PREFACE.
$93391
It, is with somewhat of pride that we present to our citizens the Second Volume of the City Directory-pride in the success and pros- perity of our rapidly-growing city, which warrants the enterprise, and pride in doing what we can to develop its resources, and aid in the advancement of its prosperity. The list of names show a large increase ! in the population, while the increase of business houses indicate a large acquisition to the wealth of the city. Since the date of our last Direc- tory, marked and important changes have been wrought throughout the city, which seems to have passed out of its embryo condition into that of stately growth and positive greatness. Things hoped for, have come to be, and "manifest destiny" has given place to practical development. Among the public improvements in Des Moines; since the publication of our last CITY DIRECTORY have bech the completion - of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, the Central Fresby- - terian Church, an elegant and massive building; the Lutheran Church; a fine School House on the East Side, and another on the West Side, which is the finest school building in the State; a Steam Fire Engine, and three bridges across the Des Moines. Among the most notable private improvements are the residence of B. F. Allen, the finest west of the Hudson river; Judge. Cole's residence, tlie Register .Building, the business blocks erected by Vincent, Bush, Moore, Jones, and Hierb; Otis, Heimer & Shepherd's Steam Flouring Mill, the Capital Flouring Mill, Foster Bro's. and Carver, Young & Co.'s Planing Mills.
From a report made by the canvassers of this Directory, the popu- lation of Des Moines may be safely set down at fifteen thousand.

PREFACE. -
The labor of compiling a Directory, even in a place like this, is very great, and errors must inevitably exist, although much care lias been exercised to avoid them.
Special attention is asked to the advertisements They are published for the express purpose of having them read, and representing as they do the live and energetic men of the city, we do not hesitate to indorse what they set forth.
We desire to thank the various county and city offers for courtesies extended in compiling the work.
