HON. S. B. VOYLES, a native of Salem, Ind .. was born July 18, 1848, and was bera educated and reared to manhood. When treason threatened to overthrow the Union, be volnoteerel bis services for its preservation and Angust 10, 1801, became a private in Company G. Eighteenth Reg. iment Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Ho netively participated in the battles of Pes Ridge. Cotton Plant, Thompson's Hills, Raymond. Champion Hills, Big Black River. the siege and capture of Vicksburg. the siege of Juckaug, and after ths reduction of the lutter city was returned to Vicksburg From here they were went to New Orleans and from thence orderad to repair to Matagorda Island. Tex .. and capture Fort Esperanza. After that mission was secessfully performed, Mr. Voyles temnined on detached duty until being mustered out in August. I'll, by reason of term of service expiring. He receivel a comtoon education, and his occupation has been principally Inrming. in connection with which he has tanght school during the win- ter mouths in the vicinity of his residence. He has been ynito aucorsa- ful in those parseite, and now owns 470 acres of juostly well improveil land. It politice he is a stanch Democrat, and he manifesta a goud inter. est in the political affaire of the community in which he lives and was the choice of the people for Justice of the Peace, and was elected hy them to the office of Township Trustee in April, 19%4.
