CLAY TOWNSHIP.
CLAY TOWNSHIP, located in the central part of the county, contains thirty-two square miles, and is bounded on the north by Brown, east by Madison, west by Gregg, and south by Washington townships, White River being the line between Clay and Washington. The eastern part is moderately rolling and very fertile. The western part is very broken and barren; timber and stone abound in quantities in this part of the town- ship; gold has been found and mined to some extent. Brook- lyn, a pleasantly situated vlllage of three hundred inhabitants, is located on the I. & V. R. R., in the northeast part of the township. It contains two dry good stores, two grocery stores, one drug store, two churches, Odd Fellow, Masonic, Good Templar and Grange Lodges. More grain is shipped from this place than any other in the county. Clay township was one of the first settled of Morgan county, it being settled in 1819. George and Joel Matthews, Isaiah Drury and John Butterfield being among the first.
Centerton, a small town on the I. & V. R. R., about three miles south of Brooklyn, is represented by an honest and re- spectable class of citizens, and is a point for trade, accommo- dating the citizens of the surrounding country.
