SAN DIEGO CITY DIRECTORY.

INTRODUCTORY.

In preparing this, our third Directory for the City and County of San Diego, we have endeavored, by every means within our reach to have it complete, and re- liable. Our canvassers visited every house in the city and made every effort to obtain correct information on all matters herein contained, and we believe our pat- rons will be well pleased with the book. We believe this to be the best directory ever issued in the city.

It contains more names, and information on more subjects than any previous publication. In going the rounds, our canvassers inquired the number of persons living in each house, for the purpose of ascertaining the number of people living in the city. The result shows the population to be 19,740. This does not include tourists or temporary residents.

We have undertaken the publication of a directory for San Diego as a permanent business, believing that it will be better for all interested-the patrons as well as the publishers-for an established San Diego firm to do this work than to depend upon strangers.

Our next book will appear about the first of 1898, or as soon as the needs of the city and business interests will justify; and as was said in our last, "we will, from time to time add new features as occasion imay seem to warrant."

Believing that San Diegans will appreciate and pat- tronize a worthy home enterprise,

We are respectfully THE OLMSTED CO.

SAN DIEGO.

To Cabrillo belongs the honor of the discovery of San Diego Bay, and to Viscanio the honor of naming it San Diego. Although the discovery of the bay dates back to 1542, the connected history of the city and of the State begins in 1769, with the OLD MISSION FOUNDED 1769. planting of Califor- nia's first Mission at Old Town by Father Junipero Sierra. The city of San Diego is the oldest municipality SAN DIEGO BAY. in'California. The "Pueblo" was or- ganized January I, 1833. In the early fifties Spanish' and American life min- gled in trade and commerce at Old Town. The press. ent site of the city was purchased and laid out in 1867 by A.F. Horton. With the Advent of the Santa Fe railroad, in 1885, thousands . came to San Diego to seek new homes. To-day San Diego is a progressive

city of 20,000 inhabitants, enjoying all the modern ad- vantages of a city of many times its size. Its streets are graded, paved, lighted with electricity, and electric carlines traverse all parts of the city. Its 42 miles sewer system is the best; its 85 miles of water mains furnish all parts of the city with water.

Railroads connect the city with the surrounding fertile valleys.

The city boasts of unequaled educational advan- tages from Kindergarten to High School; magnificent churches and one of the finest opera houses in the State.

The climate of San Diego, which is conceded by emi- nent climafologists to be the best and most equable the year round, to be found on the western hemisphere, makes this a favored place or resort for the summer and winter. During the entire year from August, 1894, to July, 1895, there were only two hours when the murcury stood be- low 40° and only 22 hours when it registered above 80°. From1 1875 to 1891-6205 days -there were 6006 days of tem- above 80º nor below 40°.

Maximum and minimum tem- peratures monthly at San Diego for the past twenty-three years.
