In Boston the appointment is made by the Chief Justice of the Municipal Court and he may also appoint not to exceed three (amended in 1892, to read five, one of whom shall be a woman) assistants. The duties of these officers are to inquire into the nature of every criminal case before his court and, at his discretion, to recommend that any person, convicted by said court, shall be placed on probation. The compensation of Probation Officers is determined by the appointing Judge, subject to the approval of the County Commissioners, and paid from the treasury of the county. In Suffolk county, Commissioners of Public Institutions act.
