Salina.

SALINE COUNTY,

Is one of the most important towns of western Kansas, with a population of 3,000 souls. The place is very substantially built for one of its age, and possesses one of the finest school buildings in the State. It is a three-story brick, surmounted by an at- tractive observatory, in which has been placed a town clock. The streets are regularly laid out, running at right angles, and shaded with a uniform growth of shade trees of every variety. There are five news- papers, four English and one Swedish, all of which are pros- perous and ably managed, thus showing the nature of the spirit which permeates the community. Like most of the towns along the line of the Kansas Pacific Railroad, the pretty little city bears evidences on every hand

of improvement. The residences of the leading citizens are tastily and attractively built in roomy and neatly-arranged yards. The health of the place is always good, and its support comes from the agricultural interests. The soil surrounding the place is very rich and productive and the most of it thus far has been sown to grain, though the culti- vation of corn can be profitably engaged in. Vegetables, fruits, hay and cereals of every kind are produced in abundance in ordinary seasons with proper cultivation. It is the county seat of Saline County, 184 miles west of Kansas City. The place is supplied with the usual num- ber of hotels, where good accom- modation can always be had. Business in some branches is overdone, though a short time will afford . opportunities for others who may desire to locate in this section of the State.

The second city in size and importance in the county, and one of the prettiest little cities on the Atchison, Topeka & San- ta Fé R.
