ESCONDIDO.
Escondido is the largest interior town in San Diego County, and one of the most prosperous, owing to vari- ous advantages, in its elevation, its proper distance from the ocean for health, its mild and salubrious climate, and the enterprise, and energy of its well-to-do citizens,
It is situated at the terminus of the Escondido branch of the Southern California Railway, 21 miles East of Oceanside, 35 miles North of San Diego, and 61 miles around by way of Oceanside by rail.
The development of their most excellent system of water work, both for the town, and surrounding val- ley for irrigation purposes, has greatly encouraged the the people, and added new life to the surroundings so that the prospects for the future growth and develop- ment of both the town and surrounding country are especially bright.
Almost all branches of business are represented and the community is well supplied with churches; and the schools are fully up to the best. Escondido, like all other prosperous Southern California towns has a very fine and commodious hotel. Besides, she has several quite substantial business blocks, including a bank building of commendable dimensions.
The fruit industry; in the valley, which comprises about 15000 acres, is fast becoming the leading in- dusty. The soil and climate in the valley are suited to the growth of the various kinds of fruit, the citrus on the slightly elevated lands, and deciduous on the lower depressions, while the vineyards flourish as well as in any other section in Southern California.
The town is the trading center for a large area of country consisting of fertile hills and prolific valleys, with mountains that are known to contain ores of the
