San Jose,
SANTA CLARA COUNTY,
Is the county seat, situated in one of the most fertile valleys in the State, bounded by- the Coast Range Mountains on the one side and the Santa Cruz Mount- ains on the other. It was set- tled more than a century ago by the Spanish missionaries, who gave it the name, which signi- fies "the beautiful." It ranks among the first cities of Califor- nia in point of wealth. Its population is 15,000. Its streets are laid out in right angles, and are broad and smooth, and kept well watered throughout its length and breadth. It is par- ticularly noted for its beautiful drives; in many avenues the trees form an arch over the driveway, and the houses are embowered in a dense growth of shrubbery and plants. There are an unusual number of ele- gant homes of fine architectural designs. Its schools and colleges
rank among the highest in the State; its churches are models of beauty, and it boasts the finest Court House in the State. Santa Clara Valley is famed for its genial climate, magnificent scenery, and the fertility of its soil. San Jose is reached from San Francisco by two lines of railroad; the Southern Pacific and the South Pacific Coast (narrow guage). The unchang- ing and lovely scenery along either route, made up of hills and dales, dotted with home-like country residences, make the trip one of real pleasure. There are three banks, three daily newspapers, and good hotels, of which latter the St. James gives ample proof, with its good cheer and home-like treatment of its guests.
