Google

This is a digital copy of a book that was preserved for generations on library shelves before it was carefully scanned by Google as part of a project to make the world's books discoverable online.

It has survived long enough for the copyright to expire and the book to enter the public domain. A public domain book is one that was never subject to copyright or whose legal copyright term has expired. Whether a book is in the public domain may vary country to country. Public domain books are our gateways to the past, representing a wealth of history, culture and knowledge that's often difficult to discover.

Marks, notations and other marginalia present in the original volume will appear in this file - a reminder of this book's long journey from the publisher to a library and finally to you.

Usage guidelines

Google is proud to partner with libraries to digitize public domain materials and make them widely accessible. Public domain books belong to the public and we are merely their custodians. Nevertheless, this work is expensive, so in order to keep providing this resource, we have taken steps to prevent abuse by commercial parties, including placing technical restrictions on automated querying.

We also ask that you:

+ Make non-commercial use of the files We designed Google Book Search for use by individuals, and we request that you use these files for personal, non-commercial purposes.

+ Refrain from automated querying Do not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system: If you are conducting research on machine translation, optical character recognition or other areas where access to a large amount of text is helpful, please contact us. We encourage the use of public domain materials for these purposes and may be able to help.

+ Maintain attribution The Google "watermark" you see on each file is essential for informing people about this project and helping them find additional materials through Google Book Search. Please do not remove it.

+ Keep it legal Whatever your use, remember that you are responsible for ensuring that what you are doing is legal. Do not assume that just because we believe a book is in the public domain for users in the United States, that the work is also in the public domain for users in other countries. Whether a book is still in copyright varies from country to country, and we can't offer guidance on whether any specific use of any specific book is allowed. Please do not assume that a book's appearance in Google Book Search means it can be used in any manner anywhere in the world. Copyright infringement liability can be quite severe.

About Google Book Search

Google Book Search helps readers discover the world's books while helping authors and publishers reach new audiences. BUT A WORD TO SAY.

-

Two years ago the compiler of this work published a Directory of this city. He did not at that time contemplate another effort on the subject. Not that he regarded his work a failure, for he had reason to believe that it gave pretty general satisfaction. But the character of the work, the labor required and the pay in return leave but a small margin for ambition and a still narrower one for remuneration. However, it has fallen to his lot, on more occasions than one, to do, not what he preferred, but what the force of circumstances marked out for him. Impelled by that momentum he puts forth an- other edition, which is more extensive than the first and which required a greater amount of labor to compile it. With what favor this may meet, of course he cannot say. Pop- ular novel writers and experienced book-makers are all the while puzzling their brain as to what may be " pleasing and interesting,"-what will make a " hit." Then, it is not to be wondered at, should the laborer in the dry field of a Directory hesitate and have many doubts, while putting his work together (even though he labors assiduously with the best intention to have his production both valuable and interesting), as to whether it will be received by an appreciative public with approbation. He is aware of the questionable position, but being disposed to do something useful without the ornamental, and not having discovered any certain rule of success, his conclusion as to the best plan of action is to make the " gar- ment " and put it in the market ; it may please some, he would that it satisfy all and himself repay for the labor expended in getting it up. If his production fails and comes short of that line of usefulness, by which it must be measured, he will necessarily fail also to receive his " wages " in return and will have to do the best he can, with the conviction that he has faithfully endeavored to do justice to the subject. and for the fu- ture try something else, leaving the field to others who may have. a better appreciation of the subject and more capacity for linking dull, dry, stubborn facts together in a more pleasing shape.
