James Carolan & Co.'s building, on the corner of J and Front streets, was the first one raised to the high grade. E. D. Fell commenced the work about the middle of February, with hydraulic power.

The work of grading the streets moved slowly at first; as the property holders gained more confidence in being able to secure their property against the inroads of floods, the work moved more rapidly. The whole of Front street to Q is now up to the grade, J to Sixth, and K to Fourth. Front street is paved with cobbles from I to L, K from Front to Fourth ; J street has the Nicolson pavement laid from Front to Fourth, and as

soon as the season will admit of the work it will be paved to Fifth. Sev- eral houses on J street between Fifth and Sixth are being raised to high grade. In another Summer it is quite probable that the entire street to Seventh will be raised.

Manufactures.

Sacramento, in the common acceptation of the term, is not a manu- facturing city, yet there is a much larger amount of capital and labor employed in that line than many suppose. Her manufactures, while they admit of no great variety, will compare favorably with any in the State of their kind; in fact some of them are superior, both as regard capacity and the quality of the article made. The most prominent manufactures of the city are Iron Works and Flour Mills.

THE UNION IRON WORKS-On Front street, formerly known as Bow- stead's Foundry, was erected in 1851. It is now owned by Williams & Co., and affords employment for twenty-five or thirty men. During the Summer of 1866 the firm raised the main work shop to the high grade and made other convenient and costly improvements. This establish- ment works both brass and iron, and has generally been well patronized.

SACRAMENTO IRON WORKS, Goss & Lambard, proprietors, on I street, between Front and Second, was erected in 1852. The proprietors have, notwithstanding the heavy damages sustained by them from the fires and floods, which have more than once brought Sacramento to the verge of irretrievable ruin, continued to enlarge their shops and to add new and convenient machinery to their works. At the present time it is in the front rank of that class of establishments on this coast and can make anything of brass, copper or iron, from a faucet to the most powerful steam engine. This establishment has a capacity to work a hundred hands. It is well known, not only in California, but also the State of Nevada can bear witness that much of the stamping and crushing of quartz within her precincts is done by engines and pestles made at Goss & Lambard's.

FLOUR MILLS .- There are three Flour mills in Sacramento city. The Pioneer (Smith, Carroll & Co.), is situated in Slater's addition, near the Sacramento bridge; motive power steam. It has six run of stone and is one of the largest mills in the State. Its capacity is five hundred barrels of flour per day. The Lambard Mills, situate on I st between Front and Second, Redington & Williams, proprietors, has four run of stone and has a capacity to turn out four hundred barrels of flour per day. The Pho- nix Mills, at the corner of J. and 13th streets, Reel & Barber, proprietors, motive power steam, has three run of stone and capacity to manufacture two hundred aud fifty barrels per day.

CARRIAGE AND WAGON MANUFACTURES .- There are seven different shops, and either of them can readily construct anything in their line, both serviceable and handsome. In fact, the fine carriages that are made in this city will, for beauty of structure and durability, equal any made in the United States. No place can boast of finer workmen, or those dis- posed to do a better job.
