HISTORICAL SKETCH.

THE PUBLIC DEBT.

The entire public debt of the county is a very small affair, considering the public improvements of the county. In exam- ining the statistics for the year 1872, I find that the debt of the county at that time only amounted to $30,000; and at the pres- ent time I am unable to tell what the actual amount is, but it is to be hoped that it is considerable less.

MORGAN COUNTY, ITS SETTLERS AND ITS BLESSINGS.

Only fifty-five years ago, This was a wilderness of woe, The red men wandered to and fro, A roving band. The forests then were thick with deer,

Wild beasts in number everywhere;

The howling wolf and bear were here. All o'er this land.

The forest oak grew thick and tall, No woodsman here to make her fall, Untouched by settlers' ax or maul She proud did stand. The panther basked within her shade, The wildcat on her branches played, While at her root the serpent laid In this wild land.

A chaperal of underbrush, The bramble and the water rush, Grew thick with thorns and hazel brush On every hand. The streams ran sluggishly and slow, The drift-wood caused their overflow, 1 And green ponds made a horrid show, A doleful land.

MORGAN COUNTY.

But, hark! I hear the settler's tread, He marches onward, looks ahead; He brings his powder, brings his lead, His dog and gun. He comes to settle in the west, To clear the land, remove the pest That did this county then infest ; More work than fun.

He marches forth with ax in hand, He takes possession, makes a stand, He builds his cabin, clears his land, And settles down. His brawny arm is never still, His energy and iron will, Will clear this land of every ill That here is found.

Serpents and beasts they make retreat, His dog and gun they fear to meet, The red man takes a wandering beat Still further west. Onward, still onward, is the settler's tread, Making improvements, pushing a-head; His blessings on this people shed Till they are blessed.

Blessed with homes, blessed with land, Life's blessings are at their command, Blessed with the PEOPLE'S GUIDE in hand, Blessed with wealth. Blessed with the spirit of enterprise, Blessed with energy to bring supplies; Forward, onward, upward rise To greater wealth. WM. CLINE, JR.

ADAMS TOWNSHIP.

ADAMS TOWNSHIP is located in the northwest corner of the county, and contains about 30 square miles. It is bounded on the north by Hendricks county, on the west by Putnam county, on the south by Ashland township, and on the east by Monroe and Gregg townships. The most of this township is a low and rich bottom, and is watered by Mud Creek, which runs through this township from the northeast to the southwest corner, empty- ing into Mill Creek, which is the west line of the county ad- joining Putnam county. There is also a low wet scope of country, clear across the township, generally known as the lake. There are several hundred acres of the best land in the county that is covered with water about two-thirds of the time, but when cleared and well ditched will be the most productive part of the township, equal nearly to the bottoms of White River. The citizens of this township are generally industrious and intel- ligent. The church and school privileges are as good as any in the county.

Eminence, a little village of 250 inhabitants and the only town in the township, is situated on the Stilesville and Gosport road, 10 miles south of Stilesville and on the extreme south of the township. There are 3 dry goods stores in the town, 2 drug stores, I picture gallery, I saddle and harness shop, and it is one of the best points for trade of all kinds in the surrounding country, there being all the conveniences any small town could wish. Her business men are energetic and clever, and improve- ments are good.
