TO THE PUBLIC.
THE CONNECTICUT REGISTER again makes its New Year's ap- pearance, and bespeaks the public patronage. The publishers have been at great pains and expense in making this annual full and accurate, as well as an ornamental appendage to the centre table. They believe the information contained, varied as much as practicable from year to year, will be useful to every intelli- gent family, especially in informning and enlarging the ininds of children and youth Many an otherwise idle moment may be thus usefully employed.
The population of the Towns of the State is given according to the Censuses of 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850. The official returns of 1850 may make a small variation for a few towns. The gross receipts of the several post offices in the ( ) state, and the compensation allowed to post masters, we have obtained from the Department at Washington. As indicating the prosperity of the state, by comparing the census returns, which exhibit a greater increase of population during the last 10, than during the previous 40 years, and the post office returns, which exhibit an increase of receipts, of at least 50 per cent. during the last 3 years, these articles must be regarded, by every intelli- gent man as of great value for future reference, particularly in reference to the new post office law.
As by the recent change in the constitution, Justices of Peace are to be elected by the people, and the number fixed by law is the same as Jurors of each town, that number is prefixed to each list of Justices We would thank Town Clerks to send to the publishers, by their Representatives, lists of Justices chosen in April.
Some part of the Register goes to press by Nov. 15, conse- quently some returns came too late. When meetings are held after Ist Monday of Nov., two returns should be made. The towns are as much interested as we are, in having the Register complete, and when they find it not so, they can know where the fault lies. In every such instance we sent blanks to both Post master and Town Clerk.
We tender thanks to those who made prompt and accurate returns for the Register of 1851, and to such we shall generally send blanks for the Register for 1852. We wish to secure the services of some faithful and accurate man in each town to make annual returns, to whom we offer a Register as compensation. The names of such may be sent to the publishers, and they will be furnished with blanks.
Persons entitled to a Register for 1851, who do not receive it, will please send us word, as we do not send except as ordered.
