JULIAN.
The Julian country is noted in Southern California as the great apple region. It is a horticultural, agricultural, grazing and mining region, and more nearly resembles the eastern coun- try than any other section. The town is located on the top of the mountain range overlooking the desert to the east, and the ocean on the west. It is 60 miles north-east from San Diego and 24 miles from Foster railroad station, from which point a daily stage is run. It is a well watered and timbered country, varied in its mining, agricultural and horticultural resources, wide in extent, rich in scenic beauty of mountain and valley, with a healthful, invigorating climate, a prolific soil, and an enterpris- ing people. An abundance of rain and snow falls in the winter season. The discovery of gold in Julian dates back to 1869, and during the past 20 years much gold has been produced. The mining interests in the surrounding country is now receiving a new impetus. Good high School and graded schools are provided for the people. Julian is at an elevation of about 4300 feet.
