STEAM PLANING MILLS .- Hotchkiss & Co., corner of Front and Q streets. This mill has been running successfully for several years. Last season Hunt & Anderson erected a new planing mill and sash and blind factory on M street, near Front. This mill has the newly invented machinery for their work, and may be regarded as a complete success in the effort to save labor and gain time. Besides these steam mills there are two other sash, blind and door factories run by horse power.
James McGuire, on K street, has for years been making, and continues to make, iron doors and shutters to suit his customers.
WITHINGTON SOAP FACTORY, at the corner of 12th and J streets, has ample capacity to more than supply the city with that desirable article. Of course, we mean the plain article-not the fancy, which is designed to suit the olfactory nerves without any regard to utility.
Last, but not least, we may mention the ladies' department. There are ten millinery shops and fifteen dress making establishments, to say nothing of the numerous ladies who are engaged most of their time in making dresses at their residences.
COFFEE AND SPICE MILLS .- N. Dingley, Geo. C. Heisch, F. Kreuzberger and L. Kreuzberger have coffee and spice mills, which are employed in preparing these articles for the market. They, after supplying the home market, furnish wholesale dealers who are engaged in the interior trade, and, judging from their activity, they drive a fair business.

Before dismissing this branch of the subject, we would call attention to the fact, that Sacramento as a city, has never before, since the flush times of the gold " diggings," occupied so favorable a position. The steady increase of her population may justly be regarded as a forcible argument towards demonstrating her permanent and grow- ing prosperity. It is true, that there are not so many places of business now as formerly-along J and K streets, but there are more variety and classes of trade, taking the whole city together, than when every trader contem- plated gathering his fortune together in a few months, and taking the steamer for his home in the East. Many wagon and blacksmith shops in the upper portion of the city, are not so closely engaged now as formerly, because railroads have taken the place of the slow coach, and the tedious wagon ; in the mean time, however, other branches of industry have sprung up, and will continue to multiply, while families are settling and building themselves homes among us. Formerly, nearly half of the population of Sacramento was of a floating character. It is not so now. The finely finished residences continually being erected, and'all those constructed for renting purposes, being occu- pied, while the numerous hotels of the city are continually full, go to show that her population is of a permanent character, and on the increase. If there are any who doubt it, let them examine the School Marshal's returns, and note the increase in the number of children in the city yearly, and they will soon conclude that Sacramento is both a healthy and a productive climate.
