This insti- tution of learning was first established in the Spring of 1863, as a day school. The number of scholars at first was small, however, at the expiration of the first year, there were over fifty in attendance. As the school grew older, it also increased in favor. In the Summer of 1867, the proprietors had a fine brick building erected on I, between Tenth and Eleventh sts., which they now occupy, and we are pleased to say, are re- ceiving encouragement in return for their laudable enterprise. This school is being brought to that standard which will compare favorably with like institutions in the At- lantic States. The course of studies to be completed, before young ladies can graduate, is as full as is required in most of Ladies'. Seminaries in older communities. SACRAMENTO CITY.

THE STATE AGRICULTURAL PAVILION.

This commodious and elegant building, erected by the people of Sacramento city and county for the accommodation of Fairs of the State Agricultural Society, may justly be regarded as a monument of their spirit and liberality.

In the month of June, 1859, the ground upon which this building was located-a lot 160 feet square, situated on the corner of Sixth and M streets-was purchased, and the Society, having selected the plan of M. F. Butler for the building, at once entered upon its erection. The corner stone was laid with appropriate ceremonies on the Ist of July, 1859, and on the 13th of August the immense structure was in complete readiness for the purpose for which it was designed, the work reflecting credit upon all parties en- gaged in its construction.

Cemeteries.

THE CITY CEMETERY-Was located in 1850. It is on Tenth street, south of Y. These grounds were surveyed and divided into lots and tiers for burial purposes, in 1856, and a Superintendent appointed. The present inclosure contains ten acres. Much time and money has been spent in cultivating ornamental trees and shrubbery. A lodge or gateway was built, 1858, at the entrance of the grounds, at a cost of about $3,000. The Cemetery is supplied with water, conducted in pipe, from the City Water Works. It has a fine reservoir in the center. The State plot, 80 by 80 feet, inclosed by a brick wall and granite coping. The firemen's plot, inclosed by brick wall and granite coping. Masonic plot, 7,276 square feet inclosed by brick wall. Pioneers' plot, 2,272 feet, in- closed by brick wall. Odd Fellows' plot, 138 by 104 feet, inclosed by brick wall, and 500 family plots, many of them beautifully ornamented with shrubbery. Israel Luce is the Superintendent; office, 131 K street.

THE SUTTER FORT BURYING GROUND (now Helvetia Cemetery) .- This was the first place selected for the burial of the dead in 1849, and was used by many who preferred that place to the City Cemetery, until April, 1857, when the late J. W. Reeves purchased the land, laid it out in tiers and private burial lots, with wide avenues and alleys. The grounds, twenty acres, are inclosed with a nice picket fence. The Cemetery is beauti- fully decorated with shade trees and ornamental evergreen shrubbery, rose bushes of many varieties, etc. There is also a public reception vault in the Cemetery, and three large reservoirs, and over 5,000 feet of lead and iron pipe laid through the grounds; also a nice fountain. The office of Mrs. J. W. Reeves is 53 Fourth street, between J and K.

THE JEWISH CEMETERY .- This Cemetery is located on J street, south side, and a little east of Thirty-first street. The Cemetery is owned by the Hebrew Benevolent Associ- ation, and was established in 1850. This Society erected a chapel therein, and enclosed the grounds with a massive brick wall, post and gateways, in 1863, at a cost of $2,500.

ST. JOSEPH CEMETERY .- Corner of Y and Twenty-first streets, was purchased in the Summer of 1864, by the congregation of St. Rose's Church, and was consecrated by Most Rev. J. S. Alemany, Archbishop of San Francisco, on the 7th May, 1865, and has since been used as a burial ground by the congregation. The Cemetery embraces twenty acres. It is well adapted to the purpose, and will no doubt, at an early date, be adorned with appropriate shade trees, evergreens and shrubbery.

Libraries.

THE STATE LIBRARY .- Organized by Act of the Legislature, April 9th, 1850. Li- brary rooms, Hastings' block, southwest corner of J and Second streets. The total num- ber of volumes, 22,386 ; the Supreme Court Reports of all the States-all of them nearly complete. The scientific and historical department has been largely increased during the last two years. The State may well feel proud of her library-the libraries of other States, which are much older than California, would not compare favorably with ours. The Board of Trustees consist of Jo Hamilton, J. W. Winans, H. W. Harkness, C. G. W. French and W. C. Belcher. This Board appointed W. C. Stratton, on the 27th March, 1866, for the term of four years ; Albert Hart is the Deputy. The books are well ar- ranged, and kept in fine order ; every accommodation is cheerfully given to those who have occasion to refer to the volumes therein.

ODD FELLOWS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION .- This Association is composed of members in good standing of the Subordinate Lodges, who are admitted upon the payment of the sum of five dollars. Members are permitted to take books out of the Library, in ac- cordance with the rules of the Association. All members of the Order are admitted to the Library rooms and have free access to the books, but, unless they are members of the Association, they are not allowed to take any books from the Library. At present the Library contains about four thousand volumes of choice, well selected matter. Among them are valuable statistical works, encyclopedias, histories, biographies, poetry, novels and romances, together with the writings and speeches of illustrious statesmen-Jefferson, Webster, Calhoun and others. It is truly a creditable enterprise, and one worthy of the united support of the whole Order. There is also a large collec- tion of minerals, specimens, fossils, petrifications, etc., the contributions of persons from different parts of the State.

SACRAMENTO LIBRARY .- This Association was organized October 21st, 1857. The Librarian gave 4,840, as the number of volumes in the Library at present.
