STATISTICS OF TOWNS.

Statistics of Towns.

The political character of towns is given, according to the plurality vote for Governor in 1849. The several columns show- the times of Annual Meeting. Legal Distances from Hartford and New Haven ; Grand Lists for 1848-9; Taxes on list for 1849 ; (some towns have one tax for town expenses and highways, while others have separate taxes for each, as specified ;) Births, Deaths, and Marriages, (most of which are for the year terminating Aug. 5, 1849. The law is defective in not affixing a penalty for neg- lecting to make returns for births, &c., within a specified time, and in not providing other means of obtaining them, as in the enumeration of the children.) The population of the towns was given in the Register for 1849.
