CULTIVATED AREA.
Massachusetts has 5,155,000 acres of land. Of this area, 1,657,000 acres are under improvement in farms, being 32% of the entire surface. Of the New Eng- land states, Maine has only 15% under cultivation: New Hampshire, 20%; Rhode Island, 39%; Connecticut, 44%, and Vermont, 45%. It would seem that over-popu- lation is not immediately impending. New York and Maryland cultivate 54% of their area. while Ohio, Illinois and Iowa lead in this respect with 71%. The state with the least improved surface is Arizona, which foots the list with only one- tenth of one per cent., and New Mexico is not much better, having only three- tenths of one per cent. The whole western Rocky mountain region, including Idaho, Nevada, Utah and Arizona reaches only .007%. The average for the United States is 18%. The total acreage is 1,900,800,000; improved, 357,616,000.
STATE AID FOR INDIGENT SOLDIERS AND THEIR FAM- ILIES.
Since 1861 to Jan. 1, 1895, Massachusetts had dispersed $22,492,314.43, a record for which the state may well be proud. The maximum state aid for widows is $4 per month. In 1894 there was paid out for state and military aid $565,746.94; for the burial of soldiers and sailors, $6060.73: special laws, $1668; Soldiers' Home, $30,000. It is probable that an equal showing cannot be made by any other state in the Union.

THE WATCHMAN has been slow to change from a "blanket sheet" to the quarto form. The result, now that it has taken this shape, is a paper which is among the most attractive of the weeklies which come to this office. Its page is well leaded ; its type is new, and there is a sharpness and crispness and an amount of good work in it, which exceeds anything that it has formerly done. Its short paragraphs, its editorials, its correspondence and its contributed articles are of a high order, and its editorial make-up is ex- cellent. It is seldom that a religious paper in changing to a new form has made more improvements or brought itself closer into touch with the people for whom it is designed.

Our bright Baptist contemporary, THE WATCHMAN, of Boston, comes in new shape, its pages being reduced
