HISTORY OF NORWOOD PARK.


A. FOX, merchant, was born in Greene County, N. Y., in 1852, son of Ethan S. and Sarah E. Fox. lle came to Cook County with his family in 1865. In 1877 he engaged in the milling business in Lake County, and in 1828 came to Nor- wood Park and engaged in the mercantile business. In 1882 he was appointed Postmaster of Norwood Park. Mr. Fox has the only store in that place, and carries u full stock of general merchandise. lle was married in 1882 to Miss Lottie Hoyt. The same year he was Collector of the town, and is now Trous- urer of the village.


F. M. FOX, real estate dealer. Chlengo, was born in Greene County, N. Y., in 1838, son of K. S. and Sarah E. Fox. Ile came to Cook County in 1862, and in Chicago engaged in the agricultural implement business for about two years, and then established the real estate business, which he has since fol- lowed. lle was married in 1877 to Miss Mary Raney. They are members of the Baptist Church. Mr. Fox was in the War of the Rebellion, enlisting in Company E, First New York Engineer Corps, anul wus discharged in 1862 for disability, Mrs. Fox died in 1880. Mr. Fox now has the management of the store at Norwood Park, and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the village.


C. I. FREY, Warden of the Cook County Infirmary, was born in Muryland in 1853, son of John and Mary Frey. Ile came to Cook County In 1873 and was engaged in the manu- facture of cigars. In 1880 he accepted the position of Warden of the Cook County Infirmary. Ite was married in 1883 to Miss Belle Underwood, daughter of John and Helen I'nder- wood. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, A. F. & A. M., a Royal Arch Mlason and of the St. Bernard C'om- mandery, No. 35. For two years prior to his appointment of Warden, he was in the County Agent's office.


C. P. GRANT, farmer, P. O. Norwood Park, was born in Scotland In 1×26, son of John and Eppie Grant. Ile came to America in 1837, locating in Canada, where he remained for eleven years, after which he removed to Vermont, and after one year went to Lancaster, Mass. Two years later he removed to Dublin, N. 11., where he was married in 1853 to Miss Martha S. Farnuum, daughter of Roland and Mary (Brooks) Farnaum. They have three children-Waldo, Roland and May, He came to Cook County in 1853 and purchased a furm in Leyden Township, and has since been engaged in farin- ing and gardening. Mr. Grant was brought up in the Catholic faith. Mrs. Grant Is a member of the Congregational Church. Her parents were natives of New Hampshire. İler grandfather on her father's side was a musician in the War of the Revolu- tion.


WALTER B. GRAY, farmer, P. O. Norwood Park, was born in Franklin County, N. Y., in 181G, son of John and Rebecca Giray. Hle came to Cook County in 1845, and located in Leyden Township, on a farm containing eighty neres, where he has since resided. Hle now owns 100 uvres, In 1843 he was married to Miss Ann, daughter of John and C'atharine Fisher. They have six children -John F., Wareham II., Frank M., Rebecca, Willie and Julia. Mr. Gray has been school director for fifteen yeurs, and was I'nited States mail carrier from Fort Covington to Thomasville, N. Y., for three years


JAMES GUILBERT was born on the Island of Guernsey. English Channel, in 1929, son of Jolm and Elizabeth Guilbert. He came to America in 1852, locating in New York City, where he remained for five years. He then removed to Racine, Wis .. where he lived for six years, and in 1813 located in Chicago, where he has since been engaged in business. In 1852 he par- chased n residence in the village of N rwood Park, and moved his family to that place. In early life he learned the trade of a printer, which he has since followed. In the Chicago fire of 1871 he lost his entire printing ontfit. His business is maluly insurance and commercial printing. In 1854 he was married to Miss Marguerite DuFour. They have had three children, two are now living-Lizzie A. (Wineheil) and Ida C. They are members of the American Reformed Church. He was a member of the first Board of Trustees of Norwood Park.


DR. A. W. HAGENBACH, medical superintendent of the Cook County Infirmary, was born in Moorestown, Penn., in 1853, son of Jacob and Elizabeth Hagenbach. He was edu- ented in the public schools of Nazareth and Allentown, Penn., and at the Moravian University of Nazareth. Penn., and studied medicine with a preceptor nt Scranton, Penn. Gradu- ating from Rush Medical College, Chicago, in 1876, he received the appointment of interne in the Cook County Hospital, Chl- engo, und in the spring of the same year, that of second assist- ant at the Cook County Insane Asylum: in 1878, that of first assistant, and in 1882, medical' superintendent of the Cook County Infirmary. In 1878 he was married to Miss Agnes Hertzog, daughter of Nathan and Mary Hertzog. They


have three children-May, Allen and Herbert. Ile is a mem- ber of the Masome fraternity, A. F. & A. M., Chapter and Commandery, and Master of Provideure Lodge, No. 711.


FREDERICK IFARRIS, farmer. P. O. Jefferson, was born in Lincolnshire, England, in 1834, son of Thomas and Mary Harris. He came to Cook County in 1855 and located in the town of Leyden, where he has since resided, engaged in farm- ing. llc owns fifty arres of land, and makes a specialty of raising vegetables. In 1834 he was married to Aliss Mary Ann, daughter of George and Ann Atkinson. They have nine children - Annie E., Mary J., Elizabeth R., Laura 1., Elith L., Frederick W., William II., Albert E. and Roy G. Mrs. Harris is a member of the American Reformed Church, as are also her two eldest daughters. Mr. Harris has been school director fur about fifteen years. His father came to America In 1830, and spent three years in traveling. during which time he visited the principal cities of the U'nited States, and then returned to England.


ALLEN HEMINGWAY was born in Plymouth, Conn., in July, 1808, son of John and Lucretia Hemingway. Ile came to Cook County in 1854 and located in Leyden Township, now Norwood Park. For two and a half years he was engaged in the wholesale clock business in Chicago; since that time he has devoted himself to farming. He was married in 1833 to Miss Mariett Lindsley. They had five children, two are now living - Mary A. and Racelia L. Two sons - Rodney A. and George R., died in the army during the Civil War. Mrs. Hem- ingway died in 1842. In 1843 he was married to Miss Harriet 1 .. Tyler, a native of Connecticut. They have had four chil- dren, three are now living-Anson T., Willis R. and Harriet 1 .. Mr. Hemingway was engaged in the mercantile business twenty years in Connecticut, and held the office of Postmaster of Terryville, Conn., for eight years.


WILLIS R HEMINGWAY was born in Plymouth, Conn., in 1818, son of Allen and Harriet L. Hemingway. He came to Cook County with his parents in 1854. . On attaining his majority he engaged in furming, which he has since followed, residing on the old homestead. Ite makes a specialty of rais- ing hay and potatoes. In 1879 he was married to Mrs. Mary Graves, duitghter of Thomas and Susan Poor, residents of Geneva, 111. They have two children-Harriet I., born March. 1881, and Rollin T., born September, 1982. They are mem- bers of the Congregational Church. Mr. Hemingway is a member of the school livarl.


JOHN O. HUGHES, MI D., was born in New Jersey In 1×37, son of Owen and Catharine Hughes. He was educated by private tuition, and was engaged in teaching for about five years. During that time he devoted his leisure hours to the study of medicine. In 1862 he enlisted in Company D. 1031 Illinois Volunteers, and participated in several en- gagement». About six months after enlisting he was detaile.I to the hospital department and made steward. Ile was in the service about three years, and during the last year and u half he did the prescribing for and kept the reconils of the regiment. Mustered out at the close of the service. he resumed huts medient studies graduating from Rush Medical College in the class of 1866-67. lie commenced practice in Fairview, Fulton Co., Ill., where he remained for two years, when he moved to Manito, Mason County, there spending abont four years, and succeeding in building up n farge praettee. He then located ut Norwood Park, where he has since re- mained. Dr. Hughes has been very successful, and has a practice extending into the adjoining tow.s. Ile is a member of the American Reformed Church. Be was married in 1868 to Miss Mary Hartough. They have lundt four children, three are now living - Frank O., Kate 11. and Heury E. Dr. Hughes caine to Illinois in 1857 and has been a resident of the State from that time.


REV. JAMES B. HYNDSHAW, Presbyterian clergyman. was born in Stewartsville, N. J., in 1801, son of James and Esther. Ile was educated at Princeton College, New Jersey, from which he graduated in the class of 1820, and at the Princeton Theological Seminary, in the class of 1824. He was ordained November 23, 1824. Ilis first labor in the ministry was as missionary in Sullivan County, N. Y., und his first pastorate was of seven years, ut. New Providence, N. J. He then lubured at Milford, N. J., where he was instrumental in organizing a Church which celebrated its semi-centennial anni- versary in October, 1893, with nearly 200 members. Ilis next pastorale was at Wallpaek. N. J., where he remained four years. He then accepted the position of principal of the State Academy at Stroudsburg, Penn., which position he held four years, when he accepted the pastorate of the Church at Red Mills, N. Y., remaining there five years. In 1862 he received a commission as hospital chaplain in the army, spending three years in this service. For a number of years he has not held

a pastorate, but preaches as opportunities present themselves. In 1826 he was married to Miss Abbie S. Cutler, daughter of Colonel Joseph Cutler, of Morristown, N. J. They have had eight children, three now living-Joseph C., Sophia und Silas C. Jle came to Cook County in 1878 and located at Norwood Park, where he now resides. Mrs. Hyndshaw died in 1869. F. Il. KLINE, furmer P. O. Jefferson, was born in Northumberland County, Penn., In 1837, son of Jacob and Ann Kline. lle came to Cook County in 1844 with his par- ents. They located in Leyden Township an a farin containing 160 acres. Mr. Kline has made farming his life-work, resides on the homestead, owning sixty neres, twenty of which adjoins the old place, and is extensively engaged in raising hay. fle was married in 1860 to' Miss Elmira, daughter of Adam and Mina Eyer. They have one child-Addie .I. Ile is Supervisor of the town of Norwood Park and has heid the office of Com- missioner of Highways, Collector of the town, and has been school director for some years.


JACOB KLINE, farmer. P. O. Norwood Park, was born m Berks County, Penn., in 1808, son af Jacob and Barbara Kliue. He came to Illinois with his parents In 1839, they locating in MeHenry County, where they remained for five years and then removed to Cook County and located in Leyden, now Norwood Purk Township, where they resided until their death. Ilis father died in 1840 at the age of seventy years, his mother. in 1856, at the age of eighty years. Mr. Kline still owns the farm on which he resided until 1879, when he moved to Nor- wood Park. He was married in 1830 to Miss Annu Haas. They have hud five children, four are living -Sarah F., George, Frederick HI. and Aun C. Mrs Kline dled in 1856. In 1837 he was married to Miss Ann Ross, daughter of John und Ann Ross, They are members of the American Reformed Church. He was school trustee and director for Leyden Township for a number of years.


HENRY 11. MILLER, dealer in butter and eggs, Chicago, was born in Franklin County, Penn., in 1838, son of fleury Miller. Hle was edmunted in Mercersburgh Collegiate Insti- tute, and was subsequently engaged as a teacher in that insti- tutlon. He afterwards graduated at Hidleburgh College in the class of 1865. In July, 1862, he enlisted in the nine month service, was commissioned Second Lieutenant, and partici- patod in the battle of Antietam. In the full of the same year he resigned his commission. After leaving the service he took a law course and was admitted to the Bar in 1866. He engaged in practice for two years in Marshall County, Ind., after which he located In Chicago, where he practiced until 1873, when he moved to Norwood Park and has since been engaged as a painter, which ocenpation he learned in early life. In the fall of 1883 he engaged in the butter and egg business, with Stephen Aibert, in Chicago. He was married in 1874 to Miss Lemma, daughter of William F. amt Hester Martin. They have one child-Aribella. Mrs. Miiler is a member of the Christian Church. He is Clerk of the town at Norwood, and Police Justice of the village for eight years, also notary public.


MELCHIOR MILLER, farmer, P. O. Norwood Park, was born in Altenburg, Saxony, in 1825, son of Melchior and Rosin Miller. lle came to America in 1853 nud located In the township of Leyden, Cook County. Ill. Hle rented a farm and engaged in farming until 1863, when he purelinsed the farm on which he now resides, owning forty-five acres adjoining the corporation of Norwood Park Village. Hle was indfried in 1846 to Miss Augusta Gimbol. They have had nine children, eight are now living - Bertha, Emma, Louis, Henry, Anna, Lena, Albert and Amelin They are members of the Lutheran Church. Mr. Miller has held' the office of school director for six years and Commissioner of flighways for three years.


JOHN C. MYERS, manager of the Cook County Infirmary Farm, was born In Germany in 1843, son of Christopher and Charlotte Myers. Ile enme to Cook County in 1845 with his mother. They located in Schaumburg, and subsequently removed to llanover Township. In 1862 he enlisted in Com- pany A, 7th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Mounted Infan- iry. Ile participated in the battles of Fort Donelson and Allatoona t'ass, Georgia. In the last named engagement he was wounded by a gunshot under the left eye, which passed through and out of the back part of his head. lle was in the hospital from October, 1864, until June, 1865, when he was austered out with his regiment. He was married in 1868 to Emma daughter of Amel and Alvina Pachaly: they have two children-Aivina I. and Boyden C. Mr. Myers is a member of the Masonic fraternity, A. F. & A. M., Providence Lodge, No. 711, in which he holds the office of Senior Warden. After his marriage In 1868, he removed to Barrington, where he resinled for five years. In 1923 he took charge of the Cook County Farm, and has held that position from that thne.


STEPHEN PENSOYER, farmer, P. O. Norwood Park, was born in Stamford, Conn., in 1811, son of John and Sarah Pen. noyer. Hle caine to Cook County in 1835, and made his bead- quarters at Chicago, and engaged In himbering on the Calumet River for one year, and in Michigan for two years, In IN18 he came to Monroe Precinct and engaged in farming for about four years. In 1812 he purchased a farin in Proviso Town- ship and resided there until 1865. Hle then came to Leyden Township and located on a portion of the old homestead, where he has since resided, owning 107 acres. He was married in 1844 to Miss Maria L. Dudley, dangliter of Ass and Lavina Dudley. Mrs. Pennoyer died in 1870. Mr. Pennover has held the office of Supervisor of the towns of Proviso. Leyden and Norwood Park, also Commissioner of llighways of Previso, und in 1863 he was enrolling officer for that township. Ile is a member of the Baptist Church. His parents came to Cook County in 1837 and located on a farnr in Leyden Township. where they resided until their death. Ilis mother died in Isi4 at the age of sixty-four, and his father in 1856, at the age of seventy-six years.


WILLIAM HENRY PHILLIPS, farmer, P. O. Norwoodl Park, was born In Wiltshire, England, in 1830, son of James and Sarah Phillips. In early life Mr. Phillips engaged as a flo- rist in London for four years, after which he engaged in sub- marine diving, which he followed for six years at Alderny. Westminster Bridge, British Channel, and at Bahia, South America, where he was employed by English merchants to discharge and raise the sunken steam-ships, Ile came to America In 185G, und remained in Bethlehem, Penn., for eight months, and then came to Cook County and located at Lake View, and engaged as llorist and superintendent of the Hebrew Cemetery, where he remained for sixteen years. He drove the first stage from Fullerton Avenne to Graceland Cem- etery, the summer following the iledication of that cemetery. In 1873 he came to Norwood Park Township and purchased his present home, which contains ten neres. Ile has 800 acres of leased land, and he owns 320 neres in Minnesota, and two lots in Dunning. He has followed the business of florist and farmer. In 1834 he was married to Miss Mary Ann, daughter of Daniel and Jane Cullett. They have four children-Will- iam H., James E., Francis J. and Walter D. They also have an adopted daughter, Elizabeth M. Collett. They are mem- bers of the Church of Enginnd.


REV. DEWITT G ROCKEFELLER. clergyman of the American Reformed Church, was born in Rensselaer County. N. Y., September 30, 1852, son of Frederick and Magdaline Rockefeller. He was educated at Rutgers College, New Brunswick, N. J., graduating from there in 1879, from the New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 1882, and from the National School of Elocution and Oratory, of Philadelphia. with the first honors of his elass in 1883. He was Installed and ordained in November, 1882, and accepted the pastorate of the American Reformed Church of Norwood Park. This Church was organized in 1871 with eleven members. It now numbers sixty-five. Mr. Rockefeller was married September 20, 1882, to Miss Saide Smith, daughter of William C. and Elizabeth Smith, natives of Scotland and residents of New Brunswick, N. J.


T. II. SEYMOUR, commission merchant and broker, Chi- eugo, was born in Jefferson County, N. Y., in 1835, son of Dr. Stephen and Harriet Seymour. Ile came to Chicago in 1854 auf engaged in the freight department of the C., B. & Q. H. R., and was subsequently assistant general freight agent, which position he held until 1860. He has since heen engaged in the commission and brokerage business, In 1869 he moved to Norwood Park, in which village he owns sixty-five acres, Ho is extensively engaged in fruit raising. his orchard con- taining 500 appie, 500 cherry trees, and a vineyard of 2,000 grape vines. Ile is also engaged in raising blooded stock, making a specialty of short-horns. In 1877 Mr. Seymour was married to Miss Louisa Abell, daughter of Linden and Martha Abell, of Rome, N. Y. They have seven children-Martha F., Walter S., Harriet L., Thomas H., Catharine E., Limlen and May I. They are members of the New Jerusalem Church. Mr. Seymour is a member of the Masonie fraternity, A. F. & A. M., and a thirty-second degree Mason. He has been Com- tnissioner of Norwood Park, President of the Board of Village Trustees, and for nine years member of the schoni board. For eight years he was director of the Fifth National Bank of Chi- eago, and for three years a director of the Board of Trade. In 1877 he was appointed a member of the Board of Appeals on inspection of grain. He was president of the Norwood Park Land & Building Association, that laid out the village of Norwood Park, and the first Postmaster of that place, hold- ing that office for thirteen years.

in England in 1842, son of John and Mary Shaw. He came to Cook County with his parents in 1848, they locating on a fırın in Leyden Township, where they resided until the death of the father, which occurred in 1877. at the age of seventy- seven. llis mother is living nt the age of eighty years, Mr. Shaw owns twenty acres of land lle was married In 1864 to Miss Mina, daughter of Adam and Jemima Ever. In 1871 he was appointed Postmaster of Leyden Center office. He held that appointment for twelve years, and now holds the office of Commissioner of Norwood Park.


JOSEPH SHAW, farmer, P. O. Norwood Park, was born In Yorkshire, England, In 1840, son of Joseph and Julin Shaw, who came to Cook County in 1813 and located on n farm in Jefferson Township. After three years they purchased n farm in Section 18, containing 100 acres, where they lived until the death of his father, In 1862, at the age of sixty-five ; his mother is living at the age of eighty-eight. The subject of this sketch has made farming his life-work, and now owns the old homestead. In 1863 he was married to Miss Jane Car- penter, daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Carpenter ; they have three children-Charles E., Edith J. and Alva J. He is a member of the Independent Order of Mutual Aid Society. and has been school director for nine years.


THOMAS SHAW, farmer, P. O. Norwood Park, was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1827, son of John and Mary. Hle enine to Cook County In 1848 and located in Leyden Town- ship. In 1851 he purchased the farin on which he now resides, containing 116 acres. Ile was married in 1856 to Miss Eliza Titley, daughter of John and Margaret. They have five children-Willie, Ellie, Florence, Lizzie and Netric. They are members of the American Reformed Church. Mr. Shaw has been member of the school board for twenty years. Ils parents came to Cook County in 1849. They located for a short time in Jefferson on the farm now owned by the county, and subsequently purchased the farm in Leyden Township, where they resided until his father's death, which occurred in 1878, at the age of seventy-eight. Ilis mother is living, at the age of eighty-five.


EDWIN D SMITHI, farmer. P. O. Jefferson, was born in Jefferson, t'ook County, in 1851, son of I. G. und Susan P. Sinith. Mr. Sinlth has been engaged in farming since early life. He was married in 1880 to Miss Idella L. Wangh, daughter of lienry and Martha Waugh, natives of Connecti- ent, her inother dying at the age of twenty-three years, and her father still living at the age of sixty-five years. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have one child, Howard. They are members of the Baptist Church. Ile is n t'ommissioner of Highways and school director.


ISRAEL G. SMITH, farmer, P. O. Norwood Park, was born in Washington County, N. Y., in 1816, son of Henry and Ann W. Smith. Ile came to Cook County In April, 1836, und located on the farms on which he now resides, now owning 157 acres. In 1843 he was married to Susan Pennoyer, daughter of John and Sallie Pennoyer. They have had seven children; five are now living-F. A., Emma, E. D, Sarah and Stella . They are members of the Baptist Church. Mr. Sinith was elected Justice of the Peace at the first election held in Jeffer- son Township. lle was engaged in merchandising in Chiengo for n number of years. In the spring of 1871 he gave up business in Chicago and has since been engaged in farming and stock-raising. lle has n fine residence, erected at a cost of about $1,200. MIrs. Sinith taught the first school in the town of lerden.


DR. JOHN CAMPBELL. SPRAY, Superintendent of Cook County Ho pital for the Insane was born near Bridgeport, Ind .. in 1843, son of James and Elizabeth Spray. IHis father dying in the cholera epidemic of 1834, his early life was directed wholly by his mother, who gave him u liberal educa- tion, concluded at Enrlham College. In 1867 he began the study of medicine at Indianopolis, and in 1869 attended lectures at the Bennett Medical College, graduating in 1870, while engaged in the practice of medicine. In 1871 the great fire destroyed his library. Before re-engaging in practice he spent some time in visiting New York hospitals, and then entered the medical department of the Northwestern Univer- sity, galning his diploma in 1873. Then, until 1878, he was in continuons practice, when his present position as Superin- tendent of the County Ilospital for the Insane was tendered him and accepted. Ile was married in 1873 to Miss Mary A. Gunn, daughter of John and Catherine Gunn, natives of the north of Scotland. They have four children living-Jessie. Mabel, John and James. Dr. Spray is a member of a number of medical societies, and the manner in which he has managed the hospital during his supervision, under the most trying political changes and influences, has won for him many stanch friends in and out of his profession among our best people.


His acts during his publie und private life are indientive of it high sense of honor and integrity of character-the Southern Hleal of gentlemanly requisites.


JOIN R. STOCKWELL, coal dealer, was born In Wyoming County, N. Y., in 1835, son of Enos and Hannah Stockwell. lle came to t'ook County in 1855 and located in the township of Maine, where he engaged In farming for three years, and then removed to Jefferson, where he remained for three years engaged in contract work, principally street grading. lle then moved to Canfield, and was station agent at that place for six years, and also engaged in farming, after which he moved to Jefferson Township, now Norwood Park, and built his present residence. lle engaged in the coal business in the Inli of 1871. Ile hud a contract to supply the county buildings. which he held for eleven years, and also kept a coal yard at Jefferson. In 1860 he was married to Miss Lucy Rogers, daugliter of Peter and Esther Rogers. They have three chil- dren-John, Josephine and Charles. Mr. Stockwell has been Commissioner of Norwood Park for six years, and school trustee for Jefferson and the portion of Norwood Park formerly belonging to Jefferson, also Street Commissioner af Norwood l'ark, having held that position since the organization of the town.
