advantages; but after a sojourn in several of the frontier towns during the past season, we can safely say that life and property are as much respected and as safe there as in any similarly constituted community we know of. The climate of the Territory is equable, and her altitude is an assurance against disease. The mines of the Territory are as yet undeveloped, though capital seeking investment is by no means timid. Notwithstanding that the mines of Arizona are generally in their infancy, more bullion has been produced in proportion to the money invested than in any other mining district except California. Now that machinery for mills and mining can be brought into the Territory at something like a reasonable price for transportation, we expect to see some wonderful productions. Prospectors are swarming through the gulches and on the mountain sides, locating claims, and immigration is rapidly coming in. In view of the grand future that is so probably in store for Arizona, the better class of citizens should see to it that no stumbling-block is in the way of her progress. Vices grow by what they feed on, and unchecked hoodlumism in time would become as bold and serious as the foreign reports have it. Then the remedy for it might be worse than the disease; for now it only needs efficient officers of the law to do their simple duty. Arizona-Agua Fria-Antelope Valley. ALPHABETICALLY.
There is in many quarters of the Territory an abundance of fine timber, and in the manufacture of lumber to supply the heavy demand for building purposes an army of men is engaged. If a diversity of resources such as Arizona is fast becoming noted for can contribute to a rapid and permanent growth, then her near future will be crowned with that glory. Her destiny will place her in the front rank of the prosperous States.
It is noticeable how little effort is being made, except by the territorial newspa- pers, to advertise Arizona, when so little is known and so many inquiries being made about her topography and resources. Colorado and New Mexico have their Bureau of information for immigrants, sending out car-loads of printed matter, the value of which returns in sevenfold.
The bullion output of Arizona in 1881, as far as heard from, was $9,085,679 -- $5,149,129 from the Tombstone District alone. The copper output was 8,098,495 pounds. The Tucson Star predicts that the silver and gold bullion output for 1882 will reach $25,000,000, and the copper output over 40,000,000 pounds, as that industry is yet in its infancy.
Prescott is the capital. The laws of the Territory are similar to California. Arizona lies between latitude 31° and 37º north, and longitude 109° and 114º 40' west; 67,098,366 of its 72,906,240 acres are unsurveyed. The part lying north of the Gila was acquired by the treaty with Mexico. Arizona became a Territory in 1863, prior to which time it was a part of New Mexico. It is divided into ten counties. Mountain ranges are numerous, having a northwest and southeast course. Mount San Francisco, a volcanic cone, is 11,000 feet above the level of the sea. The Colorado, a remarkable river, is the largest one of the Territory, and finds its beginning in Utah. It flows southerly along the western border, emptying its waters into the Gulf of California. It has worn its bed to such an extent that some of its banks are perpendicular walls 7,000 feet high. Steamers traverse its waters for a distance of 612 miles. The building of the Southern Pacific gave great impetus to the business of Arizona. This company have 380 miles of road crossing from west to east.
