HALE MONUMENT.
INSCRIPTION. CAPT. NATHAN HALE,
WAS BORN AT
COVENTRY. June 6th, 1755.
His early youth gave promise of greatness. He graduated at Yale College, at the early age of eighteen, with the highest honors as a scholar, and no less high character as a man. In the spring of 1775, he joined the American army as a volunteer, and imme- diately received the commission of a Captain. He soon distin- guished himself, for his uncommon abilities, patriotism, and mili- tary discipline.
Gen. Washington desirous of ascertaining the order, numbers, and contemplated movements of the British army, then on Long Island, requested some one to undertake the service.
Captain HALE accepted the dangerous trust, and had completed the survey, and almost regained the American camp, when he was arrested. He was taken immediately before Sir William Howe, the British commander, who, without even the form of a trial, ordered him to be hung the next morning. He died on the 22d of Sept. 1776, regretting that he had but "one life to lose for his country."
The monument, in the public cemetery, South Coventry, was erected in 1846, at a cost of more than $4,000, It is of Quincy granite, finely wrought, after a chaste and unique design, by Hen- ry Austin, Architect, under the superintendence of Solomon Wil- lard, Architect of Bunker Hill Monument; and stands on a. com- manding eminence, overlooking lake Waugombaug on the west, and the flourishing village of South Coventry on the east. The first efforts towards the erection of this monument were made in 1833. '4. Congress was repeatedly petitioned for an appropria- tion, without effect, when the Hale Monument Association re- solved to undertake it by subscription, and accomplished it with the assistance of an appropriation of $1250 by this state.
