Fairbury, JEFFERSON COUNTY,
Is one of the thriving towns of southern Nebraska, which neith- er grasshopper, frost, hail nor drought has stopped from grow- ing. Some 1,300 souls live there, and enjoy the luxury of a beautiful, timbered public square, and a magnificent school building. There is a bank with an elegant stone front of native stone cut in metropolitan style. There are also the usual varie- ties of businesses and clever business men; and among the latter is Mr. Jenkins of the Tre- mont Hotel, an old timer, who is very accommodating. It is 152 miles northwest of St. Jo- seph, Missouri, on the St. J. & W. Railway and 100 miles southeast of Grand Island.

St. Paul,
HOWARD COUNTY,
Is the present terminus of the St. Joseph & Western Railroad, and is twenty miles north of Grand Island. It is a growing town of some 800 souls, a great grain and potato center, and bids fair to become a railroad center. It has a Court House, hotels, churches, a bank, eleva- tors, two newspapers-one the Free Press, having a cylinder press run by steam-etc., etc., that are of a character superior to those in many older places. Dr. Edward Fletcher is one of the pioneers of the place. He came there so early that he had to leave for a year or so until there should be more people.

Kansas City,
JACKSON COUNTY,
Is the second city in size and commercial importance in the State. It is situated upon the Missouri River, just below the mouth of the Kansas River, and bordering the Kansas State line. Its rapid growth since the war has been considered a marvel even in the Great West, where fast-growing cities form a char- acteristic feature of the country. The favorable location, the en- terprise of its inhabitants, and the permanent character of the improvements, all indicate a prosperous and substantial fut- ure. There are fifteen railroad lines centering here, and the Union Depot is one of the most noted in the country. A heavy business is transacted here with all points of the compass, and those who are acquainted with the connections have de- nominated this point "a key to the continent." The last census gives the city a population of over 60,000.
