INTRODUCTORY.

THE publication of Edwards' City Directory was commenced in 1866, and since that time the public have had ample opportunity to examine its pages and arrive at an unbiased opinion regarding its merits gener- ally. We believe they have done so, and from the high encomiums of the public press and the praise with which the work has been received by the business community, private citizens, and the leading men of all our public institutions, we have the proud satisfaction of announcing to the patrons of the Directory, that it has been a COMPLETE SUCCESS, which, gratifying as it is to the Publisher, can be no less so to every citizen who takes pride in the growth, prosperity and magnitude of the Garden City of the West.

In presenting this, the SECOND VOLUME of the City Directory, to the Chicago public, we feel a degree of pride in referring to the rapidity with which the work has been completed-taking into consideration the magnitude of the enterprise, and the capital, clerical and mechanical means employed. Our facilities for canvassing, compiling and binding Directories are superior to those possessed by any other house in the West. By these means the Publisher has been enabled to distance all opposition, and bring out the work, complete in all its parts, in the short period of forty days. To accomplish this, a corps of near a hundred em- ployees have been constantly at work from its commencement to its completion. In no city in the Union (save the city of New York), has this feat ever before been accomplished. In times past, it has taken from four to six months to publish a Chicago Directory. Our first volume was brought out in about sixty days ; and the completion of the second in forty days, should satisfy the public that we have been sensible of their wants, and given the business men of Chicago their annual Direc- tory in the shortest possible space of time, after the removals of May.

We believe, in many respects, the present volume is superior to that of last year. Containing many thousand more names, and the usual amount of information common to works of this nature, it is less cumber- some than the first volume, and more easily accessible because of its compactness. This has been brought about by the purchase of new and the use of smaller type in several of its departments, and an en- largement of its pages. Being convinced that a change of this nature was demanded by business men, we have acceded to their wants, and trust the variation will prove satisfactory to the thousands who make daily reference to the Directory.

To the public spirited and liberal minded citizens of Chicago, who have so generously extended to us their patronage, we return our sincere thanks, and beg leave to refer them to the following valuable endorse- ments, which the Directory has received, from those of our citizens whose appreciation of merit and high discernment of the useful, in everything appertaining to Chicago, is unquestioned.

Very respectfully,

RICHARD EDWARDS, Publisher.

No. 73 Dearborn St., June 10, 1867.

INTRODUCTORY.

(From Gage & Drake, Proprietors of the Tremont, House.) Mr. Richard Edwards :

CHICAGO, Dec. 26, 1866.

DEAR SIR :

* There is nothing so useful, or consulted so much in a Hotel as a Directory; and we take pleasure in pronouncing “ Ed- wards' New Directory " the standard book of the city, and should be pat- ronized by all business men.

GAGE & DRAKE, Proprietors Tremont House.

(From the Chicago Tribune, May 5, 1867.) EDWARDS' NEW CHICAGO DIRECTORY.

We invite the attention of business men of this city to the advertisement of Mr. Edwards in an- other column, announcing the forthcoming of his new City Directory for 1867, the canvass for which commenced on the 2d day of May ,

Every citizen realises the importance of a good directory. It is an institution indispensible in a city of the magnitude of Chicago, and yet notwithstanding this magnitude, BUT ONE DIREC- TORY IS NEEDED for her people, provided always the work is reliable and correct. Edwards' Di- rectory combines all the qualities needed in a work of this kind, and has the entire confidence of the business men of all classes. The highest testimonials have been bestowed npon it It has been pronounced " unsurpassed for beauty and correctness ;" "THE STANDARD BOOK OF THE CITY ;" "an indispensible requisite to every business office ;" a mammoth work and the best ever published ;" " highly appreciated by the business community and travelers generally ;" " an institution in the West, and its annual visit always welcome," &c., &c.

The value of this Directory is so well established that parties purchasing it may rely abso- lutely upon the possession of a work as near perfect as it can be made. They have only to ASCERTAIN THAT THE WORK IS EDWARDS', and there will be no deception. Recognizing the fact that a poor directory is worse than none, Mr. Edwards will issue this year, a work which may be consulted with entire confidence.

(From J. C. Dore, President Board of Trade.)

Mr. Richard Edwards :

CHICAGO, Jan. 2, 1867.

DEAR SIR: * * A good Directory is an indispensable * requisite to every business office. I have examined yours with some care, and take pleasure in commending them to all who may have occa- sion for their use. Your works are creditable to Chicago as well as to the Publisher. Truly yours,

J. C. DORE.

(From the Chicago Times, April 28, 1867.) EDWARDS' NEW DIRECTORY FOR 1867.

In another column may be found an advertisement in reference to the publication of Edwards' new city directory, and to which we invite the attention of the reader. As the canvass is about commencing, it may be well for our business men to bear in mind that the work issued by Edwards in 1866 has been pronounced, by our merchants and business men generally. the BEST OF THE KIND EVER PUBLISHED IN CHICAGO. This is a high commendation and worthily bestowed. The value of a good directory cannot be appreciated too highly and the worthlessness of a poor one is apparent to all. As Edwards has given entire satisfaction in the publication and compilation of his directory heretofore, we can implicitly rely upon the correctness of the forth- coming volume. There appears to be no REAL NECESSITY FOR MORE THAN ONE WORK of this kind in Chicago, and the patronage of the people should be bestowed upon the one giving the best satisfaction. That EDWARDS' DIRECTORY bears off the honors in this respect, is evident from the high testimonials which it has received from those who know and appreciate the value of works of this nature. His canvassers and compilers are all selected for their high qualifications, which insures reliability to the work, and speed in its execution. Taking all these things into con- sideration, we commend the new city directory (bound in blue) to the patronage of the citizens of Chicago. 1

Mr. Richard Edwards :

CHICAGO, Dec. 26, 1866.

DEAR SIR :

* * * Edwards" Directories are certainly an Institu- tion in the West, and their annual visits will always be welcome.

GAGE & RICE, Proprietors Sherman House.

INTRODUCTORY.

(From the Chicago Republican, April 29, 1867.) The New Directory for 1867.

There is an old maxim, " That it is best always to speak well of a bridge that carries one safe over." The idea, if not so eloquently expressed, is at least explicit and to the point, and there- fore becomes the matter under consideration : The advertisement in another column in reference to the second volume of "Edwards' New City Directory," the canvass for which will commence on the second day of May next. THERE IS NO DENYING THE FACT THAT " EDWARDS' DIRECTORY " IS THE "STANDARD WORK OF THE CITY," in that branch of book-making. It has been pronounced so by merchants, lawyers, physicians, clergymen, hotel-keepers, rail- road men, city officials, express agents, bankers, insurance agents, mechanics, and citizens generally. Its general correctness and reliabllity has drawn forth the highest testimonials. Our people have been so well served the past year by Mr. Edwards, that the feeling is becoming universal in favor of but one Directory. In fact, but one is needed. Edwards has made this branch of business a life-long study, and hence the superiority of his works. Patronize the " New Chicago Directory," bound in blue, and you have a book you can refer to with perfect confidence.
