RAY TOWNSHIP.
RAY TOWNSHIP is located in the southwest part of the county, and contains about 26 square miles. It is bounded on the north by Ashland township, on the west by Owen county, on the south by White River (it being the line between Ray and Baker townships), and on the east by Jefferson township. The surface of this township is generally broken, but along the river bot- toms are some good farms. The rest of the township is good grass lands, and is generally well timbered.
Paragon, a small station on the I. and V. Railroad, about 10 miles southwest of Martinsville, is the only village in the town- ship of any note. Church and school privileges are tolerably good. The Freemasons and Odd Fellows have each a Lodge in Paragon. There are 4 churches in the township, and also 4 school houses, valued at $2850.
The township was once very large but now is quite small, having been divided in the centre, east and west, and Ashland township made. The citizens are generally clever and sociable, and a church-going people. The vote of the township is 204 ; Republican, 121 ; Democrat, 83.
