WEATHER BUREAU.
U. S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE-STATE WEATHER SERVICE. OFFICE, POST OFFICE BUILDING, BOSTON.
As a supplement to the work of the National Weather Bureau nearly all the States and Territories now have voluntary weather services, which serve as means for collecting and distributing valuable information. The six New Eng- land States are all under one management called the New England Weather Ser- vice. Its headquarters are at Boston with Mr. J. Warren Smith, Weather Bu- reau Director.
Monthly reports of temperature, precipitation, etc., are collected from about 90 voluntary observers in this State as per table below. The data are printed in the Monthly Weather Review published at Washington.
Weekly reports on the weather and its effect on the crops and the condition of the latter are collected on Mondays during the crop season from some fifty rep- resentative sections of the State, summarized, and issued in connection with re- ports from the rest of New England in printed form on Tuesdays. Twenty-five hundred copies are regularly distributed in Massachusetts through the coopera- tion of the State Board of Agriculture.
Regular forecasts of the weather and special frost, cold wave and storm warn- ings are telegraphed to a large number of places in the State at Government expense, and any place will be added to this list where action will be taken to have signal flags displayed for the benefit of the public. Special distribution of these forecasts in agricultural communities is made by telegraphing the message to some central point to a person furnished with logotypes and stamping outfit, who immediately reproduces the forecasts and sends by mail to all surrounding post offices that can be reached before night. The cards give the forecast of the probable weather for all the following day. At present Northampton is the only distributing centre in this State, the Postmaster there kindly making the distri- bution voluntarily. The system will, undoubtedly, soon be extended over the entire State.
