GYPSY MOTH.
No insect in Massachusetts ever created half the disturbance that this object has excited in the last five years. The first official mention of the Ocneria dispar is in June, 1891. In this report, it is stated that the Hon. Wm. R. Sessions, Sec- retary of the State Board of Agriculture, sent to the Health Experiment Station, June 27, 1889, several caterpillars with a request to know what they were and how they might be destroyed. Mr. John Stetson had taken these to the Secre- tary's office from Medford. Mr. C. H. Fernald, in charge of the Station, states that records are found in 1870, of the introduction into New England of a certain owlet moth, by a Massachusetts entomologist. It is claimed that this entomol- ogist was Mr. L. Trouvelot, then living near Glenwood, Medford, but now (1891) in Paris. He sought to raise silk worms and imported European species for this purpose. In his efforts to cross his varieties, these moths were brought to this country and escaped. They became acclimated and, in time, a terrible scourge. Thus far they have ravaged largely the eastern part of Middlesex county, particularly the towns and cities of Medford, Malden, Everett, Arling- ton, Melrose, Somerville, Cambridge, Chelsea, Stoneham, Winchester, Belmont,

MASSACHUSETTS YEAR BOOK.
Saugus, Revere, Lynn, Lexington, Swampscott, Wakefield, Burlington and Charlestown.
In 1890, March 14, the Legislature provided for a Commission of three discreet persons to look into its habits and to provide for the destruction of the moth, and appropriated $25,000 for this purpose.
In this year, 1891, the Legislature passed an act, providing for the destruction of the pest, and to this end $50,000 was appropriated. In 1892, a further appro- priation of $75,000 was made. In 1893, the appropriation was $100,000. In 1894, an- other appropriation of $100,000 was made; very likely that for 1895 will be no less.
In 1891, March 12. Mr. E. H. Forbush of Worcester, was placed in charge of the field work, with Prof. C. H. Fernald as entomological adviser, and from that time to the present, the work of destroying has progressed with varying degrees of success. During the year, 1891, the smallest number of men employed was sixteen; the largest, 238. In 1892, the minimum number was thirty-one; the maximum, 234. In 1893, the range was from none, March 13 to 18, to 151, July 24 to 29. In 1894, the minimum number was fifteen; the maximum, 275; May 2 to 9, 15; July 9 to 14 and 23 to 28, 270; August 27 to September 1, 15.
As to the success of the scheme of destruction, opinions vary: some saying that as long as appropriations can be obtained, there will be moths to be de- stroyed; others claim that the plan is accomplishing all that its advocates claimed.

BUSINESS.
BUSINESS MEN Do not usually advertise unless they have something to talk about. F. S. BLANCHARD & Co. are persistent advertisers.
BUSINESS MAN should have printing in harmony with his business. He is "sized up" by the printing he uses. Don't use poor printing at any price. Good work costs no more when done by F. S. BLANCHARD & Co.
PRINTING IS A FINE ART. 'Tis no longer possible to suit the exacting demands of various businesses and callings, except by a well equipped and complete office. F. S. BLANCHARD & Co.'s facilities are unsurpassed for varieties of type, excellent and labor (money) saving machinery, and masterly treatment of every job entrusted to them.
There Are Lots of Printers, but not all know how to print. Poor type, poor styles, poor taste, cheap ink, and improper selection of paper, stamp the brand of inferiority on a great deal of printing. F. S. BLANCHARD & Co. do good printing, quick printing, and. pay personal attention to details.
CATCH THE IDEA ? F. S. BLANCHARD & Co. are cheap printers, but do not do cheap printing. They want your printing, and will give good work, prompt service, and prices that mean true economy.
