ASHLAND TOWNSHIP.

ASHLAND TOWNSHIP is located in the southwest part of the county, and contains about 32 square miles. It is bounded on the north by Adams township, on the east by Gregg and Jeffer- son, on the south by Ray township and Owen county, and on the west by Putnam county. The surface of this township is somewhat rolling, with some breaks along the creeks. It is watered by Rhodes' Creek and its tributaries. Rhodes' Creek runs across the township angling. The soil is generally good and produces well, and is generally well timbered with poplar, oak, ash, hickory and some sycamore. It is well adapted to raising stock, &c. Her citizens are lively and jovial and obliging.

Alaska, a small village 3 miles east of the Putnam county line, and right on the line of Owen county, is well represented by kind and respectable citizens. Dr. Kieper and Dr. McCal- lister are well prepared with pills and emetics to cure all their ills. Both these gentlemen are kind and affable. A part of the village is in Owen county. The school and church privileges are moderately good. The Christian Church of Alaska has a good list of enrolled members, and all are working together in harmony, with John Brown as pastor. There is no store in Alaska, but just east, at Lewisville, Messrs. Hodson & Still- well keep a very nice little country store, surrounded by all conveniences necessary, and the citizens are very generous and enterprising.

BROWN TOWNSHIP.

BROWN TOWNSHIP is located in the north part of the county, about six miles west of the Johnson county line. It contains about 26 square miles, and is bounded on the north by Hen- dricks county, on the east by Madison township, on the south by Clay, and on the west by Monroe. The surface of the town- ship is slightly rolling, and somewhat broken along the creeks that flow through it, White Lick being the largest stream. It is a beautiful stream of clear, crystal water, running a southeast direction, and affording never-failing stock water for the citizens who live along its bottoms. The soil is generally of a sandy nature, mixed with some clay, and is very productive for wheat, oats, corn and grass. The supply of gravel for making good roads is almost inexhaustible, and the citizens are generally using it, as is seen in traveling upon her roads.

Some of the first settlers of this township were as follows: Harris Bray, Benjamin Thornburgh, Jesse Tansey, Nathan Car- ter, J. D. Carter, Joseph Newby and Samuel Moore.
