Lawrence

Is the county seat of Douglas County, thirty-seven miles west of Kansas City, on the line of the Kansas Pacific Railroad, has a dleightful location for a city, is very handsomely built, and has a population of 10,000 souls. At one time in the history of the State, the city's enterprise was proverbial, but from some unac- countable cause her progress became impaired, and she finally ceased advancing altogether, finally beginning a retrograde movement that threatened dis- aster to her people pecuniarily. Her private residences are very pleasant homes, while the busi- ness and public buildings will compare very favorably with those of places much more metropolitan and pretentious. Still there is a dullness in her commerce and a want of activity in her manufacturing interests that is indeed deplor- able; and why such a condi- tion exists is more than we can tell. Certainly it is not for want of motive power for machinery, nor can it be attributed to a lack of fertility in her soil. At one time a street railroad was in active operation, but nothing bears evidence of its existence but the faint outlines of the road- bed, the rails and ties having been taken up some time since. Perhaps the kind of influence which gave to Kansas City her renewed growth will be felt by Lawrence before a great while, and she may therefore become a business center again. The schools of the place are good, the health excellent, and the

people are of a generous and hospitable nature. As a place of residence we have seen none that suited our fancy better.
