AN ORDINANCE for the Rlection, Defining the Duties and fixing the Compen- sation of the City Marshal.
.. Election and qualitication.
SECTION 1. Be it ordained by the City Council of the city of Des Moines, That (there shall be elected annually on the first Monday of March, a City Marshal who shall hold his office one year, and till his successor is elected /and qual- ified; and he shall qualify within ten days after the notice of his election, by taking an oath to support the Constitution of the United States and of the State of Iowa, and to faith- fully discharge the duties jof his office, and filing his bond with the City Clerk with sureties to be approved by the City Council, in the penal sum of two thousand dollars, con- ditioned for the faithful performance of his duties.

AN ORDINANCE for the Election, defining the Duties and fixing the Compen- sation of City Solicitor.
SECTION. 1.|Be it ordained by the City Council of the Election of. City of Des Moines, That there shall be elected on the first Monday of March, biennially, a City Solicitor, who shall hold his office for two years, and until his successor is dlected and qualified, and who shall qualify within ten days after notice of his election, by taking an dath to support the Constitution of the United States and of the State of Iowa, and he shall execute a bond with sureties, to be approved by. the City Council, in the penal sum of two thousand dollars, conditioned for the faithful performance of his duties.
SEc. 2. It shall be his duty to prosecute and defend all Duties of. suits to which the city is a party, in all the courts of the city and State and United States; to prosecute all appeals when the interests of the city require appeals to be taken ; to prosecute all suits for violation of any city ordinance, and all |criminal prosecutions before the Mayor; to give his advice to the City Council, or any of its committees, on legal questions arising relative to the business of the city ; to give his opinion in writing to the City Council, whenever so desired, which shall be preserved among the city records by the Clerk, to draw all contracts to which the city is a party, to revise all ordinances prior to their final phasage by the City Council, whenever the same shall be presented to him by the Co Council for that purpose, and to perform such other services pertaining to his profession as the interests of 1 the city sball seem to require; and he may collect and receive fines and penalties, and receipt therefor woon the docket, and shall pay over the same to the City Treasurer, and tako duplicate receipts therefor, one of which shall be filed with the City Clerk, and report the same to the City Council.

FIRE DEPARTMENT.
AN ORDINANCE Establishing and Regulating a Fire Department.
SECTION 1. Be it ordained by the City Council of the City Fire departm's of Des Moines, That the Fire Department of the city of Des to consist of. Moines shall consist of a Chief Engineer and First and Second Assistant-Engineers, and two or more Fire Policemen, and such enginemen, hosemen, hook and. ladder-men, as may from time to time become members of the several engine, hose and hook and ladder companies in the city

SEc. 2. The Chief Engineer and ! Assistant-Engineers shall be elected by ballot by the members of the Fire Depart- ment at their annual meeting in January of each year, and all members of all regularly-organized engine, hose and hook ; and ladder-companies entitled to vote at such annual meeting by the constitution and by-laws of any such company of which the person offering to vote shall be a member, shall be entitled to vote for such officers : provided, no such company shall be regarded as regularly organized until the constitution and by-laws of the same have been approved and ratified by the City Council; and, provided, further, that the said Chief and Assistant-Engineers shall not enter upon their duties as such until their election has been confirmed by vote of the Council, and until they have taken an onth to be administered by the Mayor to well and truly perf rm the duties of their several offices. And said Chief and Assistant-Engineers shall hold their offices for one year, and until their successors are elected and qualified unless sooner removed for cause.
