(From John V. Farwell, Esq.)
Richard Edwards, Esq.
CHICAGO, Dec. 6, 1866.
DEAR SIR :
The amount of valuable information contained in your Directory, is evidence that Chicago is not lacking in enterprise, in the line you have chosen to fight it out.
JOHN V. FARWELL.
(From the Chicago Evening Journal, May 2, 1867.) Edwards' New City Directory.
Mr. Edwards is now prosecuting the compilation of his new Directory with great industry and care. It will soon go to press and soon thereafter be ready for delivery. As Edwards' Direc- tories have been pronounced the best EVER PUBLISHED IN CHICAGO, and as they have been THOROUGHLY TESTED BY ALL CLASSES OF CITIZENS, we can fully rely upon the forthcoming work as being in every particular correct and reliable. It has been carefully compared, too, with other works of the kind, and the verdict of profes- sional and business men declared in its favor. It could not be otherwise when we consider its magnitude, its beauty, its careful compilation, and general correctness. AS LARGE AS IS OUR CITY, THERE IS NO NEED OF BUT ONE ANNUAL DIRECTORY, and the pat- ronage of the public should be bestowed upon that work which gives the best satisfac- tion. Upon this question there can be no two opinions. Edwards bears off the palm in Directory publishing. The fact is not disputed ; therefore there need be no hesitancy in giving in subscriptions. Remember that Edwards' Directory is bound in blue, and is an honor to the city, and deserving of the most extensive patronage."
Richard Edwards, Esq .:
CHICAGO, Dec. 27, 1866.
DEAR SIR :
Your efforts in supplying the business men of Chicago with a Direc- tory which they may well be proud of, is universally acknowledged; and it is with pleasure we add our testimonial of your great ability in your branch of business. We wish you success in permanently establishing Edwards' Directory as an institution of the city.
PEARCE & BENJAMIN, Proprietors Adams House.
(From the Chicago Evening Post, May 2, 1867.) Edwards' New Directory.
In our advertising columns. may be found the card of Mr. Edwards, announcing that he will issue his Directory for 1867 as soon as possible after the changes in locations which the first day of May annually brings forth. As this is the STANDARD DIRECTORY of the city, and as all our business and professional men need one that is perfectly reliable and can be con- sulted with entire satisfaction, it seems a matter of necessity that their patronage should be be- stowed upon a carefully prepared work, like the one under consideration. Edwards has made the directory business his specialty, having devoted years to this branch of business ; hence his success ; and hence the testimonials which he has received from time to time from superin- tendents of different railroads in the Union, express companies, bankers, proprietors of hotels, insurance agents, merchants and business men generally. EDWARDS' DIRECTORY HAS BE- COME A STANDARD book of reference, from the fact that his canvassers and compilers are selected with especial reference to their business qualifications, and the work itself is executed in the highest style of the art. Now is the time to subscribe. It is bound in blue, and may thus be distinguished from other directories.

INTRODUCTORY.
(From Hon. W. Bross, Editor of Tribune 'and Lieut. Governor of Illinois.) Mr. Richard Edwards : CHICAGO, Dec. 11, 1866.
DEAR SIR :
Please accept my hearty thanks for your very excellent and elab- orate Directories of Chicago and St. Louis. ,Wishing you all possible success in making permanently the progress of the two great cities of the West,
I am very truly yours,
WM. BROSS.
(From the Missouri Democrat, Oct. 3, 1866.) BOGUS DIRECTORIES.
The attention of the reader is invited to the card, in another column, of Mr. Richard Edwards, the popular publisher of our City Directory, who has found it necessary to coution the public against a set of swindlers who are continually canvassing our large cities for advertisements and for subscriptions to bogus Directories. These fellows, when they cannot carry out their design by any other means, resort to the use of the name of the firm above alluded to, and represent themselves as in the employ of this publishing house, and thereby are enabled to swindle the unsuspecting. The works gotten up by Edwards, are so well known, and withal so popular, that it is an easy matter for thieves, by false statements, to impose upon the public, who cannot exercise too much caution when they are called upon for Directory advertise- ments. Such swindles are quite too common of late, and it would be well could an example be made of this piratical crew ; the public would be protected and at the same time roguery punished. Let our Merchants and business men be on their guard, and deal only with reliable agents and responsible firms, such as Mr. Edwards has by enterprise and ability proved himself to be.
(Paris Universal Exposition.)
Richard Edwards, Esq. : DEAR SIR :
CHICAGO, Sept. 27, 1866.
We wish six copies of your Directory, for the "Paris Universal Ex- position " of 1867. Will you please favor me with this number to ex- hibit our city and its proportions, as your Directory will do it.
Respectfully yours, JAMES H. BOWEN, President Third National Bank.
Mr. bichard Edwards : CHICAGO, Dec. 13, 1866.
DEAR SIR :
I sometime since received the copies of your Directories of St. Louis and Chicago which you were pleased to present to me.
These works évince a great amount of care, skill, labor and expense in their execution, and give besides other general valuable information, interesting facts, figures and arguments, demonstrative of the growth, greatness and power of the Northwest, and are highly creditable to the cities they respectively represent.
Accept my thanks, yours truly, HENRY SAYRES, Pres't of Chicago Merchants' Exchange. Mr. Richard Edwards : CHICAGO, Dec. 26, 1866. DEAR SIR :
* Which is an evidence of your great enterprise * and superior skill in your branch of business.
