WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP.
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP is the largest civil township in the county, and also contains a greater population and more wealth. Although there is perhaps more broken or waste land in this than can be found in either of the other townships, the surface of the central part generally lies well for cultivation, and the soil is very rich, especially the river bottoms. The south part of the township, and also the north, is more or less broken and rough. The broken land of this township is not very profitable for growing grain, but just the place for fruits, provided that there could be some arrangements made to transport fruit to market in sufficient time after being gathered.
Martinsville, the county seat of the county, is located in this township, and so is also Hastings Station. This township is watered by White River, Indian Creek, and their tributaries. Indian Creek empties into White River about 5 miles southwest of Martinsville. I would give here the names of some of the first settlers, but they have already been mentioned in the his- torical sketch of the county. The church and school privileges of this township are good, as will be shown by the annexed sta- tistics.
